Daniel Jones last night

Danny Kanell : 9/17/2021 7:31 am
I’m hoping this could be a (relatively) civil discussion. I think outside of the Eagle game last year when Engram dropped the ball, this was his best game as a pro. Especially considering the defense he was facing.

You got to see a lot of what he can do well. Run, throw downfield, etc. The line gave him time and he was able to make plays. He should’ve had 2 rushing touchdowns. He also didn’t turn the ball over.

I’m still very much up in the air with him. I still probably lean no if he will be a franchise QB but seeing games like last night gives us a glimpse of what he can be. I know sometimes people want to compare him to the Dave Brown’s of the world but we never saw games like that from Brown or Kanell etc.

I know it’s only one game but did he convert anyone on here last night?

If he plays like this
nygiants16 : 9/17/2021 7:34 am : link
even if the Giants go 3-14 it would be a huge bonus going forward with 2 top 5 picks..

I saw a QB jn command of the offense, making audibles, being decisive in his decision making and going through his reads and add on top of his running ability he is dangerous
I don't think so

The one bad game last week was not enough to swing the believers and the one game this week won't be enough to swing the disbelievers.

Lucky (or unlucky depending on how you look at it) he has no competition on the roster, so we'll get to see another entire season to make up our minds.
Jones played very well..
Sean : 9/17/2021 7:34 am : link
And while we’re at it, Andrew Thomas had a fantastic game. Everyone was piling on a few weeks back, but left tackle may FINALLY be solved.

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 9/17/2021 7:35 am : link
Eh. He always looks good vs. WFT.

That said, he wasn't the reason we lost last night.
He certainly did some very nice things out there
M.S. : 9/17/2021 7:39 am : link

last night.

But my bottom-line on him is that, whatever flaws there may be in his game, he is not this franchise's biggest worry.
Jones played great
mdthedream : 9/17/2021 7:40 am : link
last night the blame goes on the coaching staff and the play calling at the end of the game. People want to blame the defense but they put us in position to win the game with 2 min left we decided to run the ball and kick a field goal. We have played both our first 3 games not to lose and we are 0-2. Defense should stay aggressive seeing we have good DBs. Not soft zone for the first half.I hope Jones continues to improve and play like last night. Also felt the Oline did a great job against a really good Defensive line. The coaches lost the game.

Jones played a good game, maybe the best of his career. Garrett called a good game that played to his strengths. The OL was solid.

I'm down on Judge in a big way, which I didn't think would happen.

spirits, but he could have been a touch more accurate. He was behind a few receivers, even the last pass to Shepard before the field goal. He was a touch to far to Slayton(still should have been caught). As open as Slayton was, even a bit underthrown it was a TD. (Nit picky to be sure)

But it is amazing how well he played when he was not on his back.
He played his guts out but…
GiantTuff1 : 9/17/2021 7:43 am : link
When it matters most he can’t seem to get it done. I seriously question if he has a clutch bone in his body because it’s one thing to flash as a QB for even a vast majority of a game, but Eli and top QB’s flash as winners with GW drives and stepping on the other teams necks.

We don’t make teams pay — 5 fg’s means 5 times we couldn’t score TD’s as well….. Especially after the Bradberry INT… Maybe it was Garrett but that finish was weak, and basically a summation of the tease that is Daniel Jones. “Close” and “almost”…

I’m more encouraged by the oline…

Enough with the moral victories. Fucking win the games.

The throw behind the receiver was apparently Garrett’s fault

very good game
UConn4523 : 9/17/2021 7:50 am : link
should have had an even bigger stat line (call back rushing TD) along with the win. And yeah, the Slayton throw could have been a tad shorter but it was there despite pressure in his face - context.

I don't think anyone who doesn't think he will be good was swayed after 1 game, but its definitely a step in the right direction.

Going into this season everyone said WFT's defense was going to be very good because of that D-Line, so why does that not matter now?
I think he is our QB
Rolyrock : 9/17/2021 7:51 am : link
He does lots of things well and when having a good game looks like the new NFL qp, can run, run,run and throw.
But you need a decent team around him .

Jones play

was morethan good enough to win the game, and thats what you want in a QB. He made plays with his arm and his feet. Sure you can say he missed a throw here and there or took an unnecessary sack - but no QB plays a flawless game.

Not the game to be critical of Jones. Lets hope he keeps it up.

The thread is about Jones.
without Jones, we probably lose 30-6 last night
mfsd : 9/17/2021 7:54 am : link
he carried the offense all night. Shame the defense couldn't deliver for him

A couple sequences were frustrating, and he was a little behind receivers on a couple crossing routes, but we'll take that from him every game. I can't recall a single bonehead throw or pass that should have been picked off
I'm honestly not sure it matters
Larry from WV : 9/17/2021 7:59 am : link
You have the QB on the rookie contract. During that time you have to build a team around them and make a run. If that qb turns into a top 8 QB you resign them. Otherwise, the cost to resign doesn't make enough sense from a team building standpoint. I think Jones' ceiling is below top 8. He is good, but not an elite QB. He will probably turn into a David Carr QB. He is better than average but not someone you can consistently win with. I'm getting more on board with resetting the rookie QB clock this off season.
As someone who thinks Jones is not the future
BeckShepEli : 9/17/2021 8:06 am : link
He played a really good game last night, now we just need to see it consistently. Simple as that. But if he is consistent and we still only win 3-5 games, we have a lot more problems than we thought.
Keep him
hassan : 9/17/2021 8:08 am : link
I dont think there will be a prospect better unless the Giants draft in top 3 and quite frankly i would build the team out and give him a chance until 23. Take your replacement then if its needed.

He took two bad sacks last night, but otherwise was best player for NYG.

Maybe like Simms and Manning, he has to start his career on bad teams and face the cynicism. Giants way…….:)
Here’s the best part about last night.

from myself has been use him in the run game its the only way to make it work for both him and the OL.
it really isnt very hard. and it is why the archaic hires and schemes of the giants from 1985-- are so frustrating because the solutions to put people in position to succeed are so obvious.

Danny had I believe 4 games in his rookie season under Shurmur in which he threw for >300 yards, 3 or 4 Tds (I forgot which), and no interceptions.

He is the only rookie to accomplish that feat. Do you not think he was pretty amazing those 4 games? So how could you ignore those 4 games?

The simple answer to how can you ignore those four games is…. Look at the rest of the games. Heinicke threw for 340 last night is Mahomes or Brady too?

Jones was good not great last night, but to act like this game somehow proves the doubters wrong is comical. Let’s see some consistent play like last night before you start running the Jones victory lap.

he also took some shots lastnight

The first half had me worried cause he staring down WRs again, not taking any shots down field and I thought a few of the sacks were him holding the ball too long.

But the second half he was completely different and even looked different. he played with much more confidence.

Last year isn’t this year. Their secondary has looked atrocious through two weeks
the halftime adjustments were great
UConn4523 : 9/17/2021 8:23 am : link
and should have continued right through the final whistle. Not letting him try to get a 1st with his legs, and instead running 2 plays up the middle was about as poor of a coaching decision there is (whoever's fault that was). It really shat all over everything Jones did to that point.

Agree 100% - Even how great the read option was - if Garrett had sprinkled a pass option after Jones kept it after a fake - it probably would have worked. Two straight runs by Barkley was just demoralizing.

Saying their defensive rating from last year is irrelevant because their secondary has been bad so far is embarrassing? Ok buddy, don’t forget to change out of your Daniel Jones pajamas before you go to school.
A huge part of it was the play calling...
EricJ : 9/17/2021 8:27 am : link
we finally saw some RPO's. This is playing to Danie's strengths. I have no idea why we go through games without having that be a significant part of the game plan.

Running the RPO keeps defenses back on their heels a bit. It provides us with more options. IMO, that run play to Barkley after the Bradberry INT should have been a fake to him with an RPO roll out. That play continues to run the clock and it gets a guy who can run out in open space.

We are keeping him in a cage when we do not let him run. Imagine what Lamar Jackson's game would look like if they just forced him to stay in the pocket. Here we are comparing Jone's ability to run (Or really his speed) to that of Jackson, yet we are not taking advantage of it the way Baltimore is.
they sacked him 4 times and effectively shut the run game down
UConn4523 : 9/17/2021 8:28 am : link
that's good defense. If Jones didn't pick up almost 100 yards on the ground I suspect the passing wouldn't have been as effective. That's the entire point of QB's that can run.
I have been a critic but what I saw last night was a sea change
cosmicj : 9/17/2021 8:28 am : link
I will rewatch the game today but I saw Jones establish “flow”. He seemed to settle down and was suddenly seeing the field and being decisive. If this is the Jones of the future, I’m all in. Let’s see how the next few games go.

Do you want to point to 4 games and let us point out 20 bad ones, or do you want to enjoy the fact that everyone seems to be acknowledging that Jones played well last night?

If he played like that consistently, we wouldn't be having these conversations. You know, like Brady and Mahomes do.

He is the only rookie to accomplish that feat. Do you not think he was pretty amazing those 4 games? So how could you ignore those 4 games?

>300 yards, 3/4 TD passes, no pics……sounds like Mahomes or Brady

Yes, he established that he can play well against garbage teams. Hooray.

WFT was 4th in D last year

Last year isn’t this year. Their secondary has looked atrocious through two weeks

Please stop. You’re embarrassing. All we heard before the game was how good WFT D was. Now they suck because DJ had a good game.

Saying their defensive rating from last year is irrelevant because their secondary has been bad so far is embarrassing? Ok buddy, don’t forget

to change out of your Daniel Jones pajamas before you go to school.

If you’re here to bust on the QB after last bites game, then that shows all we need to know about you. And what is this thing about busting Giant fans balls from other Giants fans for being a supporter of a Giant player? It’s really weird. Like I get an Eagle fan would say that, but another Giant fan? Weird to say the least.

He wasn’t perfect, but I thought he played a pretty great game. Especially from the 2nd half on. I hope it’s a kind of a light switch game. He looked different in the 2nd half, and like he’s a guy who can win and be great.

I wish they went back to the rpo late in the game, and I wish he was more accurate throwing on the run. Seems like this is a weakness for him (ie, the Shepherd throw/catch on the sidelines).

I had all but given up hope in him, but last night was restorative.

The Danny haters are so blind it isn’t even worth my time to converse with you guys. But, I still need to vent after that gut wrenching loss so here goes…

WOW. Hot take. Umm WFT was 4th in D last year.

Can you not read the dozens of times I’ve said Jones played good last night? Simply pointing out Washington’s defensive ranking last year is irrelevant because they’ve been bad in the secondary two straight weeks is sending you into a tizzy.

What this Jones performance means depends on two things:

1) can he do it more often than not this season
2) how does Washington’s defense play the rest of the year

If the answers end up being “no” and “like last night” than this performance was an aberration
