NFT: Anyone own a stone fire pit built on a stone patio?

NYG27 : 9/23/2021 4:12 pm
We just built a stone fire pit on a newly installed stone patio. I also lined the bottom with fire bricks, which I plan over the weekend to fill in the cracks between the fire bricks with sand.

Question I have, it this the best method to protect the inside of the fire pit when we start burning wood? Maintenance wise, anything else to consider outside of cleaning out the ash on top of the fire bricks from time to time?

should weigh in on this... he's the fire pit master.

and I’d recommend a liner to sit inside, it’ll keep the pavers / blocks from drying out during repeated hearing and cooling. I’d also cover it when not in use, I have the below and it’s great. Rain and snow will punish it if left uncovered. My neighbor had his installed 3 years ago and it’s degrading way sooner than I thought it would but he doesn’t cover it.

I will be getting a metal fire pit lid to snuff out the fire

Along with a cover to prevent it from degrading and protect it against the weather.

My main concern is the firepit doesn't have any holes on the bottom to feed it or drain out water if left uncovered.

Also want to know how to best protect the bottom patio layer. As mentioned, I lined the bottom of the fire pit with fire bricks. Planning to fill in the rest with sand. Also thinking about adding lava rock but that worries me about maintance wise and removing the ash. Which might we easier to remove on top of the fire bricks without the lava rocks.

Completely new to this and searching Youtube and Google haven't given me good options yet for my questions.
mine is built into the patio so nothing underneath except

dirt and rock dust - water will just go into the ground if I leave it uncovered. I'd probably need to see a picture to get a better understanding of what yours looks like but you might be better off with stone dust or something similar at the bottom - the patio portion is getting messed up either way so i'm not sure how helpful adding in fire bricks will be. Would the pit be too shallow if you add them?
I have no view on how to protect the inside

but make sure it has a drain on the bottom to drain water.
If you have no drain

I'd think about getting one drilled. You just need to make sure water will go into the ground. Otherwise, you will need to be diligent with a waterproof cover.
I just built this last fall

First, you dont need firebrick. You should remove the stone from the bottom of the pit and run a drain/vent to the pit if you can and lay an 8 inch bef of gravel in the pit. Buy a steel fire ring and build your walls around it.

If you want more advice, or pictures, send me an email to the address in my profile.

Good luck!

Oh well
