If you're asking if he'll have full use of his leg and be as "okay" as any of us, he should be. If you're asking if he'll be able to play pro football again, I think you have unrealistic expectations for what can be projected a day after surgery.
I hadn't known the exact nature of his injury either.
One of my favorite Giants. Love his effectiveness and demeanor.
I suspect his prognosis is dependent on a lot of things we can't assess; how badly the bones were splintered, how much and the nature of connective tissue and muscle damage. But if Suebert could come back after his leg exploded, I wouldn't write Gates off.
As long as he avoids any infection he should recover nicely. I’m not a physician, and it purely speculation, aka, talking completely out of my ass, but as gruesome as these injuries are I think it’s possible to recover completely. Or, at least well enough to play again. We will all hope for the best!
I didn't see anything in real time and they said during the broadcast it was so bad they wouldn't show a replay.
Yes. His leg was snapped in half by Price's defender when he whiffed on the block. His lower leg was snapped.
This post reads as an assignment of blame. I don't know you personally and truly hope that this is unintended.
Personally, I hate moving a known factor at one position because the Giants can't figure shit out. People are verbally blowing the job Price did last game like it is a good thing what happened to Gates. People need to open their eyes and see what happened. I'm not saying Price did it on purpose. I know shit happens but Gates' injury is a direct result of choosing to move bodies around on the OL. Gates was not the same player at LG that ye was at C. He got driven way back on that play and others as well. Even look at the broadcast. I think it was Aikman who said Gates is a natural guard. He's not. Center is his position. He played very well last year and that was his spot. Maybe if he played G all camp this would be a different story but he just wasn't the same player at other positions. If he started at C then, imo, he's still healthy and playing for us unless this was just a Final Destination situation for him. Again, shit happens in the NFL but I didn't like the approach to switching him to guard to get worse at 2 positions instead of just one.
and he came back from it. These tough SOBs tend to work hard and come back. Gates was either in shock or numbed up coming off the field as he raised his arm and smiled.
how stupid it would be to move Gates from C if they theoretically signed another C.
Unfortunately, we had to find out.
As robbieballs stated above, just play Price at LG (Price has always been C/G versatile) and minimize the shuffling. The decision-making is questionable on this team and that's without 20/20 hindsight.
Diehl played all over the place but when he switched positions mid year he struggled mightily. When they moved his position in the offseason and he was able to get the necessary reps there he played very well. Look at Pugh, when he was drafted the best thing that could be said for him was he was versatile. Imo, if you are drafting a guy in the first round his best attribute shouldn't be versatility. You want your starters entrenched in their role and the backups work around them. Playing the OL isn't the same as defense where guys rotate all over. That is what defensive players do all the time. They are constantly switching sides based on strengths and other factors. OL are creatures of habit in their positions. I will never be a fan of moving a starter on the OL mid season.
But I’ve had this injury. Open tab/fib. As long as there is no infection or a delayed union (which I had) (took a year to heal) the recovery shouldn’t compromise him. Mine doesn’t.
moved Gates to LG and Price at C, vs Gates at C and Bredesen/Price at LG.
The decision was not made in a vacuum. The coaches had a reason. Was it playbook knowledge? Was it best 5 on the field(as Judge says often)? Was it the best cohesion they saw at practice?
Like the rest of you I don't think moving two players to fill in for one is a great idea. However, you cannot play the blame game here. It is a violent game and ugly injuries happen at the most inopportune times.
Shit happens and the position move was not the cause of the
injury ... my guess is the move happened because Gates was a natural G playing well at center and Price is a natural center who hasn’t done all that well at Guard. The question I have is about Skura ... He and Bredeson have practiced side by side and he’s got experience. Maybe Price has more upside ... but with both of these guys on the roster ... we may finally be totally set at center and when Gates comes back he can be Richie 2.
not a G/C. He won the college Rimmington award as a C for a reason. Gates can be a very good G but asking him to switch with no practice time was a tall order.
I was wondering how he was doing. If he’s up walking already, I hope that means no nerve damage. If he avoids infection ( as was mentioned above,) he should be good for next season. He’s part of the solution on this line- somewhere. When he got some reps at guard during camp, he said he liked it. Price is 24, a 1st rd pick. Develop him, have Gates play guard and you have 3 of 5 good starters. With all the high picks next year, a good chance they can solve the other 2 spots.
look comfortable at LG against Denver. Judge felt moving Gates was the best move. Hindsight is 20-20. If he knew Brederson was going to play this well, he wouldn’t have moved Gates.
from OC, where he was in the top 1/3 of the league last year (in my opinion). Bredesen is a natural OG. Gates is not and it was a short week. Price may be better at OC than OG, but it really should have been who they thought was the better of Price and Bredersen at LG, not a shuffle.
That said, with somebody new next to him, it's still possible he gets hurt. The injury is a freak incident and not really the result of being in a new position. It's not like LG is what hurt him.
But I also agree switching guys around week 2 is bad coaching. If Price is going to be the center, put him there during camp so the OL can get practice time together.

This makes no sense. Price wasn't there most of camp and this move was made in response to Lemieux's injury; it wasn't a shakeup or planned move.
Yes. His leg was snapped in half by Price's defender when he whiffed on the block. His lower leg was snapped.
No telling how he’ll recover, but that’s a tough SOB. I don’t doubt him.
Wishing him a speedy recovery

So they really didn't have to shuffle the line-up at all. Should've just played the better of Price or Bredeson at LG.

That right there was the correct move. Coaching blunder.
Then again, either the coaches were too conservative since post the Gates injury the OL looked as Sy noted “fine” lol…
Conservative…like Garrett’s play calling
Conservative…like Mara hiring Garrett…just in case Judge couldn’t make the jump from ST Coordinator to HC.
The mutual admiration society that is this ownership group failed awhile back when they allowed Chris Mara to have such an important role…
To paraphrase Parcells,
if you want me to cook, I ought to have a say in the groceries being bought…
