We just built a stone fire pit on a newly installed stone patio. I also lined the bottom with fire bricks, which I plan over the weekend to fill in the cracks between the fire bricks with sand.
Question I have, it this the best method to protect the inside of the fire pit when we start burning wood? Maintenance wise, anything else to consider outside of cleaning out the ash on top of the fire bricks from time to time?

My main concern is the firepit doesn't have any holes on the bottom to feed it or drain out water if left uncovered.
Also want to know how to best protect the bottom patio layer. As mentioned, I lined the bottom of the fire pit with fire bricks. Planning to fill in the rest with sand. Also thinking about adding lava rock but that worries me about maintance wise and removing the ash. Which might we easier to remove on top of the fire bricks without the lava rocks.
Completely new to this and searching Youtube and Google haven't given me good options yet for my questions.

Good luck!
