NFT: Netflix - Squid Game

Has anyone else gotten hooked by this? I started watching yesterday and could not stop. It’s like a full season of Black Mirror with one premise.
I think this was my favorite show of the year.
Zeke's Alibi : 9/21/2021 1:08 pm : link
. Twist ending is pretty wild, definitely didn’t see it coming and they actually set up for a second season.
I've been meaning to check it out
Tyrion : 9/21/2021 1:45 pm : link
I really loved the main character's actor in Chief of Staff, but I've only had time to watch TV really late at night lately and I figure a thriller is probably not the most sleep conducive watch.
I agree

I thought it was surprisingly good. Not fantastic, but good.
I liked it except for how it ended

Don't want to spoil it but it bugged me how he handled things afterwards to the point of almost ruining it for me... still liked it though.

reminds me a lot of the original Battle Royale movie (2000, Japanese).

I thought the same thing. However, what makes this an interesting series is that it is not cartoony like Battle Royal. Has much more nuance and depth.

The thing that almost ruined it for me was the actors they had speaking english in the later episodes. All of those scenes were pure buffoonery and not necessary at all IMO.

Yeah, I think it was done on purpose, but it got pretty campy. I did think that joke about 69 was pretty funny in cringy type way. They didn't have to make them all talk so corny though. I think they wanted to make it look as flippant as possible, but it was too over the top.
I hope it gets better then the first 20 mins

Playing "Fly me to the moon" while all the other stuff is going on in the background.

That is sadistic.

The first 20 minutes is very “Korean”. I can see why it’s a turn off but it’s typical of their style - very heavy intros that are deliberately slow. But when done right it really sets the foundation of the story which I think it did well here.

The movie “Burning” did this really well.

One other part I am confused about is the guy who imitated #28 and stopped the sale of body parts. Who is he?

That is a big story line to be confused about. He is the detective looking for his brother.

Good I was hoping there will be another season. I wasn’t sure because I know that in Korean shows/movies they like to tell the story and wrap it all up in one shot.
If you liked this, there’s a Thai show called Girl from Nowhere
Zeke's Alibi : 9/24/2021 10:35 am : link
that’s tremendous, especially season 1. Korean and Thai entertainment certainly has a certain flavor to it.
Finished the season last night, some thoughts...
The Jake : 9/24/2021 10:56 am : link
1. Easily one of my favorite shows that I watched this year as it combined genres (horror, mystery, dystopia) in a unique way. It had its flaws, so it's not a great one, but it was enjoyable from beginning to end, mostly because...
2. The twists were actually good! I feel like with western cinema and shows the twists are entirely predictable, yet this show truly kept me on my toes throughout as each twist seemed to reinvigorate the plot
3. The "campy" VIPs bothered me too, but then I remembered, I'm watching a Korean show. Perhaps that's how they stereotype rich white people?
4. Sad to admit, but I tend to enjoy foreign shows with subtitles much more because it forces me to focus, whereas, if they were speaking English, I could look away or multi task.
i havent read most of this thread
cjac : 9/28/2021 2:40 pm : link

i'm finding it a lot more enjoyable with subtitles vs the dubbed version. The voice acting is horrific.
Felt to me like Money Heist and Parasite - which I guess makes sense
PatersonPlank : 9/28/2021 2:47 pm : link
I liked it, didn't love it. Was very campy as mentioned above. I liked the games, but some of the other interactions I found boring
Everything is more enjoyable with subs
UConn4523 : 9/28/2021 3:10 pm : link
converted a few friends on that, feel free to jump aboard the train. Watching without subs kinda sucks for me now and that includes shows in English.
1st episode was enough for me
bcinsd : 9/28/2021 5:08 pm : link
I don't like shows that glorify violence for violence's sake. The excessive graphic violence/ carnage (shots of heads exploding, etc) went way too far for me. No thanks.

It looked like the games been played for years and it’s a shit ton of money that owner has. I know he stated he lent money to get money - but it seems way to unrealistic that he can have an island and set up to just throw around.

Well first, I think you’re being a bit too analytical. It’s a show. Let that suspension of disbelief in! 😜

Secondly, there’s going to be a second season. So, who knows how deep the conspiracy goes.

I really enjoyed it
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 10/1/2021 9:44 am : link
I did see one of the main twists coming from a mile away but it didn’t ruin it at all for me. The main character did such an amazing job in this one. I also really enjoyed the female lead, her being absolutely gorgeous didn’t hurt.

The 2nd to last game was my favorite. Such a crazy concept and terrifying af. The part where the guy did the math in his head to figure out the probability of success and then laughed afterwards was something that stood out.

Really interested to see where the plot goes in the 2nd season.

The tug of war was probably the best game for me. The way the old man got unity for the game was amazing and of course the villian of the show knowing how to stop momentum was awesome.

I wasnt too high on the marble game. I thought it was drugged out and the way the mob leader advanced by crying cause he was losing was stupid. And then the villian tricking the Pakistani was very predictable.

I finished it earlier this week and really came away impressed with how well it was produced, written and acted. Complete surprise of a show that I didn't even hear about until it launched.

I'm big into Korean movies so the whole VIP stuff didn't bother me at all - its partly satire/how Americans are viewed and when you look at it in that context, or through the lens of the east, it makes a lot more sense.

Favorite parts of the show were also the main character and his back story. Really liked the detective infiltrating angle and curious how his backstory along with the brother's will be explained in season 2 (presumably).

I’ve been looking for something new and might just check out some more Korean movies/shows after this one.

The VIP stuff was definitely corny but I guess it was by design.

SPOILERS BELOW…

One character that I thought was great was the initial guy who offers to play the “slap game” at the train station. Would really like to see more of him.

But the fact that he showed up at the train station at the exact time before the main character was going to the airport feels like it can’t be a coincidence. They were clearly setting him up there to cause a reaction. And yet on the phone call at the end, the Front Man was telling him to board the plane.

I’m not sure why but I feel like they want 456 to come back.
I would also like to know more

Start with the classic - “Old Boy” if you haven’t already. If so “I Saw the Devil” and “The Man From Nowhere” should be next. I recently watching “Burning” which is more recent and thought it was great.

There’s plenty of others but those are usually recommendations for anyone that hasn’t seen any Korean movies.
