Leonard Williams

Ned In Atlanta : 9/17/2021 8:00 am
I have heard people on this site say he's better than Aaron Donald (an absolutely absurd assertion). It's clear we do not have good edge rushers. This guy is a top 5 (maybe 3) paid DL in the league. Where was he last night???
Statistically
Giantology : 9/17/2021 8:05 am : link
They both had similar 2020s. It's not that absurd, the guy had 11.5 sacks.

As to his whereabouts last night, Ereck Flowers is his alibi.
I put a lot of the DL's

struggle for both teams getting to the QB on playing Thursday night. Just not enough time to recover for these very big men.

Both Lawrence and Williams seemed to get very little push.
To be fair, he was off the field for so long

that I thought he was hurt.

Buck and Aikman said he was as good as Donald during the game and compared their stats: Donald had more sacks, Williams more hits, both equal in tackles for loss.

I don't recall them saying he was as good, they said his statistics were as good. Not the same thing.
It's not just one player--
rebel yell : 9/17/2021 8:23 am : link
he has nobody else around him who is a threat. Because of that the opposition can negate his impact. Did we pressure Heineke at all last night?

but I have not seen anyone say Leonard Williams is better than Aaron Donald on this board, and the graphic in last night's game also simply showed the kind of year Williams had last year with no suggestion that Williams is as good as Donald.

That said, Williams has been pretty much invisible these first 2 games aside from a TFL against Denver. If you look at Williams, Martinez, Bradberry, these guys were all playing at or near an All-Pro level last season. So far this year, they haven't come close to that level of performance.
This was my worry about Williams
Greg from LI : 9/17/2021 8:55 am : link
That, once he got his big contract, he would revert back to the player he was with the Jets. Decent but nothing special. It's only two games, but so far it's looking like that is happening.
I guess I see it differently but to me Williams has been the

Best Giants defender in both games. He’s being paid and he is producing.
both DTs
hitdog42 : 9/17/2021 8:58 am : link
invisible the entire game- no push up the middle pass rush- which is what bothers a QB.
only time we saw either was on the last play of the game--- awesome

i have the same fear.
He's producing what?
Greg from LI : 9/17/2021 8:58 am : link
He isn't playing badly or getting pushed around or anything, but neither is he penetrating and blowing up plays or pressuring the QB.

Wouldn't expect much from him now. The journeyman Flowers kept him neutralized all night.
The best DT
mittenedman : 9/17/2021 9:01 am : link
on the field was Allen for the Skins. Our guys were invisible, unless it was Austin Johnson and Danny Shelton somehow getting blown off the ball.
Hoo boy has Danny Shelton stunk
Greg from LI : 9/17/2021 9:02 am : link
The only time I've noticed him on the field is when his fat ass is waddling downfield after the RB blows by him through the hole.
Statistically he was better than Donald
EricJ : 9/17/2021 9:03 am : link
all of last year. So, now we are looking at ONE game where the DC decided to rush just 3 guys most of the night?
Williams is a good player playing very average. He played some
chick310 : 9/17/2021 9:06 am : link
great games last season and completely won over everybody on his way to a massive payday that is only for a few select elite DTs.

There was always the risk that he settles back in to just being a good player that plays very average. And maybe that is what we are seeing.

This defense is missing Tomlinson
Mike from Ohio : 9/17/2021 9:14 am : link
a lot. That was a huge loss and Johnson and Shelton are a very significant drop off. I think that is limiting LW a lot.

LW had a very good year last year. The difference between Williams and Donald is everyone game plans around limiting Donald and he still puts up those numbers. When Williams is the focus he can't do that.
Williams is not a concern for me right now
crick n NC : 9/17/2021 9:25 am : link
Strahan had some seasons that had fans calling him $trahan. I do not know a lot about line play, but it seems to me that line play can be tricky to grade if other players are not pulling their weight.

Because his stats lower, namely sacks, does not mean he's playing worse.
Williams

Is going to get destroyed on this site because that’s what people do here. Dexter Lawrence gets a free pass. This guy was a mid first round pick whose impact has been minimal. I am tired of hearing it’s the position he plays and his numbers are going to suffer for that reason. He has been MIA the first 2 weeks. He needs to be a difference maker on the Dline. To this point that hasn’t happened.

ever said WIlliams is better than Donald.

Why do people lie just to make a point?

I would say a player going soft after a contract extension would show a lack of hustle and/or concentration. Talented players that do their job with good effort will eventually get their statistics.

Yup, hard to take seriously.
this is fucking bullshit
djm : 9/17/2021 9:32 am : link
sorry, but this one annoys me. WHAT THE FUCK were the Giants supposed to do here? LEt Williams walk? HE didn't play at an elite level in 2020? He wasn't disruptive in 10 or so games in 2019, sack numbers be damned? It's not like the guy went from a zero to a hero over night. He was always solid with the Jets and even made a pro bowl.

We're two games in and now we want to ship this guy outta here too I see. He's the only impact player up front, but no sacks in two games means he's dogging it. Cmon already.

Guys don't just stop trying in the NFL because they finally got paid. It rarely happens. This isn't MLB or the NBA. Williams is in top shape. You'd see the signs, guess what, they aren't any.

He got his sacks in bunches last year. He will get his this year.

Maybe the secondary could cover someone for longer than 3 seconds. Just a thought.

Too soon!!!
Just rewatched the game focusing on Williams
cosmicj : 9/17/2021 9:53 am : link
I’m reversing myself. His play down the stretch was very disappointing & he was taking plays off. His physical conditioning may not be up to lady seasons. He looked gassed, often. TNF sucks.

This was after a strong first half, where he was being doubled constantly, in the earlier part of the game, the stoutness of the defense with LW on the field was noticeably stronger than when was out.

For the Graham critics, replay the WFT rushing TD in the first half. What kind of defensive formation was that to stop a goalline play? Running it in must have been the easiest play of the day for Washington.

Said it in another thread. They ran prevent defense at the goal line.

The fear with williams is they overreacted to a career-best year. The contract is fine if he becomes consistently excellent. It isn't just one game. Look how he played at the end of last season during the "playoff stretch".
