I think it was a combination of getting demolished by Stanford as a double digit favorite at home and also week 1 looking not so good against an "inferior" opponent in SJSU.
Helton's tenure at SC was...blah. His best team was '17, which I believe was Darnold's last year there. And even that season, ND kicked their ass, Haha.
He was supposed to be an offensive guru, and they switched to an air raid using someone else’s offense?
But the absolute bottom line, besides the losing(at least to SC standards), is the recruiting. They are losing so many top California recruits, and they aren’t even close to bringing in top kids from other states.
Kiffin and Sark had limitations because of rule violations, but they still recruited really well.

USC admissions have become more competitive in recent years. It's not Stanford, but it's tougher to get into than it used to be, and the Varsity Blues scandal probably made them tighten up on athletes as well.
But yes, USC has a huge endowment, a great football tradition, a big TV audience, lots of national expsosure, a very nice campus, it's in Los Angeles... They should be able to recruit.
I still think SC is still a good job with the right person.

As long as he can recruit I think he would do well in college.
