Defensive philosophy

Giantimistic : 9/16/2021 11:53 pm
Last year we played bend and don't break zone because we didn't have the corners to play press man.

I thought the plan this year, year after we got the corners, was that we could be more aggressive, play more man, and get pressure from blitzing.

Why do we look like we are playing softer than last year with many of the same returning players.

We got a lot of pressure last year from bringing creative blitzes.

Please explain what is happening with the thought process.
It really makes no sense

All on coaching. You sign the guys to play man then just play zone all the time. You don't have any pass rush why the fuck are you playing zone? Play man and start blitzing.
Was going to post something similar

I don't get the philosophy. Anemic pass rush and soft coverage. As a result, Teddy Bridgewater and Taylor Heinecke looked like Joe Montana and Johnny Unitas.
Graham is not good

Just because the defense had a good year when they went so conservative last year and they ran into a bunch of backup QBs and gave up long drives that didnt balloon scores....teams adjust around the league. hes fundamentally not a good football coach.
Both defenses played

pussy football tonight. Rush 3 or 4 and let 2 average QBs pick you apart. As soon as either felt pressure they couldn't get rid of the ball fast enough.
Everyone was hyping up the defense

as if they would be the one sure thing, and in the back of mind I had concerns. After two weeks, it is not good. No pass rush, so we think playing off coverage is the right approach. We invested in DBs heavily for them to play scared.

I dont understand why he is not

playing more man and bringing pressure, last year he was great at dialing up the blitz at the right time..
What Are You Talking About?

Patrick Graham is a hot head coaching candidate this year. It's just that the players can't execute his genius schemes.

I watched a lot of Patriots games and they have had the approach of making teams having to drive the whole field with the idea that they will eventually make a mistake or only get 3 points while the offense would score a good amount of TDs. They didn't have a lot of great rushers all the time, but would get to the QB in important spots.

The Patriots also invested heavily in their back 7, big dline like we have, and smart LBs like Blake Martinez.

We have replicated similar personnel to the Patriots even with some of their former players. However, we have clearly not replicated the outcomes or creative game plans yet.

The one major Hallmark of a Belicheck defense is that he is going to take away your best option and make other players beat you as well. So while there would be a bent don't break, he would take out Mcclarian probably with double coverage and then put Bradberry on their second best wr and Adoree on their 3rd. Something to that effect. It was bend and don't break and take away their top threats. I don't see us doing that piece.
Graham needs to go
