Michael Lombardi talks Giants

sphinx : 9/14/2021 12:49 pm
“They can’t evaluate their own players. They over-judge their own players. They’re not good,” Lombardi said. “They’re not even good on D. Everybody thinks, ‘well, we’re good on defense,’ — they gave up 420 yards!”

“There’s no imagination. ... I mean, there’s no design in the running game. The Clapper refuses to design a run game, this is just not a misdemeanor. But look, the Giants have been bad for five years. They’re 28th in win percentage over the last five years, they’re 26th over the last 10 years. This isn’t just a one-time thing. ... It’s one of the worst offenses to watch, and you’re not helping the quarterback.”

“John Mara is one of the nicest human beings on planet earth. Unfortunately, John Mara can’t have an honest conversation about his organization or evaluate himself. That’s just a problem. It’s just a hard thing. He’s loyal to people, he likes people. They’re stuck in time. They can’t get out of it.”

Sounds like it's coming from a Patriot guy,because I didn't see one for the coach who challenges a scoring play.

They were 12th in D last year. 12th!! One game goes by now the D isn’t any good? That’s a little bit much me thinks.
He's not necessarily wrong on most of that
BestFeature : 9/14/2021 1:10 pm : link
But anyone that says "their defense isn't good" based on one game where they have the same team as last year with improvements is an idiot. I know I'm concerned about the defense but I'm a fan. It could still suck but one game in is not the time to making definitive statements.
For the “good timing”

It’s not one game, bar the defense not showing up (which despite the overall ranking actually happened a few times last season), that first game was a continuation of the issues of last year except last year we could actually run a bit.

Lombardi is a blowhard but he’s mostly right about this.
Ah the classic coping mechanism

Pretty disappointing Sunday...but after all it is WEEK 1. Every talking head feels the need to speak in absolutes. Like they have the drop that no one else has. Kinda silly. It makes them look more like a sensationalist than an analyst. The NYG looked like hot garbage in their first 2 games of 2006 - and we all know how SB 42 turned out.
Haven’t the fans been saying the same thing on BBI?
Rick in Dallas : 9/14/2021 1:26 pm : link

Media conspiracy against the Giants, right?
Jimmy Googs : 9/14/2021 1:31 pm : link
Or just go with any of these...

it's only one game, there are 16 left;

what happened before this year does not matter;

Jones needs more time with his new weapons;

John Wilkes Booth was even in Ford's Theater that evening;

The shots came from behind that fence on the knoll.

What did he say that was inaccurate? When you can't argue the message, you attack the messenger.

Look, I think Lombardi can be overly hard on the Giants, maybe because they didn't hire him, or because he's a Philly fan, but he is spot on with everything he has said. We are on our 3rd coaching regime since our last playoff appearance. Ownership showed some out of the box thinking with the Judge hire, but forced him to work with a long-time Giant GM who has shown little ability to evaluate talent.

The problem starts at the top. The Mara's can't fire themselves, but they can bring in outside voices to run team operations.
Lombardi is a clown
Eric on Li : 9/14/2021 1:41 pm : link
he gets more mileage out of a shitty and insignificant resume than anyone - including Marc Ross. At least Marc Ross has his name on about 10 drafts, some of which included very successful picks like OBJ + JPP.

Hire one of his kids like Matt Rhule and he will slurp all day, even if he's barely squeaking out wins vs. the jets.

What's funny is he was an all things Pats/Joe Judge fan...right up until Mara hired him and went against his "the giants have no idea what they're doing" storyline. He's not wrong about Garrett though.

He may hate the Giants and Gettleman but is his critique wrong?
Can you blame anyone for thinking the Giants are deeply flawed?
sb from NYT Forum : 9/14/2021 1:49 pm : link
To any outside observer, Sunday's game was really bad. They got absolutely carved up (Carl Banks's words, not mine) by a journeyman QB who won only 9 games in the past 5 years.

This after spending big FA money on Bradbury, Jackson, Williams, Martinez and Ryan.

And on offense the Giants could only manage 7 pts. and 171 total yards until garbage time... after spending big on Golladay (only one target until the 4th Q) and having three top 10 draft picks on offense.

That's what non-fans see. We shouldn't be pissed when they think something very very wrong is happening here.
All Michael Lombardi is really saying is that the Giants

I don't know about that. The Giants had a top 10 defense in 2016 and we saw how things turned around in 2017. It's a possibility that the defense will not be as good as last year. We will see.

D won't be as good this year?
dee-fense : 9/14/2021 2:06 pm : link
takes some really unusual insight to see that coming by losing DT and gaining Shelton and adding AJax and full healthy/2nd year Mckinnie ...and d2nd year Crowder and healthy Zo and 2nd rd pick edge rusher Ojulari....i guess Graham was lucky last year (and with Miami too)...I am a seller of that line of thinking...hope i'm not wrong

eric2425ny : 9/14/2021 2:07 pm : link
I’m glad he ripped on Garrett. He’s done a shit job here. I disagree with his take on the D though. One bad game, they had many strong performances last season that would have led to victories with a competent offense.
I am not going to worry about the defense after 1 game
Breeze_94 : 9/14/2021 2:36 pm : link
There is a ton of talent and good coaching on that side of the ball.

However, the Giants issues on Sunday did stem from the defense not being able to get off the field on 3rd and 4th down.

That, mixed with the offense squandering the few opportunities they had with conservative play call, was a recipe for disaster.
there is a reason why he writes
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 9/14/2021 2:37 pm : link
occasional articles for The Athletic and doesn't make a lot of money as an NFL GM. If you follow him over the last couple of years, he has an axe to grind with the Giants and Mara. It's something to do with him or his son.

In any case, it is very easy to criticize the Giants right now. Doesn't take any great insight. Hell, he isn't saying anything that isn't said 1000 times a day on BBI.
Not one thing he said is off base or wrong.
Vin_Cuccs : 9/14/2021 2:50 pm : link
Often times these national media correspondents are scoffed at. Honestly, I think they may deserve more credence. It’s time to start looking at this team objectively.

The last 10 years has been just about as bad as any stretch in franchise history. It’s about time people are held accountable, and quite frankly, they deserve all the negative press they receive.

he trashes Gettleman and Garrett. Then he brings up the record of the past 10 years and the running game for the past 5 years. Gettleman has been GM for the last 4 and this is Garrett's second season.

So, why not bring up the 1970s while he's at it?

The brand of offense being run almost doesn't make sense.

You watch other teams play, even bad ones, and their offense looks much more crisp on a play-by-play basis.

The Giants O struggles to execute anything. (Everything's a grind.) It doesn't even look like they practice. There is something terribly wrong.

Victor in CT : 9/14/2021 3:27 pm : link
I think he's wrong about the D. They had a terrible game, but I think they have the talent to be a top 10 unit. If they only win 6 games or less again, then he will be proven right about DG.

This, and I’m sick of hearing about new players, lack of continuity, etc. Even the Lions put up points this week, albeit some of it was in garbage time. They have a new QB, one new running back, and all new wide receivers and they were able to actually score points.

I didn’t place too much judgement on Garrett last year because I thought the team was lacking in weapons. But they brought in multiple players and looked worse on Sunday than they did late last year.
There was a play last night run by the Raiders in the 1st half
arniefez : 9/14/2021 4:35 pm : link
They put Mariota in the game on 3rd and short Against the Ravens one of the best and smartest teams in the league - and fake a handoff to the left side of the line and Mariota kept the ball and ran for about 35 yards.

There's very little Daniel Jones does that above average. Actually her is probably only one thing. He runs well, he's fast, not very elusive but fast. The Giants have Barkley who the other team keys on especially when they know he's on a pitch count. Why wouldn't the Giants run that play or something like it? Where are the clear outs or the mis directions? Where is anything but run to the sticks and turn around or run an in cut? It's unbelievable. No one has been supportive of Joe Judge than I have but now this is on him. If Mara won't let him fire Garett he should quit at this point.

It is what they should have done the first time Toney took the field. Everyone and their mother knew he was getting the ball, it would have been a kick in Denver's ass if he hadn't.
