Dan Duggan ✔ @DDuggan21
One more note on this, as I mentioned in my chat yesterday (https://theathletic.com/2870349/2021/10/05/live-qa-giants-reporter-dan-duggan-looks-ahead-to-week-5-matchup-with-cowboys/?source=emp_shared_article …), the Giants added a void year as part of the restructure. That allowed them to create an extra $700K of cap savings this year while adding a $1.3M dead money charge in 2023
And then some salary cap/CBA fun: Bradberry’s salary in 2023 is on the books at $30M. That’s a dummy year and the contract voids after the 2022 season. But the huge salary is needed due to rules regarding the size of restructures.
Long story short: The sides did this restructure with an extension after this season a strong possibility. With Bradberry’s 2022 cap hit now $21.9M, the Giants will be motivated to do an extension to lower that cap hit.
Without it, CB once again becomes a need in the draft.
I do wonder how this effects the use of the Franchise Tag?

Looks like it will prevent them from using the Tag. So extension before the start of next season or good bye!.....
....The first notable detail about Aaron Rodgers‘ new contract is the 2023 void year referenced in the intro. The void year is critical. It prevents him from being franchise-tagged by the Green Bay Packers.
- Because he'll go into the final year, and there are no bonuses or guarantees that will accelerate, the Giants are just borrowing money in his name so to speak. Meaning, the cap hit number isn't that important. The bonus money is spent, and nothing can be done.
- What is important is the 13.5M in salary that is not guaranteed (2M will guarantee at the beginning of the season)
- Going into next year, it's a matter of how much of the 13.5M will the Giants need, and what will they be willing to give Bradberry in exchange
- They cannot franchise him (even without this void year, the multiplier on his 2022 comp makes franchising prohibitive)
I've said this a number of times, team Bradberry is smart and will only extend him when they have max leverage. They might have that now.
Need to hope they are fortunate enough that money pushed forward doesn't turn dead on somebody that wears out his welcome.
Yup it’s noticeable he’s been a step slow on several plays so far. Plays he was in position to break up the pass last season
