Watched the tape, my takes:

CMicks3110 : 9/17/2021 7:57 am
-Coaching decisions were really a big factor in this game. Way too conservative, as many have said, in play calling on offense and philosophy on defense.

-Really miffed by the defensive play calling. Adoree Jackson pretty much shutdown Dyami Brown, we could have helped Bradberry on McLarin and done some more elaborate blitzes.

-Defensive Line was underwhelming, Leonard Williams was not a factor, which is disappointing since he was going up against Ereck Flowers for the most part.

-We are missing a good edge rusher from this defense right now. Carter/Ximines/Ojulari are certainly better than what we were throwing out there last year, but they are 2nd tier starters in this league. But we emphasized secondary so this should come as no surprise.

-Offensively, however, there is much to be excited about. I though the offensive line really looked good against some really good rushers. Thomas, other than an early sack, really locked down his guy, and Solder did a good job too. Price was shaky early, but got better as the game went along. I thought Hernandez was fantastic in pass protection from what I can see.

-DanieL Jones played a really really good game, maybe the best of his career. There were some fantastic throws that I hadn't seen him make before, like the tight throw to rudolph who looked covered.

-Shepard is a stud, he is a winner, and is probably the best, most reliable player on offense right now.

-Barkley, and i'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt for a few games, but I consider him overrated until proven otherwise. He is still an explosive player, but he just runs soft, he also missed some runs if he had just pivoted and ran in a different direction. But I will chalk it up to rust for a few games before rendering judgement.

-Golladay is going to be a player, he also needs to be given a few games, there were some drops, but he can be a difference maker.

-My take on Washington; Heinecke is not a bad player, he can make the throws, seems to have some toughness, I will give him credit; there offensive line is also better than I thought, certainly better than Denver's seemed to be. I think McClaurin is a big-time weapon, and Gibson is going to be a good back in this league for a while. There defensive line, particularly chase young, seem a bit hyped and not quite as good as advertised, though Jonathan Allen played better than I've ever seen him play. There secondary is average.

-Overall....Giants definitely have talent, more talent than I've seen in years. I also expect them to get better. But they need to learn how to win, it comes down to mentality and getting confident.

I do expect us to knock the shit out of Atlanta, which is probably the worst team in the leaague, perhaps by a significant margin.

I am excited to play Atlanta because we will probably have th emost explosive lineup together finally, and I think what will be our best line in a while. With Engram, Barkley, Golladay, Shepard, Slayton, Toney, and Jones with his running ability, I think we will really take it to them, and if we don't, well that would be very very concerning.
How anybody

Expects this team to knock the shit out of anybody is beyond me.

Atlanta fans have about as much reason to hope they will beat the shit out of the Giants as vice versa.
Good comments and analysis

With a long week till the game, Maybe we might see Toney involved in the offense.

Yes, that throw to Rudolph was tremendous. And I like what I saw from Jones on some plays he would look left, and then he would turn his head and throw right. Nice going through his reads.

His long TD run was awesome….man when he takes off in 4th gear, you are not catching those long legs. That holding call on that TD seemed like bullshit to me. How did it seem to you?

I can’t thank Sexy Dexy enough for moving offsides on that last kick. What an idiot.

Lastly, both of our coordinators should be taken out to the woodshed today and beaten to a pulp…they caused us the game by playing not to lose in the last two minutes. King Graham is no longer untouchable to me now.
...

Atlanta is probably thinking the same thing about us.
Shepard a stud?
HomerJones45 : 9/17/2021 8:08 am : link
Yeah ok. No DC lays awake at night worrying about Shepard.
Lack of pass rush at all
viggie : 9/17/2021 8:08 am : link
made heineke decent. Watch him vs a team with a rush. We should have blitzed him more and played man.
I think Slayton is Evan Engram part Deux
Dinger : 9/17/2021 8:09 am : link
He's dropping more catchable passes. Perhaps we should give the next WR up a shot because I'm not sure what makes Slayton worthy of being out there. Boards holding call was soft(as were calls on both sides of the ball), but we should NOT keep him out for making a play.
So....
DannyDimes : 9/17/2021 8:09 am : link
Daniel Jones "played the best game of his career" and Tyler "Heinecke is not a bad player"????

They literally played the same game and Heinecke may have slightly outplayed Jones. Yet, Jones was amazing and Heinecke was "not bad"???

He is awesome and reliable….the point was a good point. Of all the things you had to comment on, you picked that one? Weird….

+1, sadly.
Nice post with good observations

I really think Judge cost the Giants the game. We can complain about the coordinators but before each game he is determining the best way to win.

Right now the message is let's play not to lose. That must be very inspiring to the team.

Shepard has pop and explosion this year
hassan : 9/17/2021 8:14 am : link
We expected back in 2016.. Playing great. What are you talking about HomerJones? No one is calling him all pro.

I think what you said may be correct and for the first time I’m no longer believing in Judge. I wonder if he is directing Garrett to make those calls, for example, two Barkley runs up the middle for 3 yards. BULLSHIT CALLS!

Does anyone think Andy Reid or Bill Parcells or any great coach would have made those calls? And then call a 5 yard pass on 3rd and 7!

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! I’d rather they have their 3 timeouts with us playing to win instead of playing to get them to use their stupid timeouts.
the offensive play calling
hitdog42 : 9/17/2021 8:18 am : link
outside of the last drive, was generally fine. they needed to use jones in the run game.... check; which opened up some deeper passes... check... and try to get KG involved earlier. the last drive was tragic- but the overall body of work was strong.

the defensive play calling was embarrassing. it is also dogmatic in nature-- not adjusting to the game... not recognizing the need to get pressure.... the inability to trick a QB that can be tricked. and the 2 "stud DTs" were pathetic.
on Heinecke vs Jones comparison
CMicks3110 : 9/17/2021 8:30 am : link
it's a fair critique. The difference is the Giants left points on the board and I don't think Washington did. Giants defensive playcalling has made Heinecke and Bridgewater look better than they are, though I have to give TB more credit becuase he was under more pressure and made some plays with his legs, Heinecke was just pitch and catch, and some players made some outstanding catches like the TD to Seals-Jones, the long McKessic catch against Crowder. Jones made some damn good throws and some of the Giants really just didn't make plays, the Golladay/Slayton drops were killer. Heinecke was also consistently in better down and distance, Washington had very few negative plays, and when they did, they didn't really do shit.
When you say
pjcas18 : 9/17/2021 8:42 am : link
you "watched the tape" what exactly do you mean?

do you mean you watched a recording of the game on your DVR or do you mean you dissected something different like the all-22 so you can develop more informed opinions?

Not criticizing, just curious because "watched the tape" seems like a strange way to say I re-watched the game on my DVR (if that's what you did).
The calls on defense are getting old
JonC : 9/17/2021 8:47 am : link
There's zero pass rush and the tell they expect it is all the soft, big cushion zone being played by our corners who excel in man and hunting the football. El Stinko. The front seven isn't getting it done and a lot of it has to do with the lack of talent across the board at LB.

Undisciplined, dumb football team not paying attention to detail, cost them in penalties and breakdowns. Hell, the OL played better after Gates broke his leg because they got some new blood in there!

Giants should've won the game, but deserved to lose. This is a trend with bad football teams. And, the overall coaching looks like a young bunch trying to learn how to win in the NFL, same as the players.

Lol. Yeah ok. Guy is probably the best slot receiver in football right now.
Uh, no he's not
JonC : 9/17/2021 8:58 am : link
C'mon. He's played two good/plus games but he's not the best slot in the NFL.
We are missing a good edge rusher from this defense right now.
jeff57 : 9/17/2021 9:00 am : link
Been missing one for quite a while now.
I'm hurting like most are but the silver lining
aimrocky : 9/17/2021 9:02 am : link
is that the offense looked like a legitimate offense in the second half. Hope this is the start of a trend, but this team hasn't given me any hope that it is.
Shep
Csonka : 9/17/2021 9:03 am : link
Shep has looked to be at a different level all through camp and now in 2 games. He's playing great.

^^ a true lack of understanding. Not surprised.

So you think opposing teams only care about players who can "torch" you on one play?

Shepard's performance is similar to a running back who is not going to break a 70 yard run, but is going to average 6 yards per carry. That is fucking impressive and yeah it would keep a DC up at night
EricJ
hassan : 9/17/2021 9:17 am : link
On top of that, Shep took a reverse to the house against the cowboys last game last year and took a 36 yarder where he did break tackles last week. So he also scoring on long plays vs just being a consistent short yardage receiver.
On tape, Olajari #51 wad loafing it all night
MartyNJ1969 : 9/17/2021 9:48 am : link
After that early sack, he was not engaging in tackles and was walking to a tackle engagement adjacent to him all noght. Ithought this giy could run laterally from sideline to sideline to make tackles. This giy is lazy
Ojulari's a young buck
JonC : 9/17/2021 9:52 am : link
if he's loafin the coaches will ride him over it. He was mostly invisible again last night, not unlike his unit mates. NYG not identifying Edge talent very well at all.
Shep is the one player we have who consistently gets open
PatersonPlank : 9/17/2021 9:55 am : link
like we see other WR's do to us. He is really quick and has great hands. Personally I think he is underated, even here on BBI

He is. Think about how quickly some were willing to ditch him because of the perception that Toney plays the same position.
They did give Bradberry help, for the most part,
Section331 : 9/17/2021 10:51 am : link
and they were burned almost every time they blitzed.
And I'm not sure where the "really good"
Section331 : 9/17/2021 10:55 am : link
OL play is coming from. It was better, but Jones was sacked 4x (some of those were on him), and take away SB's 41 yd run, and RB's ran for 27 yds on 18 carries. There were some encouraging signs, but they still have a ways to go.
