Looking forward: Can we beat WFT?

BH28 : 9/13/2021 3:14 pm
They actually had a lead later in the second half against the Chargers. Heinicke did ok filling in for Fitzpatrick. WFT had a hard time getting off the field on third downs as well but held a pretty explosive offense to 20 points.

Yes we own this team as of late, but the two meetings last year were pretty close coming down to stops/turnovers at the end. This defense will be better than the Broncos but the offense looks to be worse.

As much as we like to write them off, they have a really good D and some decent depth on O outisde QB. I think this is going to be a tight game and the loser will be 0-2 which obviously is not a good sign to start the season.

What say you?
Can? Sure
Greg from LI : 9/13/2021 3:16 pm : link
Will? That's hard to say.
I bet we will beat WFT
Bold Ruler : Mod : 9/13/2021 3:16 pm : link
Even after the disaster of yesterday. We just seem to get it done against them most years.
I think we will learn
Keaton028 : 9/13/2021 3:17 pm : link
a lot about Joe Judge and this team based on how they respond. Maybe they'll wake up and beat an injured WFT. If they lay another egg, it's going to be a long season.

ryanmkeane : 9/13/2021 3:18 pm : link
we can beat them, i worry we've won the last 5 against them and something is bound to change soon.

Jones has played very well against them as well. Let's hope that continues.
Not if sunday's defense shows up.

its going to be another embarrassing national tv game for the giants
Yes they can. Recent matchups have all gone the NYG way.
The_Boss : 9/13/2021 3:21 pm : link
But will they? Washington had issues with the SD offense which is miles better than the NYG O. I think defensively the NYG should be able to contain the Washington offense, especially if Fitz and McLaurin don’t play. It’ll be close. Can Jones avoid the backbreaking turnover to cost the NYG the game? That’s what it’ll come down to. Win this game and turn the ship around heading into a very winnable week 3 matchup at home vs Atlanta. Lose and you can see a 2-6 record or worse at mid season.
Not if they score 16 points
averagejoe : 9/13/2021 3:22 pm : link
Yesterday I saw 49ers had 31 pts in first half. I told my friend Giants won't have 31 points after three games. If WFT can score two TD's that pretty much wraps it up.
...
ryanmkeane : 9/13/2021 3:23 pm : link
Gibson doesn't really scare me much. McLaurin and McKissic are the two guys we need to keep an eye on. Aside from that, their offense might be worse than ours
I actually
Sammo85 : 9/13/2021 3:25 pm : link
respect the Washington run game. They have some options and depth back there.

I think it will be close game. Am interested to see how the Washington D targets Jones and Barkley.
WFT…..WTF
thrunthrublue : 9/13/2021 3:26 pm : link
If chase young, etc. rattles danny panicky…..no.
If they come with the same
nygiants16 : 9/13/2021 3:30 pm : link
conservative gameplan, no chance, if they play agressive and actually let their high priced corners play man and their versatile safeties play all over the field and the offense is opened up, then yeah they can..

But i will believe it when i see it
This offense doesn’t score..
Sean : 9/13/2021 3:31 pm : link
So I’m not confident.
honestly
Platos : 9/13/2021 3:31 pm : link
i think we're going to beat the bricks off of washington.

i'm not worried about our defense. Graham doesn't get embarrassed week to week usually.

the problem is can Garrett stop being a buffoon and can Jones not kill himself with turnovers? thats a tall task it seems.
Yes
jeff57 : 9/13/2021 3:36 pm : link
But I wouldn’t bet on it.
WFT struggled to score against a decent
Section331 : 9/13/2021 3:37 pm : link
but not great LAC defense. We should be able to hold them under 20, the question is, can we score more than that?

I see a 16-13 kind of game, with the good guys coming out on top.
I won't
mittenedman : 9/13/2021 3:37 pm : link
like the Giants in any game until they prove me wrong. They don't deserve the benefit of the doubt anymore.

I think even the most optimistic fans knew this was a make or break year. Everyone can agree on that. These games are conclusive evidence now.
Yep, losing Ryan Kerrigan was actually a massive blow to that defense
Zeke's Alibi : 9/13/2021 3:38 pm : link
If Graham calls games as he is wont to do though, Taylor will be able to distribute to their underrated skill players and we will see Teddy part 2. I don't expect many changes offensively though on short rest, so the defense better bring it.

Chargers defense is solid, losing Derwin last year was like losing a lynchpin.

I'm more curious of WFT defense being overrated without Kerrigan coming off the bench keeping Sweat and Young fresh. They looked like trash last week. Bulled over in the run game and stymied in the pass. Of course the Chargers look to have a better line than ours, but its early. Overreactions to week 1 are always abound.
Probably not because no good reason to see a better performance
joe48 : 9/13/2021 3:43 pm : link
I am no longer going to be optimistic with his coaching staff.
I don't think so,
barens : 9/13/2021 3:44 pm : link
until they form some sort of a running game, I don't see it happening.
Interesting parallels between WFT and NYG
BH28 : 9/13/2021 3:44 pm : link
in both faced AFC West opponents in week 1. Kind of a 'throwaway' game for both clubs with the week 2 short turn division match-up.

I wonder how much of that factored into the game planning for week 1? I know a lof of people penciled in a W vs this team, but I think they will be more of a challenge than Denver. It will come down to who's offense is less inept IMO.
If the Giants get more creative on offense and have some rhythm
GiantBlue : 9/13/2021 4:02 pm : link
Maybe......

But there were times yesterday when I was calling for Glennon to come in and replace Jones. At least Glennon played a lot more of the pre-season.

If this team and coaching staff has any pride at all, they will be a differnt team come Thursday night.
Watching the game yesterday, I had the genuine feeling that the Giants
Reese's Pieces : 9/13/2021 4:06 pm : link
could have a superb downfield passing game this season. To win games, they need a defense that can at least slow the other team when it has the ball and on offense can manage four yard/carry between the tackles on first or second down and the same when given the ball on play action.

That doesn't seem to be a lot to expect of a team that has put so many assets into the offensive line and the #1 running back.
I’m finding it very difficult
cjac : 9/13/2021 4:12 pm : link
To be optimistic considering what we’ve seen from this team the past couple of years and considering Jones can’t seem to stop making back breaking gaffes whether it’s a fumble or an INT.

I would love to win this game but I’m envisioning the same shit we’ve been watching in what seems like forever

Well based on what we saw I hope thats what our coaching staff was focused on.
It's an even more intriguing game now...
bw in dc : 9/13/2021 4:22 pm : link
with both teams losing.

The WFT DL went up against a very good LAC OL yesterday. Linsey and Slater look like massive upgrades right now. I thought the WFT did a good job holding LAC to 20 points at home. Herbert was just out of his mind on third downs - 14 for 19 I believe were the final numbers there. Just numb.

Now they get a chance to reset and play against our OL. So there could be big problems there.

I thought the WFT OL held up pretty well against that Charger D. Gave up only one sack and ran for 130. Gibson lead the charge. He's a solid RB.

But I think we match-up well with their receivers and should be able to manage Heinicke if we can force him to stay in the pocket to make decisions. I don't see that as a strength...
If they don't, I may need to check out for a while
sb from NYT Forum : 9/13/2021 4:37 pm : link
...and pay attention once they win two in a row, if that ever happens.

This garbage football is not only draining, but a grand waste of time.
I honestly don't think so

I think it's funny how that logic never translates to us beating the Eagles "something's going to change soon".

I think our first win comes against the Falcons
I think we probably win
AdamBrag : 9/13/2021 5:59 pm : link
WFT has fewer weapons on offense than the Broncos and Bradberry can take McLaurin out of the game which means it comes down to stopping Gibson.

On offense, we put up 20 and 23 against them last year, so putting up 21 should win the game.

Sadly yes.
The bigger the game
djm : 9/13/2021 7:03 pm : link
The worst the giants play. I ain’t falling for their shit anymore. From now on I have to assume the giants will lose. Maybe in December at 3-9 when the team has had 3 months to warm up they get their sea legs, but the giants never win games like this anymore. The offense is ass. The D might play well but it won’t be enough. Prove me wrong please.

What are the odds we make Taylor Heineken look like Joe Montana?

LOS, I'm in a group text with a bunch of cousins & we all call him Heineken too, lots of 'When is Heineken going to get a deal from Heineken?'/'Heineken is playing with no abandon after his 9th Heineken'.
I've seen this movie before... Here's what's going to happen:
Leg of Theismann : 9/13/2021 7:41 pm : link
We are going to beat WFT. Then there will be several threads on this board asking if Gettleman deserves a public apology from all Giants fans. Then we will beat Atlanta. BBI will have at least a dozen posts asking if we should tear down MetLife stadium and rebuild it as a massive bust of Dave Gettleman (i.e. the first part-stadium part-statue structure in history). Then the Giants will proceed to lose 9 of the next 10 games.

Can they?

Yes. But they'll find a way to fuck it up.
I dont see the Giants winning this game
HumbleGiant : 9/13/2021 9:22 pm : link
I'm not drinking any of this Kool-Aid! I think we will see a bunch of the same shit, no running game, no separation from the wide receivers, extremely tight throws, Jones in constant pressure. OL is going to get absolutely demolished! This offensive scheme is just too vanilla, predictable and for some reason just stubborn. The running game isn't effective at all, but lets keep running anyways mentality is just dumb! Here's the question is the scheme just complete shit or does it have to be dumbed down because of Jones inability to not turn the ball over at least once a game? I don't see us scoring more than 15 points. Giants 13 Washington 20
Their defense is going to dominate
Dave in PA : 9/13/2021 9:31 pm : link
I don’t care how crappy the WSH offense is, their defense is the best unit amongst both teams and they should be favored accordingly
Yes
WillVAB : 9/13/2021 9:36 pm : link
Team they own with a backup QB. These are the only types of games the Giants have won of late.
It's a back up QB
Kanavis : 9/14/2021 7:03 am : link
So I expect Graham to give him enough 5 to 10 yard plays to get comfortable. Once that happens, the WFT should be comfortable enough to open it up and rack up the points.

I should pull back and let the month of September process first, but Sunday was way too familiar and it just looked "normal." It looked like it will happen again.

I put too much credence on Sunday, I will admit that, but what else can I do at this point. These games matter. We're talking Denver 2021 here not the 89 Niners.

We could win Thursday. Why the hell not? It's stupid Washington with a backup QB. Of course the Giants could win. Atlanta could win this game. So could Jax or any number of bad teams. We might win only to lose the next 3.
I went into this year
djm : 9/14/2021 10:36 am : link
with an open mind and a hopeful one. I didn't even need to see a win on Sunday but I needed to see something from the offense to validate my beliefs and I didn't see anything.

Kind of how I felt going into 2017, some differences but all in all similar. Once that first game was in the books and the NYG offense looked WORSE than the prior season, and the D was leaky at best, I knew we were fucked.

This offense looks like McAdoo's offense. I HATE getting on the play calling, but play design? I have no problems shitting on that, and the play design here looks so bad under Garrett. I don't know more than he does, but I still can't get past how they used Barkley in this first game. To me it was so dumb.
