Howard Cross on the O-line

PepperJ52 : 9/13/2021 9:48 am
Anyone listen to Giants Huddle? He said he thought the unit played pretty well over all. I need to go back and re-watch the game because I started to get kind of tanked in the 4th quarter as thing spiraled but I was a little surprised to hear him say that.
Giants Huddle - ( New Window )
I posted this in the Bredeson play thread

Not sure how PFF or others grade them, but the line as a whole played better than expected in pass pro. They weren't getting Jones hit a lot (PFR says they had 2 QB hits) and allowed two sacks (one was untouched because of some snap count issue).

They have an issue at RT but everywhere else is mostly set.
Yeah, I thought the pass protection was good

Jones had time. Run blocking was a different story, however maybe that had more to do with Denver. Time will tell. All is not lost yet.
Too bad pass blocking is only one-half

of this unit's responsibility.

Their run blocking was horrific.

Which was the exact opposite of last year. That should tell you its possible for them to improve.
The OL wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good either.

RB's averaged 2.5 YPC.
I don't think the run blocking was horrific.

The gameplan was. When did we even try to establish the run?

1st play of the game was a nice 5 yard carry for Barkley. Then what? They couldn't wait to get Jones in the shotgun.

This was the 1st game of the year for both teams - it was going to be hard for the starters to play 60 minutes. Part of the gameplan should've been to wear the other team down. (As it was for DEN.)

The Giants, from a strategy standpoint, didn't give the run game a chance, which has been the case far too often.

I kinda agree.

The run game looked like it was run behind a large pile of men with no strategy lol.......did we have a run over 4 yards other than DJ?
The Oline was not the issue yesterday

Besides a couple of plays where Miller smoked each Right Tackle. That’s also Von Miller, a first ballot HOFer.

The lack of aggression. When you have a defense that cannot get off the field on 3rd down, you need to capitalize on every possession. The Giants had no interest in threatening the sticks on the possesion after the Logan Ryan FF.

Going 3 and out and immediately giving Denver the ball back there was the turning point to me.
Jones seemed to be forcing the ball

Bridgewater looked like the much better QB yesterday.

Bridgewater had much more time to throw.

I don't see how some of you think Jones had 'enough time to throw'. He was pretty much dumping it off two seconds after drop back on half the snaps.

The OL had a couple of good pass blocking drives, otherwise we'd have never scored at all.

Our offensive scheme is uncreative and pathetic because while Jones is busy being shellshocked from previous seasons' pressure, Bridgewater is having 4-5 seconds back there before he has to ever leave the pocket.
The RB 2.5 avg...had more to.do with the.play calling

Bridgewater was like the Cinderella Man with our defense,
MartyNJ1969 : 9/13/2021 10:22 am : link
He took the best punches from our D and kept smiling and executing, He smiled a few times after making plays..especially when he slid for first down an shelton tried to take his head off..He smiled right after that saying "is that the best you can do?" Bridgewater is one tough SOB and i respect him alot after yesterday's performance.

Was smiling a few times his helmet kept falling off. Seemed deliberate after the first two times.
The run blocking was dreadful

People seem to be crapping all over Bridgewater

as some sort of bottom-feeder NFL QB. I don't know how you can watch that game and not come away with some respect for how smart he is and how well he plays the position. He is not elite and lacks many top end physical traits, but he is a guy you can win with.

Our guy is still not at that level.
I don't think the pass blocking was good
arniefez : 9/13/2021 10:50 am : link
it was ok at best most of the time and bad several times. On a grade scale I'd give the pass blocking a C- and the run blocking a F. IMO no NFL team can win consistently with the OL playing like the Giants did yesterday.

I totally agree that after they stopped Denver by recovering a fumble on their own 4 yard line late in the half, they had to get at least one first down. They did not even come close.

Agreed. Although if he's actually got a hole to run through, he can still be elusive. I actually thought, if nothing else, Barkley was committed to north/south yesterday. See him never give up on that one third down and short in the second half?

That never happens with him two seasons ago.
