September 13, 2021 Joe Judge Press Conference - ( New Window )
...

Q: When (Quarterback) Daniel (Jones) was asked about the fumble yesterday, he essentially said he has to be mindful of that and be better going forward, but this has been a recurring situation. How do you make him better in those spots to where he’s not turning over the ball, especially at critical times?

A: Like him, with any other player as well, you’ve got to show them on tape what’s happening, show them what the symptom is and why it’s been an issue, and then you’ve got to make sure you drill it on the field and improve the technique.

I'm sure this has been done multiple times & the issue remains. Sooner or later, the Giants are going to have to accept who DJ is...a good kid who works hard & says all the right things, but who is also a turnover machine & probably not long for being a starting QB in this league.
Overall I Like Judge
Trainmaster : 9/13/2021 7:41 pm : link
but his press conferences are starting to sound very similar.

"We need to clean things up", but the games tend to transpire the same.

"When I look at the tape, I see a lot of positives", but when you keep losing games, the negatives are clearly outweighing the positives.

"As a coaching staff, we need to put players in a better position to succeed", but in games we continue to see predictable play calls, formations etc.

"We want to be a tough, fundamentally sound football team", but the toughness is not on display and some key fundamentals seems to be lacking.

I'm still hopeful, but it's getting harder to stay that way.

BBI'ers said the same thing about Shurmur.

Now they seem to regret Shurmur being fired.

I guess when we fire Judge, we can lament his firing too in two years.

Rinse, recycle, repeat.
i don't care what judge has to say anymore

I'm just not ready to conclude that Jones will forever be a "turnover
BigBlueNH : 9/13/2021 7:52 pm : link
machine" based on yesterday's game in which he turned the ball over ONCE. I'm not going to research this, but I bet the average turnovers by QBs in week 1 was more than one. In fact, I bet that the number of games in which a QB does not turn the ball over even once is less than the number of games in which they turn it over multiple times.

Jones' turnovers were, I suspect, less than the league average in the 2nd half of last year. If not, they were close. I'm willing to give him the rest of the year before concluding he will forever be a turnover machine.

re shurmur
GiantsFan84 : 9/13/2021 7:52 pm : link
i do think people are thinking highly of him as an offensive coach now that he is gone. part of that is shurmur is actually decent at that and part is that garrett is soooooo bad at it he makes him look like belicheck

but i don't think people want him back as head coach

Bingo
Shurmur sucks as a HC.

Judge repeats
Daniel in MI : 9/13/2021 8:28 pm : link
Because it’s what he believes within the bounds of what he’s willing to share publicly. He believes they need to execute and build, not get too high or low. Focus on improving.

Coaches read their teams: does this team need a kick in the ass or pat on the back. Judge knows it’s a long season and thinks stomping on them week 1 when press and fans are out for blood isn’t what a young group needs.

If you watch Parcells he’d often defend them when they lost badly and tear them down when they won big. It’s the “you’re never as bad…never as good…” thing. He’s a coach, not a standup who needs new material each performance.
Completely Understand but
NJLCO : 9/13/2021 8:29 pm : link
I completely understand the learning moments from looking at tape. The explanation he gave for DJ’s fumble is exhausting. How many times over the past 3 years does this have to be explained to DJ? Judge says he’s a tough guy which means what exactly? How many times does this have to be taught to a 3rd year NFL player?
When an NFL player makes the same mistakes...
BamaBlue : 9/13/2021 8:39 pm : link
time and time again, HE'S NOT LEARNING. This is year #3... the guy continues making rookie mistakes at the worst possible moments.

Shurmur is a good OC, but not a good HC. Doubt that he ever gets hired as a HC again.
There is not hot or warm seat for judge
Payasdaddy : 9/13/2021 9:32 pm : link
But there could be if this is a 7-10 or 8-9 team. What he needs is to go from teaching ( with his many assistants) to teaching with results
Teaching is great, but guys are gonna have to apply it
Jones can keep being mindful but honestly some stuff apparently doesn’t stick
I expect more out of defense and I do think we will see more
We should with offense too
We have played well vs wft lately, so this should be a game we can heal some wounds

I have a feeling in the meeting today JJ told DJ “ you’re a good kid who works hard……..in this league”, with a few other negative comments and a few deleted expletives thrown in.
We know JJ has a short fuse, and on that issue, rightly so.
The jury is out on Judge, IMO
GeofromNJ : 9/13/2021 10:47 pm : link
He has no offensive line. He has a running back who has yet to prove he's anything special. He has a quarterback who stares down his primary receiver and still hasn't learned to sense pressure in the pocket. As for Gettleman, I want him gone at the end of this season, even if the Giants play to a winning record. He simply has not demonstrated that he is able to identify and draft impact players.

Bottom line is the Giants Org just can't get it right, something is completely off, and they need to figure it out quick. Start with firing the GM and scout team.

That was on the wheel route to Barkley. I can show you numerous time where he's looking off and going through his progressions. I'm beginning to wonder if he's being coached, on that particular play, to go to Barkley and Barkley alone.

him to say but, I know for myself I am getting a little tired of these press conferences where we are busy talking about fundamentals etc. I fear that fundamentals have become such a big part of what we are doing that we are lacking any time spent on innovation or variation.

The Jones fumble sucks because it has happened before. You can't play scared but, you can't play stupid either. We are past the point of teaching fundamentals. Slide and take the yardage or go high tight. Tiki fumbled like crazy for a few years until he went high and tight with the ball. If you run DJ, high and tight with the ball.

I believe Judge is a promising young coach. Not necessarily a budding great, but a good prospect. If he posts a 5 or 6 win season, it needs to trigger a public GM search with a short list assembled from across the league and not an internal promotion.

Btw, I did some thinking about the deceptive late season “surges” by the Giants and think it’s a statistical aberration, will write a post at lunchtime. You’ve been warned.
I think its become obvious to us all

What would you like him to say? This is who he is, he's going to keep most things tight to the vest and isn't going to feed the media. His job isn't to use words to make fans feel better. We either win and you like him or lose and probably hate him - there isn't a thing he can say to make you ok with losing.

Simms11 : 9/14/2021 10:12 am : link
moving staff around to better help the program. If Garrett’s offense continues to be this stale, then it’s almost a necessity to at least give Kitchens or Callaway a chance to improve the play calling. I’m sure the scheme won’t change drastically, but perhaps the game plan and play calling would make a difference. It’s getting old early.
Hmm, Lamar
section125 : 9/14/2021 10:17 am : link
fumbled in OT to cost Baltimore the game. So I guess even the upper tier QBs fumble too.
Yes I acknowledge Lamar is on another tier, but he still fumbled as do most QBs.
It was not Jones that lost that game. It was the defense not being able to stop Bridgewater and missing about 3 or 4 sacks by not being able to tackle.

Doesn't let Jones off the hook, because he just made a great play on an excellent drive and squandered a chance to get the team right back into the game.
And to those saying he could have been intercepted a couple times, so could have Bridgewater. You throw the ball, you have a chance to be intercepted.

Agree with all this. Except it is incumbent for the QB to make a lot more good plays than bad ones.

The problem is, he got so few chances because the defense could not get off the field. They could move the ball despite crappy play calling, but when you let the other team control the ball 2 to 1, unless you are the 1991 Super Bowl Giants you do not win.

All things factor into the loss. I dislike defending any aspect of the game, but unless it is specified that the defense could not get off the field, could not wrap up Teddy Bridgewater, did not cover Denver's receivers then bitching about one turnover is pointless. You cannot make points if you do not have the ball.

Did you at any point after the 1st quarter feel that the defense could reliably stop Denver? I am not defending the fumble. What I am saying is even if they do score, they will still lose because the defense was never going to stop Denver. Hell, how many 3rd and +5 yds did Denver convert?

I do not want to defend the fumbles but also do not want to hear how a better QB wins that game. No QB wins that game when the defense does not get off the field.
Having the ball more often is clearly better.
Jimmy Googs : 9/14/2021 10:44 am : link
And if it leads to more points, I don't care if the gameplan is to throw 90-yard bombs every play, or grind it out and play ball control. But you have to figure out ways to score more points no matter what happens on the other side of the ball.

The Giant defense was good last year from what I hear. Did the Offense score more then with DJ when then had the ball?

Your comments aren't wrong. But too many here come up with these week-to-week symptoms/excuses. This week's theme is the OL wasn't the problem, it was the Defense. Or Thomas played well but Solder/Peart didn't.

what are we doing...
what Judge or any player
djm : 9/14/2021 10:51 am : link
says in these stupid QA sessions or PCs is the least of our concerns. Judge could come out and conjure up a meatloaf recipe for all I care, it would be more useful than talking about how or why the Giants lost. We know why they lost. Judge won't panic to the media, yet, but there's time.

Oline was merely ok, not good at all in run game, but decent in pass pro...

But even you will not say it. The defense lost that game, period. Denver basically moved the ball at will and methodically eating clock and wearing them down.

Does not matter, they lost. Jones was not inspiring and I am now convinced that Garrett's offense is awful. I was hoping he was just bland last year because of COVID, new line, new offense, injuries, etc. I have no idea why Judge is letting this go on. Graham was inventive and resourceful last year and got it done. He did have better players. But same old run 8 yards and turn around does not cut it.
Of course I will say the Defense contributed to that loss

That is like saying we lost because we gave up more points than we scored. And next week saying we didn't score more points than we let up.

Looking around each week, and saying this was to blame for the loss is pretty pointless if the Giants keep losing more than than they win...don't you think?

Victor in CT : 9/14/2021 11:07 am : link

"As a coaching staff, we need to put players in a better position to succeed", but in games we continue to see predictable play calls, formations etc.

"We want to be a tough, fundamentally sound football team", but the toughness is not on display and some key fundamentals seems to be lacking.

I'm still hopeful, but it's getting harder to stay that way.

.

I guess when we fire Judge, we can lament his firing too in two years.

Just like McAdoo?

fumbled in OT to cost Baltimore the game.

The QB runs the offense. They had what, 7 points in the 4th quarter before that late score?
Jone's fumble was at a horrid moment

but THE bigger issues for him are the same he's shown since college. He doesn't see the whole field, he doesn't anticipate and throw guys open. He looks and plays like a career back up, maybe marginal starter. Read Sy's preview of him for his draft. He was SPOT on and there never has been any improvement.
There are some things Jones does well. They need to construct a passing offense to take advantage of what he does well. STOP putting round pegs in square holes. THAT's Judge's job. STOP talking about putting players in position to succeed AND do it!
