The Eagles will probably jump ahead of us again to take the player we want. Giants will panic and end up with another Eli Apple/ Erik Flowers. It’s the Giant way
He missed the OTAs. He missed training camp. He missed the preseason.
He was a raw receiver who has barely practiced.
Use your head.
This is a typical Giants response.. Only the Giants think like this, lol. Every other team in the league would have been utilizing this kid from the start..
It's like me arguing you should have missed all year and school but aced your math test. Use your head.
I usually agree w you but this one I might not
He’s been with the team all off season. Had the playbook all off-season. Been to all the meetings. Are you saying he can’t get in a game, run a simple in pattern for 8 yds? Nobody asking for 10 catches for 100 yds here.
It's like me arguing you should have missed all year and school but aced your math test. Use your head.
Eric…he’s a gadget guy. They can literally teach him 5 plays every week that allow him to get the ball in space. We just don’t have a OC that can do that.
map7711... the only way you learn how to run routes is by DOING IT. You can't learn route running by sitting on your butt. The knock on him coming out of college was that he was raw with his routes. If he had just missed two weeks, he would have been way behind. He missed everything.
GoDeep... so every time he is on the field, the defense is expecting a gadget play. No surprise.

I mostly agree with what you're saying, but 0 yards is still worse than anyone expected, and I'd rather see him run an end-around than Shepard. Shepard lost 6 years anyway and doesn't have the (alleged) athletic skill-set Toney does. Why is that play being run with Shepard?
Like okay, fine, it's a gadget play and its telegraphed -- if you drafted him due to his athletic ability, get him the ball quickly around the line coming off the edge and let him use his athletic ability to make someone miss. Better him than Shepard.
How much time did Beckham miss in the preseason of his rookie year? And yet when he was on the field he was immediately the best player on the team. Give me a break.
then he was an absolutely terrible 1st round pick.
nobody is expecting him to light the world on fire, but to have negative production and be a first round pick shouldn't be anything anyone expected.
there should be some baseline and modicum of athletic ability that can provide value if you're drafted that high.
I get you have to be on the practice field (though there's no reason he couldn't know the playbook) -- but it's still football, and these guys have played this game their whole lives.
he's supposed to be athletic enough to be a 1st round pick, I cannot buy that he will be good if he can't win a 1:1 man coverage battle at some point. Put him on a stop and go, do something. Cause if that isn't the case, he was just a bad pick.
personally, I think he's not being used well. He was drafted to be a playmaker so the team has to at least give him the shot to be one. He might succeed, he might fail, but for fucks sake, do something. They at last gave Jones the opportunity tonight to succeed OR fail and he succeeded. Give toney a shot at some point also.
i'm not saying he should be a top rookie WR but I find it difficult that you're calling people out for expecting too much when the guy has 0 yards through 2 games

I was gonna use OBJ as an example, but he was so supremely talented that I'm not sure its applicable.
either way though, a 1st round pick should under no circumstances be expected to have 0 yards because they missed camp

I mean that’s essentially where we’re at now. Only, the most creative thing Garret can muster is a speed sweep.

If the Giants knew Toney was going to miss all of practice from the spring to the summer, they probably wouldn't have drafted him in the first round.
Hindsight is a great thing.
I'm not sure why that's supposed to give anyone confidence
If anything, that sounds incredibly short sighted.
There's two points here:
1) They should be drafting someone who can contribute long term, not someone that wouldn't be drafted if they missed all of camp. You know football, you know the draft isn't about just the upcoming year.
But by the same token
2) If you're drafting someone and the selling point is their athletic ability, they should be athletic enough to contribute literally anything -- not even a lot, but something -- at some point, during 2 games.
Give the guy a shot FFS. He can't catch a bubble screen out of a bunch formation? He's supposed to be athletic enough to be a 1st round pick and super shifty, do *something*.
I guess you're trying to be the voice of reason or whatever, but it's really just showing how low the expectations for this franchise have fallen

Dude, nobody here is arguing that he has to be rookie Beckham. Stop whipping up those straw men.

The fact that they're not even using him in the return game is a little bit of an indictment, no?
I get the fact that he's behind on offense because of the time he missed this summer, but he should be able to step in as a returner right away and provide SOME value.
But they won't put him there, either. Something's up.
Evidently not many of you guys watched Mario Maningham as a rookie…
seemed like a massive reach and a bizarre choice, especially with Bateman and Moore hanging out there. They should have taken Lattisaw or Paye or traded back again.
the book on Toney was that he was an unfinished product who had limited upside.
No, you have more. 0 is more than -2.

Using my head I'm surprised he's active.
We had a thread on it...most of the smart money was on inactive. That's where he should be.
Toney is way, way behind.
It's like me arguing you should have missed all year and school but aced your math test. Use your head.
Don’t try to tell me that Mr Magoo can’t build an NFL rahst’ah.
Just a few more years and this is all coming together.
Trade him and Engram there for Josh Allen.

And again, if I'm on defense, I'm looking for the end around when he is in the game.

You would be amazed at how precise NFL pass patterns need to be.
I don't think Toney is going to be much of a factor until early November. That's my guess.

He wasn’t a first round pick.
Was on the field immediately when good to go?
And caught like 4-5 balls and had a TD?
Maybe I got that wrong?

Yes, but that's totally different, because Beckham could run routes, you see?
Why we would draft a gadget WR who can't run routes in the 1st round, with so many other roster issues is a totally different question.
Just doesn’t feel like it’s his route running
Doesn’t feel like it’s a lingering injury
It just feels weird
Hope I’m wrong and it’s just what Eric had said.
