...when they fired Kevin Gilbride

AFC11 : 9/26/2021 7:41 pm
When did you start to worry about the long term health of the franchise?

For me it was when they fired Kevin Gilbride. I remember telling my brother, "this is it".
When they started averaging 6 wins a year
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/26/2021 7:43 pm : link
SEVEN YEARS AGO.
Nah, that was overdue
j_rud : 9/26/2021 7:44 pm : link
McAdoo came in and Eli had 2 of his best statistical years under him.

For me it was half-assing the Coughlin/Reese scenario. Fucking awful decision and the kind of bullshit we're still saddled with today because Mara is overly-loyal to people stuck in the past who build a team to play a game that doesn't exist anymore.
Well that definitely had a chain reaction
Ben in Tampa : 9/26/2021 7:44 pm : link
That is still being felt even today

And we are more than likely headed towards a repeat this off season.

Right, that's what I was getting though - they didn't have a vision for the future at that point.
I think it shifted the philosophy
Lines of Scrimmage : 9/26/2021 7:51 pm : link
of you can out scheme fast, tough, strong physical players. There was nothing wrong with Gilbride. He and TC just didn’t have the players that win imo.

The Atlanta shutout 34-0 in 2012. I didn't think that was just a one time deal. I knew something was wrong.

You're the defending champs and ... you get shutout in a pathetic attempt at football? Odd.

It seemed like they had no plan to replace that old offensive line. Will Beatty was the starting LT? Yuck. I miss being surprised when this organization did stupid things. Now it's just business as usual here.

I thought something was strange about that game and here we are right now.

And to think 3 weeks ago Judge was the lone thing I'd believed was solid in the organization. I really don't understand it. You can't fake it or luck out all the time, and he was a good coach last year. Undoubtedly. So what the hell happened?
May sound weird but....
Debaser : 9/26/2021 7:57 pm : link
When mcadoo showed up to camp without a full back. Right then I knew this guy is stupid and up to something that makes no sense ... esp cially not that time passed when I had fond memories of hinoski catching passes in the flat and jumping defenders trying to tackle him low for large gains
Gilbride?
Mdgiantsfan : 9/26/2021 8:12 pm : link
I was glad when they transitioned. Obviously the results have been mixed at best…a few good years under Big Mac and Shurm was ok. But I don’t think that if we had not moved on from Gilbride that this team would be that much better.
I miss Kevin Gilbride

Compared to JG,
Even miss his 3rd down delayed draw.

Haha. I remember those. Unfortunately when the CBA changed, it really killed Gilbrides system which was certainly one of the most complex to run. It was a beauty to watch when it was clicking, but was bad when the game starting changing and you could just tell we needed to hit the reset.

Lots of parallels to our current situation with Garrett though. It’s like this organization is stuck in mud and is always making decisions for the future that are outdated by the time they start rolling them out. It’s pathetic.

eh Eli's stats were better than Eli's previous, but compared to the rest of the league...not so much. He was still near the top of the league in picks and middle of the pack passer rating. It's just the game changed and everyone stats were better across the board. The offense was still woeful even if the end of season numbers didn't look terrible.

Anyhow, I don't know when the exact moment was, but when the run game was dying and the line just got worse and worse I started to wonder how long it'd be until we are good again. Still wondering

Sham hiring process with Gettleman and "reload while rebuilding game plan" after anybody with eyes could see that the bottom fell out the year before.

Tom Coughlin was (he wouldn't even shake Mara's hand at his final press conference). After 2 Super Bowls - imagine how bad it had to've gotten. First KG is scapegoated, then someone decides Ben McAdoo and his WCO is a good replacement (that sure as sh#t wasn't a Coughlin decision) - and yes, let's merge a Tom Coughlin powerball/deep shot offense with a horizontal WCO.

That's when it all fell apart.
When they

Hired Gettleman and Shurmur after a weak search.
We can debate the crisis point endlessly but Ill tell you what
j_rud : 9/26/2021 9:30 pm : link
every one of these beats should be writing a book on the last decade of this franchise. The end of the Coughlin Era and the impact that had on mismanaging the end of Eli's career, the terrible HC hires, the sham of a GM search. Its made fall Sundays hell but it'll be a helluva compelling book.
This may sound a bit biscuity of me but ...
Route 9 : 9/26/2021 9:38 pm : link
I didn't like that we let Josh Brown go either. What a black eye to the organization's mission. That's when I realized things were very different and we didn't have our priorities straight.

We have to win football games.
I said at the time
HomerJones45 : 9/26/2021 9:49 pm : link
You don’t fuck around with coaches who bring hardware; it is hard to find a replacement and those guys don’t grow on trees. Well, here you are on replacement #3 and it is not looking good at the moment.

Hopefully we are just paying for on the job training and didn’t just elevate the guy who brought Belichik’s coffee and donuts in the morning.
That was the starting point of bad decision making
chuckydee9 : 9/26/2021 10:07 pm : link
Anyone sensible could've told you the problem on that team was talent and injuries and not coaching.. we've been miss diagnosing since that day..

That's because decision-making in this organization is driven by appearance and tradition rather than sound football analysis, more often than not.
I think I lost a lot of hope
Breeze_94 : 9/26/2021 10:29 pm : link
When they hired the Gettleman/Shurmur combination

I wanted McAdoo and Reese gone but they couldn’t have landed on two less inspiring replacements.

Gettleman has had more ammunition and better draft capital than almost any other GM in his time and has little to show for it. Shurmur was never more than an OC but got hired because he was “an adult”

When I realized DG was retooling to compete in 2018 instead of rebuild. It seemed to be such a huge misjudgment before the season even started.
I’ll point to an unusual moment
cosmicj : 9/27/2021 6:21 am : link
When Patrick Omameh was cut. Now he didn’t receive a huge contract but the money the Giants paid should have provided a league average interior OL, a guy who could pretty much do his job.

For a player like that to be cut from an abysmal unit two months into the season pointed to a catastrophically bad talent evaluation and contract negotiation process.
The Eli/Geno saga in December 2017..
Sean : 9/27/2021 7:34 am : link
I think that was a massive turning point. I fully believe the fan reaction led to a chain of events which priority was one last run with Eli. Gettleman/Shurmur/Barkley all represented that. And they failed miserably.

The Giants are still recovering from this.

Obviously the Giants were poor from 2013-2015, but that is not unusual. Eli was nearing the end. OL regressed and got old. The team just got stale. It happens. But, they never rebuilt. They retooled instead.

Yep. McAdoo was brilliant in 2016. He was also the one man in the building who actually gave a shit about the organizations future and not cling to the past.
Jerrell Jernigan is the point for me

showed that Reese has Mara's ear and confidence, and John was going to get more involved. Nothing has worked since.

At least in 2016, you knew what they were doing and you felt like 1997 except with Eli and Odell.

Daniel Jones record as starter you ask?

8-21.

8 and fucking 21.
