I think I am losing my passion for the Giants

NY-Fan : 9/17/2021 12:15 am
I have been a fan for almost 40 years. I have lived and died with this team and have followed them religiously over the years. I have my memorabilia, jerseys and many great memories from the past. But the present has been another story.

I find myself not really getting up for games like I used to and don't seem as emotionally involved like I used to be. I have become numb due to the last several years. The Giants used to be a sense of pride with their storied history and their contributions to the game. Now they are a joke. Most people I know dog them and the media does as well.

I have come to not respect their ownership and most everyone involved with the decision making with the team. They rely to much on their storied past and the game has seemed to pass them by. They lack creativity, energy, aggressive mindset and winning attitude and I am growing tired of it.

I take time away from my family to follow this team and most of the time I don't have a lot of free time. I am questioning if it is really worth it. I follow sports and this team because of the passion in the game but I am not finding a lot of passion or enjoyment with this team for the last several years now.

Not sure if I am the only one feeling this way or not but it is becoming more and more apparent to me that I don't care like I used to.

The losing is hard

But I also think turning the roster every 2 years is also really hard on fans. There is no continuity to the old winning days.

We have the worst record in the entire NFL since the Packers playoff game. It's hard not to be discouraged. I really wish I didn't care as much as I do, but it's like battered wife syndrome.
I agree

It's getting harder and harder to get up for these games. 3 coaches post Coughlin and it's a shit show and bloody mess. When you begin to get more excited about Fantasy Football than your football team on Sunday's that says a lot. No question there is a very dark cloud hanging over this organization and it has to play out.
It’s funny

I have often assumed that my passion for the team was waning naturally, simply because I got older and had other things on my mind, not as much time for it.

But I can’t discount mow that I think about it that it has coincided with the team becoming totally uninspiring. Giants games are no longer entertaining or fun, they are slogs of performative failure.
You’re not alone

To elaborate, as I think more about it, I especially don't feel connected to this year's team. Shep is the longest tenured Giant followed by Evan Engram I believe. Now sitting at 0-2 for the 5th straight year there's a decent chance the entire thing gets turned over yet again. Sad.
I had two years in business school when I didn't have a TV
BestFeature : 9/17/2021 12:26 am : link
The Giants, I think were 6-10 both seasons. 2014 and 2015. Anyway, I'd catch a game or two at a bar when they were on national TV. I was busy with school, recruiting, and going out. I didn't give two shits about the Giants. I wish this were still the case. I wish I could just have a busy life again where the Giants aren't priority.
I've never in my life considered not watching
j_rud : 9/17/2021 12:27 am : link
But this team doesn't deserve our time and attention. They just don't. They're the .out pathetic product the NFL has produced in the past decade. I don't know if Mara is embarrassed. He should be. God knows I am.
I started a similar thread after Sunday's game
lawguy9801 : 9/17/2021 12:27 am : link
I feel you 100%. The players change, the coaches change, and yet it's the same shit year after year. A loser organization top to bottom, and it's difficult to justify the time investment anymore.
Who cares if you have lost the passion?

But yeah, the last few years have really tested our passion and love for this team

NY-Fan : 9/17/2021 12:37 am : link
I'm upset right now and am probably not going to fall asleep any time soon even though I have to get up in 4hrs. But I think that is why I am losing my passion. There never seems to be a payoff with this team even though I sacrifice time with my family, sleep and my emotional health. Just wondering if others were feeling this way as well.
I’ll never lose my passion for this team
djm : 9/17/2021 12:40 am : link
But I’ve lost all hope. I seriously want the giants to get relegated or just go away. I loathe their existence. I can’t not care but I wish I didn’t have to.

This loss hurts
Oskie : 9/17/2021 12:41 am : link
I think it hurts for a lot of the reasons you bring up. I’m trying to tie this feeling back to the Yale bowl, and the pre LT days, and the frustration we felt, but it’s hard. Maybe age has made me more desperate to win, and we did enjoy SB wins and that was great, but I’m losing passion rooting for this team too! Doesn’t mean I don’t love them, just maybe tired, or worse accustomed now to lose.

If we’re going to be perennial losers, then I need to change my narrative, from proud, strong Giant fan to hapless loser that regardless of the fool that thinks we’re going to the playoffs every year to …thankfully we haven’t embarrassed ourselves today.

It’s a turning point in my relationship as a fan…losses like this bring out the worst.::.

As I used to. I didnt get to watch tonight because I had to work. I had it recorded, but the dvr messed up after an hour so I just checked to see the score before waiting for the replay at 130. Thankfully I didnt suffer thru this one.
I'm not losing my passion
Matt M. : 9/17/2021 12:49 am : link
I think watching with my son takes care of that. But, I am losing my stomach for them.

For most of my life, I mostly went into games expecting the Giants would win. More often than not, they delivered. For several years now, it is more hoping (really hoping) they don't lose.

I was able to eventually get over that with the Islanders in the 00’s and stop watching for a while. I am there with the Knicks. Not there yet with this team, but it feels like it is happening.

Mara has run this team into the ground, and Gettleman is his Mike Milbury / Isaiah Thomas - a guy who will be given too much rope to just continue making one stupid move after another.
What a bunch of softies…
Mcphedge : 9/17/2021 1:06 am : link

Lived thru the late 60’s when my old man had me watchin’ them on our black & white TV…

Watched them thru the lousy ‘70’s when only Jon Mendenhall, Pete Athes & Dave Jennings were worth watching…
Enjoyed SB XXI, XXV, XXXV, XLII & XLIV… lots of great games, great players and great teams, many of whom started slow but finished fast (Hello Eli)… it’s part of the game… sorry, but if you have played the game you can enjoy what happens… unfortunately, too many of you dopes got drunk in the first half (or in the ‘80’s) and lost sight of that…

Disgusting commentary from Giants fans in mid-September… have some perspective you drunks
I'll be honest
AnishPatel : 9/17/2021 1:08 am : link
I went into the game thinking we are going to lose. And small breaks in the game, as a fan for a long time, you shake your head thinking odds are against us. For a split second, at a bar, they missed the FG and I yelled out. 1 other giant fan at the bar, and we hugged, only to see a yellow flag. I knew then our place in the cosmic comedy that he would make the FG. I have no confidence in this team. None. Zero.

I get that it's easy to call people reactionary when you're older and saw the single worst stretch of Giants football, but we're definitely in the second worst stretch of Giants football, and we're about halfway through the length of what you're describing...

For a nearly 100 year old team, the second worse stretch -- especially when it's in the modern NFL, where teams turn it around fast -- is pretty damn bad.

9 out of 10 years of abject failure from 2012-2021 is pretty much equal to 20 years of sucking in the 60s and 70s considering how fast teams can turn it around now. Shit, there wasn't even free agency back then.

Oskie : 9/17/2021 1:40 am : link
Not sure I understand you’re point about being drunk on the 80’s, but this feeling now is equal to the mid, late 70’s early 80’s. Are we still a half a decade and a game changing player away from feeling better? Are we accepting of losing year after year like we we’re back then? That’s a long play…

always up for the game. Love the Giants and that has not changed. All teams go thru tough times. The Giants are no worse than any other. Its just that there rough times is current. I always enjoy watching the games. I prefer they win but a lot can be learned from even watching a loss. Last night Daniel Jones showed why he could be the franchise QB. That is a big positive even in a loss. My favorite player Sterling Shepard again showed what a great player he is. i don't take the loses as bad as I used to. I even enjoy seeing opposing young players that were discounted do well (ie: Bridgewater, Heineke). Good for the underdog. I do want the Giants to win and make another Super Bowl. One in every decade for the last 4 (only team). But the games are entertainment and I do not take them so serious anymore. It will be interesting to see how the team recovers from a bad start. Go Giants!
I have become completely apathetic.

maybe because i feel satisfied with the superbowls? i dont know..

Do i want them to win more? hell yeah, is git wremching when they lose? hell yeah

I 100% agree. With the whole political nonsense and the awful Giants football we have been subjected to over the last 7 years or so... I may just pick up overtime next weekend so I have an excuse to miss the game.
I was going to try not to read anything about the Giants today
arniefez : 9/17/2021 9:46 am : link
But I can't do it. I will say though I'm getting too old to keep taking this abuse from the Giants. I don't have an emotional attachment to a single player on this team. They're all just numbers to me. That's a first for me after almost 60 years. They are sucking the passion and emotional attachment right out of me.

I did jump onto the Joe Judge bus right up front and the bus is about to crash. The Giants are losers and he's been around nothing but winning. I thought he could change things but it seems to be going the other way. The coaching staff has regressed to match the rest of the organization. It's football/sports heartbreaking.

The Giants have no idea how to win games. At least they won't lose Sunday.
I hate TNF and found lastnight's game

What a fucking joke, nobody is shoving a god damn thing in your face. It's just a defense mechanism to convince yourself you don't care.

Frankly, I'm pretty numb to the losing at this point. I don't get how you guys are still so bothered by this, because if that's the case, have you just been miserable for the last 8 years?

Gotta admit, when I saw Gates go down I said out holy shit this fucking guy is right on about 2003....Shades of Rich Seubert's injury. And the 2nd game that year, if memory serves was a mind numbing loss to Dallas at the meadowlands...a game the Giants had NO business losing, much like last night.

Jones may be better than Collins. But man, I can't even say it...but you get the point.

Same here. I thought I'd been losing my passion, but I was so into last night's game and I hardly slept at all. I need to step away. This isn't good for me. And as TTB in Roanoke noted in a text to me last night, "I'm not losing any sleep over this. If they can hug and dap each other up, smiling and all, after a loss like this...I'm not going to give a shit anymore, either"
These kind of threads rarely go over well..

Yep. 40+ year fan here as well. It's just become too much. I can live with bad football, they have been bad most of my life, but the other nonsense is just too much for me.

I refuse to lend my hard earned money to a league that obviously hates me.

It's awful, because I've raised my kids to be fans, and they wont have the same experience I did with my father.

I didn't have to be like this.

Jerry in_DC : 9/17/2021 1:54 pm : link
and you should not feel bad about it. The Giants can't be bothered to find someone who can speak in complete sentences to run their football operations. Why should you be obligated to care? Or even watch.

If and when the Giants get serious about winning, then I might feel like I should start caring. Until then, they are insulting their fans by having someone as dumb as Gettleman in charge of their team. We owe them nothing.
