Biteymax's Next Day Non-Emotional Thoughts

Biteymax22 : 9/13/2021 9:40 am
Good morning and welcome to the 2021 Giant’s Football season! As many of you remember I started these threads last year to decompress after a loss and level myself after a win, for now I’ll be doing the same thing this year.
As always, I invite you guys to comment on my thoughts or add your own for discussion.

Starting by giving credit where its due. The Broncos and their coaching staff which includes our last HC Pat Shurmur did a fantastic job of putting together a game plan and executing it. Give our opponent some credit for coming across the country and playing well

Shurmur’s game plan may have seemed, well… boring, but if you think about it the plan worked for 2 reasons
o It emphasizes his QBs strengths (short, quick passes and managing the game)
o Attacked our defense at its core strength from last year which is “bend don’t break”

Elaborating on the comment about our defense: Last year our defense was very good but not perfect. Where we were very good, if not elite, was holding opponents from making big plays and keeping opponents from scoring once we got to the red zone. Shurmur looked at this and realize we are built to give them 5 yards but not 15 and just kept taking the 5 yards, this fits with Bridgewater’s skill set. Pairing with this is the fact that our offense just isn’t good enough to come out and respond with a quick score or even build a lead. It was a very boring strategy for this Bronco’s team, but it was probably the right one

Coaching aside, the Bronco’s players executed. The execution of a plan is exponentially more important than the plan itself….

Onto the Giants. I’d like to spend some time talking about main concerns (taking these from actively reading BBI) we had during the off season:

o Offensive line, all positions except Gates
o Jones turning the ball over
o Pass rush
o Offensive play calling

Offensive line - Was the best of the 4. Despite Solder getting absolutely embarrassed by Von Miller on the first drive (which helped to set a bad tone) this group banded together and managed to play what I’d call an OKAY game. No more than that. I believe the stats were 2 sacks, 2 QB hits, both by Miller. Not bad at all from a pass blocking perspective. Jones had time to throw. What was interesting was the run blocking was poor and we never really established a run game. Odd because they were able to run block last year even when giving up sacks.

Jones and the turnover - If you just looked at it at a 100ft view 2tds and 1 turnover isn’t horrible, but it was the when and how. Marching down the field down 17-7 in a situation where you could make this a 1 score game with ample amount of time to finish a comeback if you score, you cannot fumble because you tried to put your shoulder down and run through guys. If this was 4th and 1 and you either get that yard or turn it over anyway, then fine, try that. It wasn’t, he should have slid and went to a manageable next down

o Throwing the ball, he was okay, no more and no less. Some are going to point to some balls he threw into heavy coverages but by and large they were late in the game when we were 2 scores behind, I have no issue with a QB trying to force something in that situation
o Also, worth noting he threw 1 deep ball and it was a nice one but we never went back to that

Pass rush - We had some opportunities getting to Bridgewater but didn’t finish and could have had more than 2 sacks, but we didn’t do a good job getting there when needed or making him feel uncomfortable on 3rd down. We blitzed the middle often, but the Denver OLine did just enough to slow us down knowing Bridgewater was going to get rid of the ball quickly. We must find ways to make opposing QBs more uncomfortable…

o Worth noting, on the 4th down play on the Broncos first scoring drive I think Dexter Lawrence was very clearly held and it should have been called. This obviously would have been a big momentum change in the game

Offensive play calling - In short, it was what we thought it was. Bland, conservative, not scheming players to get open but instead relying on them winning one on one battles. Where all of us were hoping to see a different offense then last year I’m not saying it won’t happen, but I am saying we didn’t see it yesterday

o Garrett called his signature “reverse the first time we get inside their 40” and the Broncos clearly new this was coming. It is now predicable
o I don’t have access to an all 22 nor do I go through and do play by play analysis but 2 back-to-back plays late in the game really stuck out to me. This coming from the drive in late Q4 where we got stopped in the red zone
 3rd down. Fade to Rudolph who was well covered. Jones just threw this out of the end zone
 4th down. Throw to Golladay front pylon which got broken up. They showed an angle of this play going down the end zone line. ALL of our receivers ran the same route which was run in the end zone and turn around (sticks)…..
 2 plays where scoring is a must, no scheming anyone open, putting all the responsibility on WR’s to get open on their own while using predictable routes. Doesn’t cut it

These are some other quick takes I had watching. I’ll keep these short because the rest of this is rather long:

• My best description to yesterday’s overall performance is “Flat”. Talking about the Broncos I made the comment that the execution of a plan is more important than the plan itself, we need to show some urgency and we need to execute

• I know Toney played very little in the preseason but in the short time he was on the field it seemed so obvious the Giants were going to force the ball to him via some trick play. They either should have not played him or made him run some standard routes

• Andrew Thomas looked like a completely different player than he did against NE. He wasn’t going against Chubb but Green started for them all last year. Remember Uche from NE wasn’t exactly a pro bowler either

• Ojulari did record one sack but other than that had a rough outing. Late in the game he had back-to-back plays where he had a roughing the pass rusher then was washed out of his assignment allowing Gordon to score a long TD. He’s a rookie, he can get better

• Sterling Shepard looked like our team’s best player yesterday

• Judge and co. did not have a good game. Team was flat, Broncos seemed one step ahead of us and the challenge of a scoring play was odd to say the least

Conclusion: Its game 1, weird things happen in the NFL on week 1, maybe this game won’t be indicative of what the rest of the season is going to look like, maybe it will be. The good and bad news is we have a game Thursday night against a division opponent, if we can get it together and win all of this will be forgotten, if we lose prepare for the BBI avalanche. I’m not going to get into exactly what we need to do to beat the WFT but it involves better execution and playing more aggressively; we did not dictate the game to the Broncos, the brought it to us, we need to bring the game to WFT.
Just a quibble with your first point

Denver had a guy wide, wide open for what I think was about a 60 or 70 yard pass play and the receiver dropped it. If they had hit that, the pass stats would look a lot worse.

Point is, lots of teams are "take your shots when you can get it" and Denver was no exception. The Giants got extremely lucky on that one.

Think the game boils down to two things.. the inability of the defense to get off the field on 3rd and 4th downs and the inability to score in the red zone
Well said

I think what frustrates us most is that it was the same issues we've seen in previous years. Kudos to TB for being consistent all day - the benefit to "bend but don't break" is that it puts pressure on the offense to be flawless and they were for the most part.

I don't think anyone was expecting more from Barkley in his first game back but the lack of push up front was alarming. Last year when Saquon went down it seemed like the OL figured out how to create some push for Gallman, Freeman, etc. They need to be able to establish the run before we can expect this offense to have any success.

Yep this is it. The Defense, like last year, seems to want to give and give and just wait for the offense to make a mistake. Our offense moved the ball in the middle of the field pretty well, but we can't finish. Since getting points, and not yards, is the name of the game this needs to be fixed
Agree with your assesments

Bitey.

I too noticed a few times on key situations that Dex Lawrence destroyed his man only to have the OL yanking on his Jersey or pulling him back from behind. I saw it twice on two key plays in the game and neither was called a hold, and no one seemed to point out the obvious thing I saw before my eyes. Have to hope for better refs next game, who will call that, as he is a huge key to getting that pressure and breaking the pocket.

Garrett picked up right where he left off. Not a good sign although I will give him a few games as this team looked rusty with so few reps among all these players starting (Golladay, Toney, Barkley). I was very critical of Garrett’s play calling last year, I dont subscribe to the philosophy of designing plays to not lose, doing so and you are ensuring you lose. The playcalling lacks creativity and most of all guts. It’s very predictable, I can’t take any more plays that are all designed to be short of the first down and don’t attack a defense.

I liked what I saw from Golladay, we haven’t had that in a WR here in a long time. Someone who can just put physical guys and win the contested catch. It was a shame they o my targeted him once all game until the 4th quarter. Again, bad play calling.

Have to give props to Andrew Thomas. He had a good game, especially after all of BBI over the past couple weeks have shit all over him. Peart…now that is worthy of ridicule, have to hope he improves, Solder did OK. Hernandez was bad, this guy just doesn’t show up in game day consistently I don’t get it. He was put on skates a few times and did next to nothing in the run game. Gates was good, love how he stood up for Jones, he is a leader.

Pass rush is worrisome, they struggle to get pressure and seemed to know exactly where the giants were coming on every blitz we did. Graham has to get this under control or it’s going to be a long season. This defense needs to find a way to get a stop, yesterday’s performance was not good. They were on the field way too long and 1st game of the season that is not a good thing as they all tired out obviously. This Iffense needs to find a way to sustain drives, if Garrett can’t do that I think Kitchens should take over the reigns sooner than later.

I can't disagree with anything Bitey says.

I will point out the elephant in the room - Garrett's offense. Many of us have been complaining about it for a year now, that he does very little to scheme his WR's open. It is almost unfair to evaluate DJ running this vanilla offense. He played MUCH better in Shurmur's.

This was probably Judge's worst game as well. Team was flat in a home opener, and his attempted challenge was egregious. Down 2 scores in the 2nd half, and you're going to burn a TO because you want to talk to the refs? Every score is reviewed, what are you challenging?
I generally agree, although i think you are giving Jones and Judge
Mike from Ohio : 9/13/2021 10:43 am : link
a bit of a pass.

The bar seems to have been lowered for Jones to the point that anytime he throws a nice pass we give him kudos. The problem with him is not that he doesn't have an NFL arm or he is not accurate. When given time he throws a very nice pass more times than not. The criticism is that he is going to stare down his target and throw it whether it is there or not. When plays break down, his only option is to run.

Judge did not have his team ready to play. The seemed unprepared for what the Broncos threw at him offensively, and on offense the plan seemed to be - get Barkley and Toney a few touches and let's get out of here. It felt like a pre-season game.

And Judge's challenge of a play every football fan knows he can't challenge showed a lack of awareness, or a temper tantrum. The game was still in reach at that point and it cost a second half timeout for him "to get the referees attention." He also seemed a little unprepared.

++1 that has been my take in the threads today

Bridgwater was elusive in the pocket and got rid of it at the last second multiple times. He probably won't look that good for the rest of the year :(

I didn't harp on Judge but last bullet was "Judge and co. did not have a good game", so I did touch on it and do agree it was the worst coached of the 17 games he's been a Giant.

For Jones its not that I gave him a pass, its more that I don't think he's the reason we lost. We lost because the Broncos executed better, attacked our weaknesses and dictated the game to us.

I have my overall opinion on Jones but they'd probably be best related to another thread rather then a next day reaction. They're much more "bigger picture" than anything we see attributed to a specific game.

All of it seems on point. And for a long post, and this being BBI, that is somewhat rare.

Hopefully the team will give some better material to work with on your Friday post...
Nothing to disagree with
Payasdaddy : 9/13/2021 12:11 pm : link
I put a lot of the blame on defense, just couldn’t get off the field on 3rd and 4th down
I am gonna write that off to the first game ( mostly)
We execute a bit better, we have the ball 2-3x more times
Jones could be a more athletic Dave brown. Something is off with him, just the intangible he doesn’t have
People who have “ it” usually make a play or two that saves your ass
Jones just seems to have 1 major league screw up every game
Saquon was still getting his feet wet, that wicked turn of direction isn’t there
It may not be be all a few more games, all season or ever again.
If he isn’t 98%, no second contract for me
For both him and jones
Judge. Team was not 100% ready, on him. Expect better
Graham, poor game too. Lotsa to clean up. Talent is top half of the league. I think d plays a hecka lot better against wft
We are 0-1. So is Dallas and wft. Big game Thursday, looking forward
As usual, level

headed analysis. I agree. Offense was bland and defense had hands on Teddy 6 times and did not get him down. I blame the defense a lot more than the offense.

Did not like Garrett's play calling.

Bradberry had a bad game, IMV.

Could have been worse... could have been the Packers.

Excellent analysis. You said it all….pretty much how I saw it.
Very good thread Bitey, thanks

I sure hope yesterday was an aberration of our team defense, because if these guys stink, especially our top 5 secondary, we are in deep doo doo.

Our offense, led by Saquon ‘ s running and Garrett’s play calling may not bring us much joy. I don’t know how long it will take for Saquon to get back in playing mode but I do not believe Garrett can improve. Thus, we can’t have our defense to be a liability like they were yesterday.

I can’t wait till Thursday now because I do believe our defense will show up big time. I think their manhood is being challenged and they will respond…I hope.
