just thought I'd start an NHL discussion thread - non-Rangers specific, but people can discuss any team (including the Rangers).
A lot of things to discuss:
1. Eichel activity picking up (LAK, NYR and LVG the rumored landing spots) I read yesterday it's beyond medicals at this point and the teams involved have seen them and are comfortable they have a treatment plan.
2. Two week pause in February for Olympics
3. Rule changes: not much, mainly just stricter enforcement of cross checking. Not sure how it will manifest, but my guess is two places - along the boards and in front of the net where cross checking has become almost an accepted method of play will become a penalty - early in the season expect a lot of those calls
4. Obviously COVID protocols, and cross border. The NHL has a lot of protocols for unvaccinated and fines or suspensions for missing those protocols, I'm not clear on all of them yet, but I do know in Canada if you are not vaccinated you cannot leave the team hotel for anything except team activities. Not sure if that's true in the US too.
Predictions? Expectations?
IDK, I think it'd be pretty awkward to strip ZIbanejad of the C just to put it on Laf or Fox.

He should be the captain now. You can always adjust.

it depends how they determine captain.
Sharks reassigned captain from Thornton to Pavelski - Thornton took the A after that.
And even before that went from Marleau to Rob Blake.
Marleau wore an A for almost a decade after that.
EDM "took" captain away from Ference before making McDavid captain.
I don't think it's what you think.
I'm in a league with my hockey teammates. not auction, it's snake draft. I always think my team is awesome but usually finish middle of the pack.

without seeing other teams I know it's hard to evaluate, but I feel like that team should be good in 6x4 scoring (6 player categories and 4 goalie categories)

The Canadiens have agreed to terms on an eight-year, $63 million contract extension (2022-22 to 2029-30) with forward Nick Suzuki.

Hearing NYR have given Vitali Kravtsov permission to contact other clubs in seek of a trade. Kravtsov did not make the Opening Day roster.
it's why hockey is harder than football at drafting. these kids are 17/18 when you draft them. Hard to project intangibles (or even tangibles in some cases) and often it's the small things that make the difference between AHL/NHL.
Glad we traded Buchnevich to make room for Kravtsov.
that leaves ARI, CAL, BUF, OTT, and NYR with no captain.
Not a group I'd like to be part of and it's not just a formality IMO. - also though not making it into a huge issue, but I'd have a captain.
The six teams without a captain are the Arizona Coyotes, Buffalo Sabres, Calgary Flames, Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers, and Ottawa Senators

And did my first hockey auction ever last night it was fun. $200 cap and Connor Mac went for 82!

Yeah that's a solid team. Pasta could have a huge year, Point is solid and Carlson is always underated. He goes behind Fox, Makar but him and Hamilton are about as reliable as it gets from the back line. I like your goaltending too.nKnight is a real breakout candidate, anyone who plays net for the Isles puts up great #'s and Varlomov seems to have a mysterious injury. You can't go wrong with Samsonov I always like solid if not spectacular goalies on good teams. I'm like you PJ I always like my team out of the draft, but always seem to struggle. It's by far my worst fantasy sport.

People trying to pin this on Kravtsov. When you sign a KHL phenom to an entry-level contract *that includes a European Reassignment Clause* and then play games on Year 3 of that ELC? These are the prizes you win.
What made Shesterkin’s AHL stint so gracious was it *wasn’t* SOP.

His AHL salary is ~$400/day
His NHL salary is between $4600 - $9200 per day (depending on performance bonuses)
Factor in whatever salary he could be getting in the KHL, but chose not to
You can call him a crybaby but all this to *maybe* preserve Libor Hajek? Can you blame him?
Kravtsov was the #9 overall pick in the draft and is in year 3 of his ELC.
The Rangers should be putting him either in a position to succeed or pumping up his value to trade him.
Neither of those is accomplished in the AHL.
This blurb from EP I think nails Kravtsov and it's probably what drives coaches crazy. Sort of Malkin syndrome (though not comparing the two really) where the player has so much skill but seems to only give max effort when they want to.

It’s sounds like the @NHL
is leaning towards suspending @SanJoseSharks
Kane under supplementary discipline ( 18- 18A of the CBA. After serving his set amount of games it’s likely he’ll be clear to resume his career. @FAN590

I'm all for due process and divoces get messy so be careful to listen to one side's accusations. However there seems to be a whole lot of smoke around Kane for there to be no fire at all.
yep definately the gambling is the big problem. If you saw his interview with Linda Cohn, it was pretty much a non-denial denial. Sounded very Pete Rose-ish. "Yes I have a big gambling problem but I never ever bet on hockey!"
Yes, not sure what the league would do about that though, it's almost like using a fake ID.

oh ok. just hard to keep straight what he is in trouble for at any time

Hey, for all I know a fake vaccine card gets him the NHL death penalty, who knows, seems minor to me in terms of NHL discipline, but nothing would surprise me.

100%, I don't blame him. This is the second high draft pick to ask out. It's on NYR.
Yeah they were a great team

Heaviest Opening Night NHL rosters
Rangers 203.4 pounds
Ducks 203.1
Flames 202.7
Islanders 202.6
Golden Knights 202.0
What did you guys think about the feature they did at the opening on the guy that composed the ESPN hockey theme? Overall I liked it if you can get past the douche chills of Justin Bieber narrating it. A few things though:
1. A little long. 6 minutes for an opening? Come on
2. The line about that theme not being heard on ESPN since hockey left the network is total BS. Every time they've done a hockey segment the past 15 or 20 years they've played it.
I was very disappointed about this at first because he looked great with Hughes and Sharangovich but the kid is only 19 and the Devils have rushed too many young players up too soon lately. It's probably better to let him spend time in Utica on the top line for more seasoning. It's no surprise that Mercer made the team but I just hope that they use him at center and move Zacha back to wing where he thrived.

National Hockey Night theme is a big plus. Wish they brought back Gary Thorne and Bill Clement too
Yeah they were a great team
It would be even better if they could bring Doc Emrick out of retirement.

Hearing NASH gets a key piece of business done. Mattias Ekholm re-signing at 4 years, $6.25M AAV (not $6.35)

I think he played well enough to make the team but they want him getting top 6 and PP time down there being as he's only 19. I'm mixed on it. While I agree with Ruff's premise, the fact is the AHL is not a great developmental league for top prospects and frankly if he out played other players in camp he should be on the roster to start for at least a little bit to see if he can handle the speed of regular season NHL.

I know Ruff intimated on multiple occasions in camp that Zacha was a C for now, but that he'd love for other options. I agree hopefully he puts Mercer there. Zacha played the best hockey of his career at wing last season.

I understood it at the beginning of camp but with Mercer performing as I expected I think that he should be the 3rd line center with McLeod as the 4th. This is how I arrange the lines.
Tatar Hughes Sharangovich
Zacha Hischier Bratt
Kuokkanen Mercer Johnsson
Wood McLeod Vesey
Smith Hamilton
Graves Severson
Siegenthaler Subban
I agree, Kuokkanen was very good last season when he played with Hughes and Sharangovich but that was mostly a product of Hughes and Sharangovich. Kuokkanen is a 3rd line player on a playoff team. I would much rather see a better play like Tatar on the first line.
