I hadn't followed Shelton's career and just assumed he was a good run stopper.
No.
Really, Johnson & Shelton are not replacing Tomlinson and Hill, and it's shown up IMO.
The S situation has fallen apart. It's easy to assume everything's Mr. Rogers neighborhood but in reality, Peppers lost his job to McKinney in a contract year. That isn't going to sit well especially with McKinney not just a non-factor, but hurting the team at times.
Peppers and McKinney are not really playing the same position or at least not the same responsibility.
I’m not sure whether the drive stalled, or they played to tie. I only watched the game the one time, but I remember fairly conservative play calling for that point of the game.
I'm curious what your thoughts are on Ross vs Slayton upon Slayton's return? It's one game for Ross and he has to stay on healthy but I'm curious if you think Ross's speed should put him on the field over Slayton to add an extra element for the defense to account for?
You have to play the hot hand. Ross deserves the nod over Slayton and to be honest, Slayton has not delivered after his rookie season. Drops, poor vs contact, and injuries have me thinking his days are numbered once the rookie deal is over.
I look forward each week to your write ups - the professional view.
I agree that the offense has been on the verge for a while. Once Garrett appeared to take the training wheels off, they looked like an NFL offense.
Last week I was ready to give up on Barkley. This week, after the TD catch, he appeared more aggressive with the ball in his hands. (yes he has been missing holes all year - maybe just rust of seeing and reacting?)
Question:
1.) Has Jones improved his ability to make the correct reads
2.) Has he improved going through his progressions - maybe more of a function of just having a second or two more to get past the first or second...
Jones looks more assertive, yes. I would say his progression mentally looks apparent but also, the OL playing above average and the usage of placation has simply given him more time.
Can you explain why the Giants have 5 defensive backs on the field almost regardless of down, distance, situation, and perhaps most importantly, the offense’s personnel? There was a play in which the Saints had 6 offensive linemen, their fullback, Taysom Hill, Kumara, and a wide receiver. Hill went in motion and the Saints handed it off to Kumara who ran for easy yardage behind the extra lineman. Even when the opponent has three wides on the field, the Giants struggle to stop the run with 5 DBs out there.
And I don’t care what Sy says, I’m so excited (about John Ross) and I just can’t hide it. The first down play action with 12 personnel and keeping Rudolph in to block is the stuff I’ve been wanting the Giants to do since Shurmer was still here.
I have a hard time explaining that but I do think their backup linebackers just don't inspire confidence in this coaching staff. They probably think they're better off with the safeties in there even though they lack size and power against the run
Is he being turned loose to rush ala Shaq Barrett or is he being asked to play the run first. His inability to make a difference is really disappointing if he's in the pass rush mix. It's difficult to decipher with Grahams scheme who is and isn't coming.
He is being turned loose plenty. He isn't effective, period.
We thought this was going to be the slam dunk strength of the team and it's been the most glaring weakness.
They need to figure it out, and in like the next 4 days with Dallas looming on Sunday. They are going to get run out of the building if they don't step it up.
It is concerning. Part of it is on the pass rush but I also think these guys are simply playing too soft. Soft coverage (fear of getting beat) combined with poor pass rush is a recipe for disaster.

Sy, I read your post above as a philosophical issue more so than individual players choosing to play soft. From my view, playing soft in coverage seems to be a theme for the secondary versus a player or two. If Graham's instructions are for tighter coverage, then the players would be openly refusing instruction.
has been really quiet! Those thinking he can replace Peppers should hold that notion. Post game let us know Peppers was hurt 3 plays prior to giving up the TD but he tried to tough it out.

As I was reading the game narrative, I half expected them to lose. Maybe from reading too many of these summaries and seeing a pattern.
The offensive analysis at the end was excellent. With the draft resources invested in the offense the past few years it would be great to see that unit become a true strength of the team. Hopefully last week's game is prelude of what is to come.
My biggest concern regarding the O is points. We just are not scoring enough points no matter how you look at it. The O looks good but you cant score less than 20 2 out of 4 games and expect to win.

Thanks for answering my question. Great work as always.

If it isn't working, why are they using it?
