It was the defense that lost the game yesterday, the defense

Walker Gillette : 9/13/2021 5:06 pm
You can sit back and blame Jones, Garrett, the OL, Saquon whoever the hell you want but if you want to be honest with yourself the defense played horribly and lost the game yesterday. Broncos had the ball for 35 minutes constantly converted and 3rd and 4th down and scored 27 points and it could have been in the 30s if not for a great play by Logan Ryan to strip that ball down by the goal line.

You can't let Teddy Bridgewater roll around back there at will and then hit one of 3 open guys when you have to make a play and get off the field. Was the offense great yesterday, certainly not but hey moved the ball a bit and drove down into Broncos territory what 5 times. There was a lot of reasonable talk on this site about how the O would likely start slow due to the skill guys not having practiced much. If this game was to be won it had to be done the Giants vaunted Defense and its ace coordinator Patrick Graham. To be honest Shurmur ate Graham's lunch yesterday and most of the players simply played poorly. If this doesn't change quick the season will be sunk and the culprits won't be the typical whipping boys it will be the unit we all hoped would be top 5 and bring a little bit of the old days back to the Meadowlands

Points before garbage time. The defense could have been good but outside of holding the Broncos to 13 points they weren’t going to win.

It's not that simple. The defense couldn't get off the field. That led to the offense, who has not had a lot of time together, to be sitting on the sidelines too long. In addition, the Giants had bad field position all game because of that.
The best thing I read was the offense gets a C, the defense gets an F

“Sitting on the sideline for too long” is a cop out. They could have been out on the field every five minutes and they wouldn’t have don’t anything.
Spoiler alert - it was lots of things.

The defense was certainly part of it, but it was just as certainly not the only part.

They offense hardly had any possessions when the game was still in hand...how the f do you let any defense convert on 4th down 3/3? This loss is absolutely on the defense.
Agreed it was

a complete team failure, but 7 points (pre TD with :01 seconds left), does not win you football games.

So far in week 1, only four teams scored fewer than 14 points:
Falcons with 6 vs Philly
Titans with 13 vs Cards
GB with 3 vs NO
NYG with 13 vs Denver

The average score in week 1 was 24 points. It's again a struggle for this team to score points, in a league where scoring has exploded recently.

It was 10-7 at half after Denver went ahead with a 2m drive TD and Denver gets the ball to start the second half and scores a TD after an 8 minute plus drive. It was a full 11 minutes of consecutive possession resulting in 14 points.

So GB sucks too? Who played against the better defense.

There were also 2 14 points teams, 3 16 point teams - plus 2 teams winning with under 20 points.

Those two drives by the Broncos were devastating. They give up the lead by letting them go 57 yards in 2 minutes including the 4th down conversion. Then they open the half by letting the Broncos go 75 yards on 16 plays over 8 minutes which included 5 3rd down conversions.
Yes, it was the Defense that contributed more to the losing

effort yesterday. But what difference does that make in the overall scheme of what is trying to be achieved?

The Offense still played and when they did they certainly didn't do a good job of running the ball, controlling the ball, and getting impact plays and points from the QB. Did Denver's Defense make any mistakes during the entire game?...and when they did the Offense take advantage of it?

The NYG Offense only had 7 points at the half; 7 when the game was still in the balance; and 13 in total. They are right back on track from where we left off a year ago.

Should we go back and look at 2020 and see how many games the Offense was worse during the 16 games?

It's baffling that people are defending the defense
Thunderstruck27 : 9/13/2021 5:52 pm : link
We got 2 stops yesterday in the entire game. The Broncos first and last drive they punted. 2 punts. Every single other drive from the first drive to the last, our defense failed. But yeah...no big deal.

The defense stunk yesterday. And then, with an opportunity to get his team back in the game, the #6 overall pick in the draft fumbled the fucking football, again. That was nobody's fault but Daniel Jones.

More than one thing can be to blame. You know what would be great, if the goddamn quarterback was the reason we won a game for once. I know that's a lot to ask.

Scored more than the 7, they were in easy FG range but had to go for 7 both times so this “could only score 7” thing isn’t really true. Not to say they were good by any measure, but not THAT bad either, and moved the ball.

The D gave up the late 1st half score. The D gave up the 9 min drive to start the 3rd. The dreaded twofer. The D then gave up more long drives after that. We had one 3 and out all game. Teddy looked like Montana vs our vaunted multiple secondary. They simply couldn’t get off the field. We didn’t pass rush well, cover well, or set the edge well. Denver picked us apart. They were supposed to be the strength going in. I put more blame on them for sure.

Our QB is on year 3 of a rookie contract. Our defensive backfield is the most expensive in football. Maybe they should intercept the ball more. Or maybe Teddy Bridgewater really is the second coming of Joe Montana

No, they don't, that's my point. I don't think anyone is worried about the GB or Tenn offenses. Our offense, which we just poured tons of resources into, still looked exactly like last season's, in which we finished 31st in the NFL in scoring at 17.5 points per game. Ineffective run game, lack of creativity in the red zone, predictable play calling.

I think most people here have confidence in this defense over the course of the season, it's the offense that we need confidence in.
Both units played NOT TO LOSE
KeoweeFan : 9/13/2021 7:46 pm : link
That strategy was more devastating on defense.
Both units sucked
Scyber : 9/13/2021 7:56 pm : link
But the offense went for it on 4th down twice in the 4th quarter with what would have been easy FG distances. They could have easily scored 6 more points if the D had stopped Denver a couple of times. And that could have been enough to win.

That said, the O still needs to play better.
The Defense Didn't Play That Badly
OntheRoad : 9/13/2021 7:57 pm : link

They blew a coverage or didn't set the edge occasionally, but it was more an excellent game plan and execution by Denver.

One thing the Giants defense failed at was that the blitz repeatedly did not connect. They would have been better on all those occasions going with a 3- or 4-man blitz.
It was a team loss
Beer Man : 9/13/2021 8:11 pm : link
as both sides of the ball failed to do their job. True, the D couldn't stop the Broncos, but the O could move the ball and keep the D off the field. The team's weaknesses of the last decade (OL and pass rush) continue to be weaknesses.
This game hangs on the shoulders of the defense.

Not getting off the field on third downs destroyed the team.

Bergen346 : 9/13/2021 8:21 pm : link
The D has to get off the field. The O has to sustain drives when they get the ball. We failed playing complimentary football, but the D simply could not get off the field when it counted which didn’t allow the O to find a rhythm.

Greg from LI : 9/14/2021 3:28 pm : link
But this wasn't a game where they blew leads and lost 35-30. Seven points is not getting it done no matter how the defense played.

Someone gets it. It’s not like we have the OL that can come off the bench and force a few first downs on their own after sitting that long. It’s exactly why when you are playing teams with vaunted passing attacks you try to keep them off the field. We aren’t even close to that and this are the results.

What’s complimentary about an offense who can’t score points?
Defense certainly deserves their share of blame,
Section331 : 9/14/2021 6:09 pm : link
but why cut the offense some slack? Because they sucked like they usually do? They scored one meaningful TD. They gained 300 yards, a healthy portion after the game was out of reach. Both units lost the game.
This offense under no circumstances deserves
eclipz928 : 9/14/2021 9:01 pm : link
to be let off the hook. You got a #6 draft pick playing quarterback, a guy making $18 mil playing WR, a #2 draft pick playing running back, a right tackle who makes $15 mil, a #4 pick playing left tackle, and an offensive coordinator who has been coaching for over a decade.

The fact that the Giants can't get this collection of people to score more than 13 points in game, in a league that's decidedly offensive-friendly, is one of the biggest calamities in all of football.
What did the offense do with the possessions they had?
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/14/2021 9:45 pm : link
Nothing. Pretend that more possessions would have helped all you want.
