Some thoughts, a day later

Jim in Forest Hills : 9/17/2021 8:19 am
Worst part of the night was after the game in the post game press conference, Judge looked shook to me. Like he had a false bravado but was stammering and unsure of himself. If he loses the locker room, we will be top pick bad. I hope that doesn't happen.

I think we saw what Judge and DG saw with Jones in practice which lead to the shopping spree. When the kid has time he can make plays. His two throws to Slayton were great and his intermediate balls were very accurate. I thought his weakness is throwing on the run which we all saw on that 3rd down to Slayton.

I think Jones' legs stymied the WAS pass rush. Once he started really RPOing and consistently threatening the edge, the pass rush died down. Its like they had to wait a beat to contain. I hope they run him more.

Frustrating that DG and Judge didn't see this and pick a backup that could execute the same offense. I'd pick up a Chase Mcsorley. You put Glennon back there and I think its easy pickings.

I hated seeing Golladay yell at DJ. I know they are men, but dude, you were in the game, kid made plays. How about you make those contested catches you were paid for?

I didn't get how WAS picked up so much chunk yardage running the ball. They have no names on that OL. We have Barkley and can't do a damn thing. Is it scheme or personnel, likely both.

Watching last night, I tried to envision what we would look like vs Philly and DAL. I think the defense will have big problems with both QBs. Unless Graham can somehow unlock a pass rush, we will be watching long opponent drives all season long. NFL QBs are just too good with time. WAS missed some easy TD throws.

I enjoy watching Mckinney play. I think he's the best safety on the field, Peppers may be faster in a straight line but Mckinney's instincts give him range. Excited to see where he goes.

Lots of if statements needed to see any kind of productive system. If they can find a passrusher, if Saquon can actually play. If the defense can make a stop. I'm looking forward to ATL and a win but have tempered any enthusiasm after such a gut wrenching defeat. Don't want to see the season derailed.
dude the glennon comment is so spot on

and speaks to the archaic backward thinking nature of the organization. They need to run jones, they should have a backup QB that can run that type of offense and is also a threat--- having glennon is like every other awful backup we have had who is generic and a non threat.
speaks volumes for what they would like to run-- its like they were forced to run what should be so obvious in the first place
Judge was a dear in headlights at that presser

He was like a malfunctioning robot whose Cliche generator was stuck on loop

Not a great sign
was thinking the same about McKinney.
Dinger : 9/17/2021 8:24 am : link
He's got decent speed at least to break on a ball and good insticts. Feel like his is tops out there. Ryan made me scratch my head a couple of times. leader schmeader, make a play.
Judge, Graham, and Garrett

Who are three guys you don’t want to be your coach in the last two minutes of the half and of the game.

You will be disappointed.

OK I laughed out loud at this.
I still can't believe Garrett called that same end around

Where no one blocks the DE. Lost six yards on it week one, nine last night. What the hell kind of play is that???
Judge looks more and more
mittenedman : 9/17/2021 8:43 am : link
like a typical Belichick assistant leaving the nest every day. Used car salesman-like.

There is a reason Saban and Belichick's programs are often replicated, never duplicated. Without those 2 GOAT's, it doesn't work.

It was Joe Judge who instructed the team to run twice into the middle of the OL to make WAS use its timeouts. Most forward thinking coaches in today's NFL realize you cannot give the ball back to the other team only needing a FG to win. Not Joe. Stupid coach leads to a stupid team.
Just a thought but why don’t the Giants bring on a Taysom Hill type QB
cosmicj : 9/17/2021 8:47 am : link
?

He could spell Jones here or there and it might loosen the defense up a bit and benefit the running game.

Bryce Perkins would have been a great guy to pick up for that reason.
Someone needs to go
ryanmkeane : 9/17/2021 8:53 am : link
into Garrett’s office and take his playbook and rip out any reverses that are included in that playbook. It is a disaster every single time.

I disagree with the Golladay yelling thing. They seem to be pretty close - who fucking cares. Some passion might wake up this offense.
RE: Barkley
mittenedman : 9/17/2021 8:58 am : link
It's all about prism. He was the #2 pick with Gold Jacket hype.

If you went into the game not knowing a thing about anyone, you'd just realize Antonio Gibson is a better football player than Saquon Barkley, which is why Gibson makes more consistent yardage.

The Giants decided to build their whole team around a homerun hitting RB who does very little with 90% of his carries. That's not going to sustain an NFL offense, but we just had to have it. We had no interest in the HOF G, the MVP QB or the Pro Bowl 2-way DE.

The false assumptions go to the whole team, too: If you were told the Giants would lose Gates & Lemieux for the season and the Defense would suck, what would you think would happen?
Great point about backup QB.
Matt M. : 9/17/2021 8:58 am : link
And great observation about Jones running slowed down the rush. One of the best plays of the night was the RPO that completely fooled Young, leaving a wide open left side for Jones. He and Barkey ran it perfectly.
Prescott will have a field day against us
Matt M. : 9/17/2021 9:00 am : link
He should put up 40+ points on us in his sleep.
Maybe Golladay
Andrew in Austin : 9/17/2021 9:14 am : link
yelling will translate to himself. Catch the contested balls or get separation.
Slayton had a very uneven game. His routes sucked and he needs to catch balls that hit him in the hands.
Shep on the other hand is really surprising me so far. Much more explosive than I remember.

If Gettleman had done what you claim, then you would by nhow be seeing a top offensive line. You would have seen the OLine's development being prioritised. It's precisely because they haven't done any of that, that Barkley has become a wasted pick.
Gettleman arrived in New York talking about hog mollies, and he just hasn't delivered.
I was thinking
Pete in MD : 9/17/2021 9:29 am : link
the same things this morning. More RPO and 1 maybe 2 new backup QBs (one active, one PS) who ran RPO in college. There are a bunch out there still. It's nice to know the concept is even in the playbook.
It was very lazy of the braintrust
Ike#88 : 9/17/2021 9:59 am : link
to go into the season with Glennon as backup QB. As others have pointed out you need a more mobile QB to win in todays game unless you are Tom Brady with Gronk as TE. I would like more players that are upset with losing like Galloway. He needs to make his plays but at least we know he is not just looking to rack up some stats. Winning matters.

I still can't believe they ran that same play the exact same way, with Rudolph simply releasing downfield without blocking the DE. What kind of bumblefuck play design is that??
I realize Jones sparked the offense
Bill in UT : 9/17/2021 10:09 am : link
with his running, but I still think using a QB, especially a straight ahead runner like Jones, as a big part of your game plan is a recipe for disaster at some point.
