just thought I'd start an NHL discussion thread - non-Rangers specific, but people can discuss any team (including the Rangers).
A lot of things to discuss:
1. Eichel activity picking up (LAK, NYR and LVG the rumored landing spots) I read yesterday it's beyond medicals at this point and the teams involved have seen them and are comfortable they have a treatment plan.
2. Two week pause in February for Olympics
3. Rule changes: not much, mainly just stricter enforcement of cross checking. Not sure how it will manifest, but my guess is two places - along the boards and in front of the net where cross checking has become almost an accepted method of play will become a penalty - early in the season expect a lot of those calls
4. Obviously COVID protocols, and cross border. The NHL has a lot of protocols for unvaccinated and fines or suspensions for missing those protocols, I'm not clear on all of them yet, but I do know in Canada if you are not vaccinated you cannot leave the team hotel for anything except team activities. Not sure if that's true in the US too.
Predictions? Expectations?
Always fun to watch a new team...welcome Seattle.
Good luck to the rival Rangers with a top notch new coach (Not too much good luck)
Hope the Devils are a bit more competitive for their local fans

Hey pj, this is not meant to upset you because I root for your team because of my brother (I want him happy too)….but I have a bad feeling losing Weber is going to be bigger than your team imagined. He was a large body who cleared the front of the net and kept opposing teams from getting too frisky. I’m afraid the league is going to try to take out your two smallish stars to be-Suzuki and Caufield- and the Habs really don’t have a bona fide goon to protect them. I hope I’m wrong for yours and my brothers sake.
Anyhow, looking forward to your threads and expert analysis again this year.
And it’s so nice to have a coaching staff that knows what it’s doing. I had that epiphany last night after we called a TO when we got a 5-on-3. Mike Kelly draws up a play and we score almost instantly. With Quinn and Oliver, we’d be passing the puck around and not pulling the trigger.
Habs are not going to be good this year, but I do hope they get some good experience for Caufield, continued development from Suzuki, etc.
Weber is a huge loss. Price is coming off surgery and seems rushed, Danault is a bigger loss than people realize, and losing Kotkaniemi - while the right move - was unfortunate - though I do think Christian Dvorak is better in 2021-2022 than Kotkaniemi.
Out of all the locals, the Islanders have the most to look forward to. The Devils look to have improved. The Rangers do need some luck. I am not sure the roster moves improved them in a significant manner. They are relying on their youngsters improving. I am really bummed about Reaves.
I can see a massive improvement just with coaching and I do believe in their off-season additions, but I think SC is ambitious.

Here’s hoping Reeves is okay. I too am looking forward to seeing what Tom Wilson is going to do now…

I mean that would be great obviously, but I agree with you, PJ. I think right now we’re a fringe playoff team that COULD make a run, but probably still need more seasoning. I would say our window really opens next year. Right now, it’s ajar.
But it’s been pretty evident thus far that Gallant is head and shoulders above Quinn. I liked Quinn as a person, but he really seemed to be over his head. Gallant is more hands-off and more of an old school guy.

Rangers hater. They're winning it all.
Before everyone jumps on this - I think most Ranger fans would agree the above prediction is not realistic.

I’m wondering if adding Savard to replace Weber was the right move. He seems a lot like that Dman you added who you are still paying for after you cut him 2 years ago- another slow mover. I forgot his name, but I’m sure you know. I’d like to hear your thoughts on Savard.
Out of all the locals, the Islanders have the most to look forward to.
Maybe this year, but the Rangers and Devils have a much brighter future. Those two teams have some of the best young players in the game and have two of the deepest and prospect systems. Islanders…not so much.
But with Barry Trotz, who knows? He can make chocolate mousse out of shit.

Alzner?
Savard makes half now of what Alzner did 4 years ago.
Savard is not a good defenseman, wasn't really signed to replace Weber, but it's a low level contract ($3.5M per year for 4 years). I'd have preferred shorter term, but that's not a killer contract.

They will go as far IMO as Lehner takes them, and I like Lehner, seems like a good person and he's clearly goalie who has all the potential in the world, but I'd be nervous about him for a variety of reasons.
The disappearing act in the playoffs by Stone would also concern me. Dominated by Philip Danault.

Team Sweden has named Victor Hedman, Mika Zibanejad and Gabriel Landeskog as the first three members of their 2022 Olympic roster.
Very happy to see Boston leave the division. Hopefully someone can knock Tampa out early for once this year.
I'm very excited to see the Devils this season even if they are probably a year away from contending for a playoff spot.
I think both Mercer and Holtz are locks to start in NJ as both have had great camps and preseasons. The Sharangovich Hughes and Holtz line in the preseason has been outstanding and I would like to see them together to open the season. As for Graves and Hamilton I would prefer to split them up. I am hoping that Smith plays with Hamilton with Graves moving to the second line to team with Severson.
I agree the only problem is that would leave just Walsh as the only RD ready to step in. I would rather keep Subban early on since it won't be easy to move him because of his cap number. Regardless this will be the last year that Subban is a Devil.
For the NYI im ridiculously overexcited about Chara back. imo he's still a massive presence even if he's not nearly what he was in terms of minutes and hockey impact. They are going to lose some speed/offense with Leddy but he was up and down. Chara should be a really good partner for Dobson and make them even more of a pain to play against.
It will also be interesting to see if Parise has anything left. the PP has been the NYI biggest weakness. even incremental improvement there will have an impact.

I’ve heard that the Isles are internally very optimistic with what they’ve seen from Parise in camp, so we’ll see. Wahlstrom hasn’t had the best camp and there’s a possibility he starts in AHL, but hopefully they are just trying to motivate him.
I truly believe the Islanders have a real shot at the Cup this year, which is something I have not seen since I was in high school and Billy Smith was terrorizing Wayne Gretzky.
Let's drop the puck and get going!
I'd love him to shake loose somehow, but doubt it. You never know with OTT though. The list of top 6 forwards and top 4 D they've traded is lengthy.
Both Tkachuk's IMO are the type of player I'd build around.
Yea, that wouldn’t surprise me. Maybe give Bellows a chance to start the year. Isles are apparently worried Johnston would be claimed on waivers, so expect to see him make the team.
Gustaffson has had a nice camp too and is dynamite on the power play. Issues are that isles would need to sign him which adds to the cap and Trotz might not want to carry a power play specialist.

This is the third year in a row that the Isles are a legit cup contender and IMO the window should be open for a while.
They’ve just had the unfortunate luck to run a dynasty in the ECF back to back years. They are only short by a goal last year. Have to think they’d have won it all if the captain wasn’t hurt.

As an Islander fan, I will take that all day. I’d prefer to be a top team with the window open as opposed to hoping to reach that level soon.
The Rangers and Devils have a ton of young talent, but that is only one piece of a larger puzzle. For the Rangers, the you likely have a three year window with Gallant before he is gone. Getting from non-playoff team to SC Champion in 3 years is a tall order and will require a lot more than Kakko and Laf playing up to potential.
I can see a massive improvement just with coaching and I do believe in their off-season additions, but I think SC is ambitious.
hahaha. The cup? Who the hell are you seeing predicting the Rangers to win the cup?
Pens and Caps are teetering close to edge of possible quick decline soon. Caps are getting some age in key spots and having trouble with getting enough depth/young talent coming up. Same with Pens and its looking more like Malkins not a guy who can play a full physical game and last late into the season. They've both had great runs, but the bottom is going to fall out on them at some point and probably quickly.
Isles have been in a window now couple years. I think this is really a set of make or break years this season and next for them to get to the mountaintop. They still have solid talent in place, but Lou's made it clear they are a win now club and fans have to be ready for a possible rough/extended retool period coming in future years.
They could. All I ask for is some exciting and consistently competitive hockey after the last three seasons where, outside of a game here or there, or excitement with a young player making debut, it's been hard to watch.
Pelech/Pulock are each 27. Dobson will likely be 3rd in mpg on D and he's 21. They actually have a decent pipeline of D at bridgeport too.
Sorokin is 26 and signed for 3 years.
any team trying to contend is going to have some veterans they need to recycle over time but the oldest players in the top 6 for the isles are Bailey (32) and Lee (31). The few really old players on the roster are on 1 year vet minimum deals (Parise, Greene, Chara).
the most important NYI is 59 and as long as he's behind the bench they will likely be competitive for the playoffs. The guy has made the playoffs like 20 of the last 21 years with all sorts of different rosters.
Quote:
Sooner rather than later. I'd much rather that spot on the 3rd pairing go to Bahl or Walsh or Sieganthaler. Don't get me wrong I like him he's a good guy and provides leadership and upside as a 3rd pairing guy I just would rather see a young guy get the chance. If we are out of it by the deadline PK is a goner then any way as an expiring.

Cap# is no issue. We can recapture any money we want of his salary in a deal. We're still way under the cap in fact I'd welcome it because it's only this season and it will better the return.
The tuna (tatar) is so underrated, and Dougie Hamilton other than being scared of Ovi is about as solid as you get as a two-way defenseman. And Graves was disappointing in the PO's but otherwise he's been very steady.
Blackwood needs to be better and Bernier needs to prove he can be consistently reliable or not much of it matters.

Yep I completely agree on the goaltending. I feel Blackwood has it in him to be a #1 on a winning team, he started out hot last year but then got Covid and wasn't the same afterwards. Was it Covid? Fatigue? Or simply coming back to earth. Bottom line he has to prove it for a full season. I think the metro area here has some exciting times ahead with the Isles being a solid cup contender and the young talent of the Rangers and Devils. I would hope Pitt and Washington would fall off at some point but I'll believe it when I see it. Ovi seems capable of scoring 50 forever and just when you count the Pens out, they had a great regular season last year.

Blackwood was one of the best goaltenders in hockey prior to COVID. When he came back he was absolutely awful until later in the season when he began to turn around again. He is the key to the Devils success this season. I like Bernier but I don't want him playing 45+ games. Blackwood isn't vaccinated which is going to be a major issue when the team travels to Canada.
I think WAS, PIT, NYR, PHI all comparable and will finish within a couple points of each other - and this is where coaching (Gallant) can make a difference. Even CAR has goalie issues that can sink a season.
but I also think the top 3 teams in the Atlantic (TBL, TOR, and BOS) are better than the best teams in the Metro with BOS main question being common theme around the league....goalie. I might even put FLA above the Metro teams.
The Atlantic is stacked (at the top) this year (on paper).

Very good post. The Isles are a veteran team, but the perception that their core is 30 years old and about to decline is inaccurate.
Their talent pipeline on the offensive side is not great, but as you mentioned, their scoring is largely coming from guys in their mid-to-late 20s. Lee, Nelson and Bailey are between 30 and 32 and none rely on speed/skating as a big part of their game.
The 4th line is getting up there, but I have no doubt Lou and Barry can handle a transition on that line over the next couple of years.
USA has their best crop of players for an Olympics ever, but man Canada is so stacked (as usual).

So much top end talent, I think they will rise over the 82 games under Gallant.
Question for Rangers fans, is there anyone who would prefer Eichel to Mika? I've yet to encounter that sentiment

Fair. I wouldn't be shocked at the Devils doing well. Hughes' development far outpaced his point production, IMO.

Eichel is so much better than Mika and much younger. My issue is the cost to acquire Eichel and what you do with Mika. Can you trade Mika to VGK and send those assets to Buffalo? I think giving Mika the deal he deserves (7/8 years, $9mm+) would be a disaster for NYR.
What I mean is it took Panarin before Mika became a PPG player.
Eichel was producing at a PPG pace with anchors like Jimmy Vesey and Kyle Okposo or the corpse of Jeff Skinner, or decent but not great players like Sam Reinhart and Victor Olofsson.
In other words, Eichel is the guy driving the offense, not the beneficiary of another players skill like Mika when Panarin was added. And it's not a knock on Mika, he's a great player, but it's my opinion.

man, the west sucks, top 2 or 3 teams and the rest is a morass of mediocrity.
I can see a CHI revival with Jones (both Jones brothers) and MAF if MAF has anything at all left in the tank. Plus they get Toews back and hopefully Kirby Dach.
Dark horse in the west would be the Blackhawks.

we'll see it's certainly possible but Trotz seems to know how to keep gas in the tank during the regular season. The NYI regular seasons the last 3 years were almost identical despite different talent levels - 1 month where they don't lose, 1 month where they almost never win, and in between they get enough points to keep pace. The names change but the results have been consistent - close to the top of the league in GA, 1 or 2 guys get Vez noms, mediocre to bad PP.
They get Lee back, add Chara/Parise, and seem to have a lot more quality extra players this year (Panik, Gustafsson, Bellows). Tampa lost a lot of depth so I have to think they sense that this is their chance.

Hearing today is a good day to be a Florida Panther — an extension for Aleksander Barkov is nearing.
I am a big fan of Walsh and he flashed impressive offensive skills this preseason but he does need some more development time in the AHL. Hopefully the Devils can move Subban at the deadline opening up a spot for Walsh who could be ready midseason. The Siegenthaler Subban line has looked good in the preseason and they will be the 3rd pairing to start the season.

Hearing Barkov extension comes in at 8x$10M, with majority coming in signing bonuses. Panthers step up and keep their captain.
Unlike most Ranger fans I'm happy with the off season and glad they're trying to become a more physical team and like the coaching change. But IMO they're not competing for anything more than a spot in the playoffs until the improve their centers. I'd try Goodrow or Barron as the third line center and put Chytil on RW. He's not a center but he's good.
I watched very little of the pre season but what I saw from Jones and Schneider intrigues me a lot. Have the Rangers ever had a better suited pair developing in the minors than those two? I hope they keep them together as a pair in NY before long.
If I was GM for a day I'm not signing Mika for 7/8+ years when he's 29 years old. If he walks he walks. That opens money for a free agent or a trade. Anyone want a do over on the Kreider contract? I do and this is the same thing if not worse. I know I said they have to improve their centers and I'm saying let him walk but it's hard cap league and hard choices have to be made. If the 2nd line plays as well as I expect I'd try to resign Strome at my price to keep it together.
Fox is going to break the bank next year, Kakko and Lafreniere are going to need to be paid too soon. Drury is going to have to figure out who to keep who walks and who to trade from the prospect pool. But I think they are going in the right direction. We'll see in 82 games.
Might also take in a game at the Isles new USB FishStick Arena. I’ve already been hearing about what a disappointing dump that place is so the lowlife Fishsticks fans should feel right at home. Anyway, I’m sure there will be plenty of seats available late in the season when the Isles are in the basement.

You can always assume I’m talking out of my ass. I’m a Rangers fan. I’m sure the new Gortons ice palace will be just fine.
I'm mixed on NYR offseason. Watched 7 periods or so of pre-season (rotated many Hartford-bound with the NHL-bound), and Gallant + grit will make a difference. I'm just not sure how much.
And, yes, the biggest issue remains down the middle:
- not enough creativity or defense at C,
- team still seems weighted toward and on the wings, and thus predictable, defendable
- have said for nearly two seasons Chytil is more suited to a winger, needs to be much, much better in finishing
- pj's analysis of Eichel vs Mika is not off (but Panarin had Strome as his C, not Mika?) in terms of creativity/making the players on your line better
- give me Hertl.
Strome, Chytil and Rooney as your C2, C3 and C4 aren't going to scare anyone. It's a weakness. But adding Eichel now and losing Mika in '22 isn't going to improve that, imo.
I think it's more than Xs and Os on Mika/Eichel. Yes, the latter is younger, but his neck (fragile, repaired vertebrae, how resilient?) + his contract--5 more very expensive years? Is a new contract for Mika, at 29, that much worse? I don't buy the Kreider comp.
But to me it's more nuanced than that: having sent Buch packing, is Drury really going to send a 2nd forward who has been so central to the Rangers' attack and glue packing? To me, that's too much of a culture shock, for a young club trying to establish its identity. More of a gut punch. For all the NA grit added, the Euros on this team are a core part of that identity, creativity in the offensive end.
Lundkvist, Schneider, Robertson (latter two already Hartford bound?), Fox/Lindgren, KAM/JT and Lundkivst/Nemeth, and more, a lot to grow. KAM as good as he was as a rookie has to eliminate a lot of mistakes/giveaways. Think Trouba's absence for the last ~20 games was underappreciated, even if, yes, there are not a few here who think he's overpaid and undertalented. He, Kreider, and Fox lead contenders for the Captain's jersey.
Agree with concerns about Igor's durability. He's got to be the midget among NHL netminders, in an era of behemoths. Can always brink Henrik off the Ass't GK coach bench?? (jk)
Will take GG time to re-make the play of this team in his own image, no Miracle on Ice in the short term: pre-season Rangers looked a lot like last season's version.
He doesn't lack offensive creativity at all, just not sure about his D/face offs, but he seems like a player who could develop if they get him the right coaching and mentor-ship.
I couldn't watch it, no NHL Network, but apparently KK looked really good, Rangers played w/o Zib, Panarin and Kreider, yet 5 goals vs Isles, who according to some were going with pretty much their starters (no way for me to verify), who were very chippy (same). Trouba on ice for all 4 Isles' scores. Georgiev in net but apparently played solid (same).
If the Rangers can get that kind of production minus half of their top 6, whoa!
pj, I like the idea of Vitaly at C, but he needs to grow his body bigger and stronger and become more tenacious in his open ice checking game. imo, he's not so lacking along the boards.
However slowly or quickly the Rangers become more cohesive under GG, it will be interesting to assess DQ, albeit some of the 'kids' are a year older.

It's important.
Fox doesn't get an A?
What do these teams have in common?
The six teams without a captain are the Arizona Coyotes, Buffalo Sabres, Calgary Flames, Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers, and Ottawa Senators
they're all shitty in case you can't guess with the exception of the NYR IMO. CAL not putrid, and could make the playoffs with some luck, and I expect Tkachuk to be their captain if he's re-signed. Unlike the NYR, CAL does not have veterans like Mika, Trouba, Panarin, and Kreider signed long term.
The Rangers just signed Mika to an 8 year extension, he'll be a NYR for 14 years or so when it ends (if he plays it out). He should be the captain now. You can always adjust.

Working on exact terms, but hearing Montreal and Nick Suzuki are closing in on a long-term extension. Good way to start the season.
IDK, I think it'd be pretty awkward to strip ZIbanejad of the C just to put it on Laf or Fox.

it depends how they determine captain.
Sharks reassigned captain from Thornton to Pavelski - Thornton took the A after that.
And even before that went from Marleau to Rob Blake.
Marleau wore an A for almost a decade after that.
EDM "took" captain away from Ference before making McDavid captain.
I don't think it's what you think.
I'm in a league with my hockey teammates. not auction, it's snake draft. I always think my team is awesome but usually finish middle of the pack.

Hearing NYR have given Vitali Kravtsov permission to contact other clubs in seek of a trade. Kravtsov did not make the Opening Day roster.
it's why hockey is harder than football at drafting. these kids are 17/18 when you draft them. Hard to project intangibles (or even tangibles in some cases) and often it's the small things that make the difference between AHL/NHL.
Glad we traded Buchnevich to make room for Kravtsov.
that leaves ARI, CAL, BUF, OTT, and NYR with no captain.
Not a group I'd like to be part of and it's not just a formality IMO. - also though not making it into a huge issue, but I'd have a captain.

Yeah that's a solid team. Pasta could have a huge year, Point is solid and Carlson is always underated. He goes behind Fox, Makar but him and Hamilton are about as reliable as it gets from the back line. I like your goaltending too.nKnight is a real breakout candidate, anyone who plays net for the Isles puts up great #'s and Varlomov seems to have a mysterious injury. You can't go wrong with Samsonov I always like solid if not spectacular goalies on good teams. I'm like you PJ I always like my team out of the draft, but always seem to struggle. It's by far my worst fantasy sport.

People trying to pin this on Kravtsov. When you sign a KHL phenom to an entry-level contract *that includes a European Reassignment Clause* and then play games on Year 3 of that ELC? These are the prizes you win.

His AHL salary is ~$400/day
His NHL salary is between $4600 - $9200 per day (depending on performance bonuses)

You can call him a crybaby but all this to *maybe* preserve Libor Hajek? Can you blame him?
Kravtsov was the #9 overall pick in the draft and is in year 3 of his ELC.
The Rangers should be putting him either in a position to succeed or pumping up his value to trade him.
Neither of those is accomplished in the AHL.
This blurb from EP I think nails Kravtsov and it's probably what drives coaches crazy. Sort of Malkin syndrome (though not comparing the two really) where the player has so much skill but seems to only give max effort when they want to.

I'm all for due process and divoces get messy so be careful to listen to one side's accusations. However there seems to be a whole lot of smoke around Kane for there to be no fire at all.
yep definately the gambling is the big problem. If you saw his interview with Linda Cohn, it was pretty much a non-denial denial. Sounded very Pete Rose-ish. "Yes I have a big gambling problem but I never ever bet on hockey!"

What did you guys think about the feature they did at the opening on the guy that composed the ESPN hockey theme? Overall I liked it if you can get past the douche chills of Justin Bieber narrating it. A few things though:
1. A little long. 6 minutes for an opening? Come on
2. The line about that theme not being heard on ESPN since hockey left the network is total BS. Every time they've done a hockey segment the past 15 or 20 years they've played it.
I was very disappointed about this at first because he looked great with Hughes and Sharangovich but the kid is only 19 and the Devils have rushed too many young players up too soon lately. It's probably better to let him spend time in Utica on the top line for more seasoning. It's no surprise that Mercer made the team but I just hope that they use him at center and move Zacha back to wing where he thrived.

I think he played well enough to make the team but they want him getting top 6 and PP time down there being as he's only 19. I'm mixed on it. While I agree with Ruff's premise, the fact is the AHL is not a great developmental league for top prospects and frankly if he out played other players in camp he should be on the roster to start for at least a little bit to see if he can handle the speed of regular season NHL.

I know Ruff intimated on multiple occasions in camp that Zacha was a C for now, but that he'd love for other options. I agree hopefully he puts Mercer there. Zacha played the best hockey of his career at wing last season.

I understood it at the beginning of camp but with Mercer performing as I expected I think that he should be the 3rd line center with McLeod as the 4th. This is how I arrange the lines.
Tatar Hughes Sharangovich
Zacha Hischier Bratt
Kuokkanen Mercer Johnsson
Wood McLeod Vesey
Smith Hamilton
Graves Severson
Siegenthaler Subban
I agree, Kuokkanen was very good last season when he played with Hughes and Sharangovich but that was mostly a product of Hughes and Sharangovich. Kuokkanen is a 3rd line player on a playoff team. I would much rather see a better play like Tatar on the first line.

for now, Knight is backing up Bob (but it's only been 3 games). Florida can win a stanley cup this year IMO
again, placed on LTIR giving TBL 9.5M to play with. Eichel?
anyway, I am not convinced TBL repeats last year (don't forget I think CAR won the central, not TBL, TBL came in 3rd).
Without Kucherov and losing their 3rd line, I can see TBL struggle (hopefully)
Still no clue why CAR traded Nedeljkovic. I don't hate Freddy Anderson, but Nedeljkovic was great.
I agree they regressed a little, but hey they are paying Kotkaniemi 6M for 3rd line production on a 1-year deal to screw the habs.
Still like them in the Metro.
(I also forgot CAR was back in the metro, lol)
I think the Atlantic is the superior division this year.
Let's hope that it's not serious because losing Hughes is a massive blow to the Devils slim playoff chances. Everyone is wondering if Holtz will be called up to replace Hughes but I think the Devils will bring up Boqvist instead.
Shows some players it makes sense to develop in the NHL others would never have grown like Hughes did being up against bigger, stronger players.
To use the cliche it seems like the game has slowed down for him.
Hope he's ok.
Contrast Hughes development with someone like his old friend and USNDTP linemate, Cole Caufield.
I also noticed Cole Caufield improved significantly in areas I didn't think he'd improve. I thought Cole would be *just* a sniper (which would have been fine) - Caufield's wrist shot is as good as I've seen, but I never expected his skating would improve the way it has. he is a legit burner out there now.
Caufield spent two years at Wisconsin in NCAA, Hughes spent 2 years in the NHL. Both got good outcomes (so far).
sometimes staying home as a 18-21 year old, the maturation years for some, makes sense.
He was 23 before he came over to the NHL.
Teams need to be flexible and fan bases need patience.
agree. would have been cool to see if he went to Michigan (?) or wherever he committed to for NCAA how he'd be if he made his debut this year.
to clarify though, while I agree he had no business being in the NHL at 18, I had watched him play for years and his talent was clear as day, but seeing him on draft night looking like Kathryn Tappen's young son where she towered over him (in height and body lol) on the stage was a little I don't know jarring I guess. but maybe those two years in the NHL when he didn't belong there helped make him the (dominant) player we saw these first couple games.

Good point. I do think Jack benefitted from being with the big team the summer after his first season when he noticably gained size and strength.
True, I'm glad that it wasn't detrimental to his development. The Devils were wise to let Luke Hughes play at Michigan for this season. They can evaluate his performance in college and decide in a year whether he is ready for the NHL.

I like Connor Geekie, Matthew Savoie, and Ivan Miroshnichenko too (and more) - this is a strong draft (at the top at least). Wright is off to a slow start this year which will temper some enthusiasm about his ceiling - at one point he was sort of slotted between Matthews and McDavid, but I think unless he really pours it on he will wind up around Lafreniere level.

As far as I know (and I'm not an expert) you won't see overage North Americans drafted unless you mean 19. You are no longer eligible for the draft if you will turn 20 before 12/31 of the draft year.
Euros can be drafted older - and you could see more older European players drafted I guess.

Jay I wouldn't panic just yet. It was one bad game and the Caps always kick our ass not to mention we had our 3rd string goalie in net. We'll miss Jack but hopefully he's back before too long. Ty Smith returns tonight and it sounds like your boy Dawes is getting the start in goal. Mac should be back soon. I love Sharengovich but no problem with Ruff trying to light a fire under his ass. I know it's only 3 games but he's been pretty invisible so far. With Jack out the Devs need those young guys like Bratt, Nico and Sharengovich to step up and score.
I think Mike Sullivan has to be the coach I'd pick if I'm starting a team and can pick anyone, even over Trotz.

Yeah I've learned never to count out the Caps or Pens. I think they'll win forever. Devil's beat the Sabres in OT. Zacha with a nasty writer to win it. Nico Daws was superb in net, kept the Devs in it the first 30 minutes when they were severely out played. Sabres actually look very interesting. Tons of speed. If Tokarski keeps playing well in net they will not be an easy team to face night in night out.
anyway, a hat trick from Matthew Perreault - I couldn't stand him his whole career because he always played well vs MTL.
not a bad 4th liner. If only the top 2 lines could score.

Yeah I was really impressed by his lack of unnecessary movement. Young goalies often are sliding all over the place. He looked calm and collected. I definitely would start him till Bernier or Blackwood is back. Thankfully Mac is getting vaccinated.
I almost spoke too soon. SJS came storming back, emptied the net down 4 - 3 and had some chances. Bruins held on, unfortunately.
Yea Daws looked like a 20 year old rookie in the first but thank goodness Blackwood and Bernier returned to practice. Hopefully we get at least one of them back soon so we no longer have to see Wedgewood in net for the Devils. As you mentioned the Devils have no margin for error with Hughes out. For them to have any chance they need the goaltending to play great and the defense needs to step up.

After Aldrich was politely allowed to resign from the Blackhawks he went to three different education institutions where he ultimately did this again, this time to a child.

PJ this whole thing is so infuriating. To me this is the worst situation of this nature I've ever seen. This wasn't some small cabal of organizational leadership that was covering it up. Literally the whole fucking organization knew down to the players who made it even worse for the poor kid by showering him with homophobic slurs during practice. Fucking Toews the "captain". Piece of shit needs to be stripped of that C yesterday. I mean were the ushers and hot dog vendors in on it too? PJ you are a 1000% correct. Unless the leadership that enabled and welcomed this predator to attack again and again go to jail there will be no deterrent.
Quenneville should be fired and banned for life from hockey.
Cheveldayoff should be fired and banned for life from hockey.
And more Blackhawks officials - they knew and let him (Aldrich) take the Stanley Cup to a high school and be around kids and they swept it under the rug.
the players who knew (which is most if not all) and belittled Beach because of it should be suspended for a long, long time.
Normally I'm not in favor of punishing people for things from so long ago, but holy shit this is so far beyond acceptable behavior no punishment for the authority figures who knew and made a conscious decision to ignore it or worse put it back on Beach all deserve to rot in hell - a long, slow, painful death. And that would be too kind.
100%.
I am honestly befuddled at the whole thing. Okay, you don't release it during the playoffs... but why not late June? July? August? There is an incredible selfishness to not releasing it immediately. But I can see how people behave that way. I do not understand hiding it for months, though.
You see the Joe Paterno scandal a year later and don't cleanse your organization of this?
link - ( New Window )
this link is pretty good, I suggest if you can get it the interview that Beach (the victim) did with TSN's Rick Westhead. It was hard to watch, but I feel like everyone in sports owes it to Beach to watch it.
I never experienced anything on this scale or really anything close thank god, but my daughters program had charges of sexual harassment levied by a former player against the owner of the program.
Safe sport was completely useless for the victim and the parents of current players and the program only told us it was charges of verbal abuse because he used profanity. I was a coach and I sat in a room and the Program Director said verbatim "it is really just a scorned player lodging a trumped up charge, but we need to take it seriously. It won't be long before he clears his name"
A mother on my daughters team found out what was actually going on only because she knew a friend of a friend...and saw the sexually explicit text messages the owner of the program sent to the victim (and underage kid).
That program director knew the whole time. She is still in her role.
So, the only tiny relatable thing I can share is how do they leave the program owner in his role and allow him around children (or adults) and not at least warn anyone?
Luckily for us that was as bad as it got and he was forced to sell the program (though somehow the director still has her job), but I can easily see how it could have been way worse.
The whole system needs to be burned down. Mass Hockey, USA hockey, and safe sport (especially safe sport).

After Aldrich was politely allowed to resign from the Blackhawks he went to three different education institutions where he ultimately did this again, this time to a child.

The more facts I read the more disgusted I get. How the fuck could they allow this POS to quietly resign? You don't need to be a parent to realize what a disgusting monster he is.

Joel Quenneville has resigned as coach of the Florida Panthers, the team said.
Not sure why re-entry to the league is even discussed in here.
I know above I said he should be banned for life and maybe he should, but this is not the time IMO to handle such conditions.
The NHL couldn't have handled this worse if they were being paid to do so.
Real soft Bettman.
The NHL couldn't have handled this worse if they were being paid to do so.
Fuck Bettman, he should receive significant heat for how poorly he handled this. Of course I’m not the least bit surprised.
Huh? I guess he's gonna miss most if not all the rest of the regular season so they can pull a Tampa and stash him on LTIR. Otherwise I don't see how they could do it cap wise.

I think they have to have Eichel fit on the roster first before going LTIR, and they have 6.5M in space right now due to LTIR.
So my guess is they send someone back to BUF like Dadonov or McNabb (in addition to whatever they trade to make the deal work) to make the salary difference or LVG offers better players/pics and gets salary relief. It's really just 3.5M in salary for one year they need to clear.

Gotcha. Very interesting. They are one team that can afford the patience to let him sit out and if they get him back come playoff time that would make them real tough.

The roller coaster that is the the Jack Eichel saga continues to twist and turn. Trade talks heated up and cooled this week. Seems like talks have reheated today. Stay tuned.
Yes we saw again tonight how important goaltending is. After a great game by Bernier last night Wedgewood turns in another mediocre performance and gives up a lead late in the 3rd period only to lose in a shootout to Columbus.
It's time to demote Gauthier and replace him with Boqvist or even Talvitie. With Wood due back soon I doubt they promote Holtz even though he is tearing up the AHL. I hope this was the last time we see Wedgewood play in the NHL for the Devils.
Quote:
Goaltending is such a difference maker. Once Pitt tied it in the 3rd, they sent the Kitchen sink at the Devs for a good 8 minutes or so including 2 pp's and Bernier stood in his head. Not in love with the penalty shot call given to Bratt but I'll definitely take it. With Jack out 5 or 6 more weeks we need every point. Blackwood should make his debut any day now maybe as soon as today.

Yep I was there Jay was saying the same thing to my brother. No way that 3rd period goal can go in. I agree that 4th line has been useless. Up close you really see the difference legit top pairing Dmen like Graves and Hamilton can make. Their size and skill dwarfs the garbage we've been running out there on the back line. Dougie had a goal and 10 shots. Bratt needs to finish. He has too much speed and skill to be held off the score sheet against a mediocre team like Columbus

There is a lot wrong with the Devils right now but it’s not who you would expect. Sharangovich, Bratt, and Ty Smith have not been good so far. Ty Smith cost them the game last night and he clearly needed time in the AHL since he missed all of camp and has only played 4 games. Hischier only has 3 points but he is playing very well and it seems like he should score two goals most nights but just isn’t finishing.
You’re right Hamilton has been worth the money so far. After a slow start him and Graves have been great together. Since we received news that Hughes will be re-evaluated in 5 weeks the Devils need to make changes to stay in it.
It’s time to promote Holtz. They need a sniper to put with Nico and after seeing Mercer thrive in a top 6 role I am confident that Holtz can hold his own too.

I think that Sharangovich will turn it around as I believe last season was not a fluke. He clearly misses Hughes but I would like to see him get more time with Nico until Hughes returns.
I loved the Mercer pick when it was made and he has been as good as advertised so far. A 19 year old playing top six minutes in the middle and producing is very impressive. This kid is solid in all situations and he is becoming a key long term piece. Johnsson is having a great start but Mercer is a big reason why. The Johnsson Mercer Bratt line has been one of the few bright spots so far.

That’s great news. This should provide a boost to the roster but they’re still not a good team with the injuries.
In other habs news, Cole Caufield was sent to down to the AHL. I don't mind that other than he was playing 1st line mostly and PP1 in the NHL, so it's not like he wasn't playing. Just not scoring.

Multiple sources tell ESPN it’s down to Calgary and Vegas. Sabres GM Kevyn Adams is working hard to get it done, but neither team has met his asks yet.
Sources say both teams are OK with Eichel getting his preferred surgery.

Still have jobs is a complete mystery to me. We have had by far the worst specials in hockey for a season plus now. It's a complete embarrassment. We took 2 too many men on the ice penalties within 5 minutes last night. That is a new level of ineptitude.

I often wonder who to blame for too many men. Is it the coach or the players? Sometimes you just don't know.

Well said, I was expecting Recchi to be let go after last season. As you said the Devils will hit rock bottom if Hamilton is out for an extended period of time. Hopefully they fire the entire coaching staff at seasons end.

CAL denied it almost immediately.
If they don't make any Skinner-like gaffes they can remake the whole complexion of their team.
Two of the 1sts are going to be late 1st (FLA and LVG), but still 3 1sts.
Little disappointed NYR didn't get it done.
Little disappointed NYR didn't get it done.
No, if they threw in Schneider or Lundqvist with or maybe even instead of Strome maybe a stronger offer (since Tuch's health is a question).
I think once Zib was extended the Rangers had little shot at Eichel without including someone like Trouba or Kreider in the trade. And I know he's the current whipping boy, but Trouba is very valuable.
Little disappointed NYR didn't get it done.
Krebs is much better than headcase Kravtsov. Strome I think benefits from the talent around him that he won't have in Buffalo. In addition, I think Buffalo wanted the more physical play of Tuch.
Doesn't seem absurdly cheap relative to expectations.
I think the key is that Tkachuk is an RFA and no way BUF takes the risk that Tkachuk would not sign and they'd want a window to negotiate an extension.
if you're Tkachuk not sure you want to go to BUF long term.

Holtz vs Raymond is one of those debates hockey nerds would have for hours. In the end not much separated them (in draft terms) Raymond went #4 and Holtz #7.
I admit I was torn. I love Holtz shot. Not many players at any level can wire it like he can. The sniper is becoming more and more rare in hockey so if he proves his shot is still elite at this level he will have a long and prosperous career.
I thought Raymond was more well rounded and off the charts from a play maker standpoint. He looked great a couple nights ago vs the Habs though didn't convert to the stat sheet. Which is sort of the issue with players like Raymond (who does have a hatty this year) is when they don't score, a lot of the good they do is lost on some fans.
Looking forward to seeing Holtz.
Hallelujah! He had a real good pre season, very excited to see if that translates to the regular season.
Thank you Arizona! Now Daws and Schmid can split time in Utica.

The defensive breakdowns on the goals were horrific. Severson played like he bet on the Kings. Even Graves coughed up a clear with 5 seconds left in the 2nd. Zacha and Bratt were the bright spots on offense. Zacha is going next level with goals in big spots this year. Blackwood looked sharp in his debut except for the 2nd goal which he should have had. Agreed on the playing time. Sharengovich is obviously in Le chateau bow wow. We need his scoring especially without Jack. He needs to be a top 6 fwd.
never a fan of Ruff in any capacity. I did think it was funny when rangers fans used to blame Ruff for the defense deficiencies last year when they were running out guys like Brendan Smith, Marc Staal, and young guys like Miller. Like it was Ruff's defense "scheme" that was the cause of the defensive woes.
14 points in his first 13 games.
And he's still 19.
Playing 3rd line minutes (but plenty of PP time), but just 4 of his 14 points came on the power play.
he's had some puck luck, but he's shooting 15.8%, so high but not ridiculously so.

That kid is a stud. I was a fan of his in the draft but I knew that he wouldn't fall to the Devils.
I am not a fan at all but you are right the Devils do miss his speed especially when they were forced to play Gauthier and Studenic in his place.
Now both of those players were sent to the AHL and hopefully Gauthier never plays for the Devils again. I look forward to seeing who they promote. I'm hoping for Jesper Boqvist and Tyce Thompson.
Some good news for the Devils it sounds like Dougie Hamilton will be back for tomorrow's game. I just wish that they could trade Subban and give his roster spot to Colton White who has played better than I expected. Ty Smith played his best game of the season next to White and it's obvious that he isn't a good fit next to Severson. Smith needs to be paired with a defensive defenseman. The Devils have several options there in the AHL.
Quote:
He's someone that low key we really miss. I know you're not a huge fan Jay but we really miss his speed and size in front of the net. We don't have someone to fill that roll screening in front. Also we could really use his scoring. We really struggle to score goals. Dougie practiced today and sounds like good chance he's back tomorrow.

Jay I'd love to see them give Bahl a shot, but you're right White has been solid. Such a noticable difference with the goaltending now. We don't sniff even a point Saturday without Bernier.
He's on pace for what? 75 goals at 36?
If he gets that or close he'll be around 800 going in to his 37 year old season.
He will break 894 before he hits 40.
And not much different gp than Gretzky.
But now that I'm less immature I have to allow that Ovi is a better goal scorer even if he doesn't surpass Gretzky.
The era we're in now with the bigger goalie equipment, different rules, a more global game, and in general a higher talent level, what Ovi is doing is scoring at the most impressive pace ever. IMO.
Of course Gretzky is still the GOAT and as impressive as Gretzky's 894 goals is, his 1963 assists is even more impressive. For comparison sake, Ovi has 600 assists as of today.
I agree about Ovechkin being the best goal scorer. Defense has gotten much better since the 90s as well. Coaching's suffocated a lot of offense out of the game and tightened it up.
Incredible stat I saw on Twitter: Pavel Bure had 59 goals with the Panthers in 2000-2001. The next leading point getter had 37 points.
IMO if the early 80's Oilers team played in Toronto, or any city where money wasn't an issue, I think they would have won 10 Cups maybe more. Messier is arguably a top 10 player of all time and he was the 2nd line center. Paul Coffey is very underrated, talk about an elite skater he made plays like the Miller goal last night every night. There were about a half dozen other all star players on those Gretzky/Messier teams.
Gordie's prime was before my time. The best goal scorer I ever saw before Ovechkin was Mike Bossy.
It's funny what happens when you remove two dead weights in Gauthier and Studenic from the roster and replace them with more talented players in Boqvist and Thompson.
I wanted Seattle to select Johnsson in the expansion draft but I am thrilled that they didn't. I was clearly wrong as he has looked like a completely different player.
Why did Knight start both games?
Thanks.
You're right obviously. Blackwood let a couple of weaker shots in last night but then he stepped up and finished the game strong. Blackwood and Bernier are exactly what the Devils were hoping so far. Also have you seen Utica? They are 7-0 with Nico Daws and Akira Schmid playing outstanding. I am so glad that Wedgewood is gone so these two prospects can split time in the AHL. This experience will hopefully benefit them where one of these two will replace Bernier as the backup after his contract expires.
But Bobrovsky/Knight's start is a good example why it's hard to project when a player will be ready.
Knight has allowed 15 goals his last 3 games. Many he had no chance to save, but he has not looked as good as he did while serving as Bob's backup.

Unless Bobrovsky plays like this for several years this contract will be terrible. The move was criticized by most and that was before they took Knight high in the first round. They would have been better off long term had they signed a cheaper stop gap to serve as the starter until Knight was ready.
Interesting on the telecast they mentioned how they asked Jon Cooper if his Lightening don't repeat who was his favorite to won the cup and he said Florida. I can see it. They are as fast and explosive as any team in the league. Also after 3 Devs games in a week on ESPN + exclusively, I can say this- it's brutal. That ice level view they go to sans announcers for like a minute at time generally sucks. It dramatically reduces the view especially because you can't see half the net! The game announcers are comically bad. The studio guys are ok but last night they had 4 of them at once. What's the point of shelling out for a guy like Torts if you're barely gonna let him speak? NBC had a light years better production.

I was glad to see Ryan Poehling finally play in Mtr last night, albeit 8 minutes. I still think he will be a player for your boys.
I misspoke earlier in the thread, it was reported that Carey Price was seeking mental health treatment not substance abuse, that was not that case. Not that it matters.
"Over the last few years I have let myself get to a very dark place and I didn't have the tools to cope with that struggle.
"Last month I made the decision to enter a residential treatment facility for substance use. Things had reached a point that I realized I needed to prioritize my health for both myself and for my family. Asking for help when you need it is what we encourage our kids to do. And it was what I needed to do.
"I am working through years of neglecting my own mental health which will take some time to repair; all I can do is take it day by day. With that comes some uncertainty with when I will return to play.
"I appreciate all of the overwhelming support and well wishes. I please ask that the media and our hockey community continue to respect our privacy at this time. Your support and respect of this so far has been a critical piece to my recovery."

Just absolutely incredible performances from those two. It’s funny looking back at some who criticized Edmonton for giving big money to Draisaitl after they paid McDavid.
Next three Sens games postponed.
I understand the NHL considers game postponements a factor in their Olympic participation opt out.
Hate to say it, but I'd rather watch a fully-staffed Olympics than the NHL regular season.
