This is a personal, and likely uncommon, perspective, but I enjoyed watching that game last night more than any Giants game in a long time. The Giants have been so boring to watch for such a long time. They don’t score, they don’t move the ball, they don’t make plays on defense. It’s just been a slog of hoping the opponent’s offense is incompetent enough to hand the game to the Giants. For years now. YMMV, but for me, that was the most fun game I’ve seen in a while.
Some of this is informed by not caring too much about wins and losses because I know this team is going nowhere and I’ve known it for a long time – basically as soon as I heard Gettleman open his mouth, I knew it was hopeless. He is a really dumb guy. He’s ignorant. He’s arrogant. He’s lazy. He’s stupid. And he puts us at such a massive competitive disadvantage that it would take a miracle to build a contending team with him involved. We’re looking at a multi-year rebuild after this season, ideally with somebody who has a greater than room temperature IQ at the helm.
But last night…that was good. If we sustain that type of performance, that’s something the next regime can build on. You need to score points to win, and you need your QB to lead the charge. That’s what happened last night. I’ll take losses like that every time over the bum fights we were winning last year against the Bengals and Eagles.
Last year’s team gave us nothing to build on. A stout, but non-playmaking defense + an impotent offense = a team with no upside. Sure, you could have a year where you get some breaks and scrape out 9 or 10 wins if you’re lucky. But it’s not the model to have a real contender.
A team that can throw the ball, run with the QB, score some points? Yes, that is what you need. That’s a platform. Add a smart GM + a pass rusher + another OL to that mix. Then you’ve got something. I’ll take a 4-13 record looking like last night over 9-8 looking like we did last year all day.
Today is the most positive I’ve been about the Giants in a long, long time. With Jones looking like a real QB (granted, only 1 game) and with the end in sight for Gettleman’s tragic reign of incompetence , there is at least a chance that the Giants could be legitimately good 2-3 years from now.
I guess its sad that I was at least entertained during a loss. That's how far we have fallen...
But they lost. And losses add up to 6-11.
The ATL will only tell us where we stand if the Giants lose, because you can pack it in at that point.
Assuming they manage to win a home game with 10 days off, we'll have a better idea about where we stand after NO, DAL, LAR, CAR.
If Jones plays like he did last night, the defense continues to play like they did last night, and the coaching staff coaches like they did last night, the Giants could easily be 4-13. And Jones could be the answer at QB, but they just have a lot of other problems...
But they lost. And losses add up to 6-11.
But he did and they lost. You can only imagine different scenarios before it dawn's on you that your team is made up of a list of losers.
