Fangio’s defense forces conservative offensive approach

Jon C. in MD : 9/13/2021 11:06 pm
I posted this article from The Athletic on gameday, but it was probably too late and no one read it. It was an excellent article that broke down Fangio’s style of defense and how the only way to attack it is with short safe passes and running the ball. They take away big plays. They also do a great job disguising their looks. Everything looks the same pre snap and then they move into a different coverages at the snap so it limits your pre snap reads.

Here’s are some quotes from the article:
"Like many offensive-minded people around the league, Rodgers believes that the ideas Staley — and Fangio before him — have brought will represent the next schematic craze. “I think in a pass-happy league, this is the natural progression for defenses,” Rodgers said. “To say, ‘Can you stick to the run game?’ Can you have patience in the run game?’”"

"The central tenet of this defensive philosophy is to limit explosive plays"

"“[Fangio] is one of the more frustrating coordinators to play, because you’re waiting and waiting for an explosive shot, and they don’t ever give them to you,” Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan said. "

"As teams around the NFL look to the Packers and other teams for solutions to the Staley problem, the answers they’re going to find are fairly…boring."

"The plan starts with exploiting the light boxes that Staley and Fangio present with a dedication and ability to run the ball"

"the importance of high-percentage completions and receivers who can create after the catch is only going to increase. "

"it’s never been more crucial for offenses to find ways to turn 7-yard glance routes into 25-yard gains. As one offensive coordinator put it, “If [defenses] are gonna make you earn it, you better have a guy who can play a make or two.”"

"the most effective ways to combat this defense include more running (which is inherently less efficient), more short completions (which require longer, mistake-free drives), and simpler play calls less capable of creating chunk gains. With answers like that, there’s a reason this system of defense is about to take the league by storm."

I am not defending the Giants sorry ass performance yesterday. Please don’t start flaming me or calling me an idiot (which I guess are just occupational risks around here). I just wanted to share a possible reason for their game plan yesterday. Jay Feeley (analyst during WFT/Chargers game) said the same thing about the WFT plan against the Chargers defense (same scheme) yesterday.

Please do yourself a favor and read the article. Even if not for yesterday’s game, it’s really good and talks about this being a trend defense.

running at Miller and Chubb, had he played, would be a bad idea, even to slow down their rush.

Iowa State employs a 3-3-5 and was the first to utilize a middle safety/LB spot.

The Chiefs and Raiders averaged over 30 points, and the Chargers 25 points in their two games against Denver last year.

They did have a ton of injuries, though the Chiefs will score on anyone.

SB out of the backfield, get KG involved early, limit the trickeration with Toney because he's looking pretty slow and wide-eyed out there. OL has got to move run movement and start winning some friggin match ups, same for the skill players.
