Overlooked defensive play that saved the NO game...

Dan in the Springs : 10/8/2021 9:45 am
Of course we all were happy with Bradberry's pick that finally stopped the NO offense in the second half. This was a defensive play that gave us the chance to come back. At that point, it was 14-10 and in the words of Sy'56, "NO was running the ball down the throats of NYG". The interception was critical in keeping the score close, especially since on the next drive NO went down and scored again. Without the INT, we most certainly lose the game.

But the overlooked play was actually right before the INT, for a number of reasons. On this play NO completed a 46 yard TD which would have put them up by 11 and continued their momentum. On this play Leonard Williams drew the holding call. Watching this play closely it appears to me that he did a good job of drawing the hold (especially for a guy his size) in trying to turn the corner as if he were Von Miller. Without the hold he probably gets a hit on Winston but not a sack and the play outcome is likely the same. Had he straightened to fight off the hold he doesn't go to the ground and probably doesn't draw the penalty.

By keeping his legs going and allowing the defender to bring him down right in front of the ref he gets the penalty. Not only did this play take points directly off the board, but the ensuing play was 1st and 20, which likely kept NO from continuing to run the ball on us, got Winston to try to force the deep completion, and resulted in the interception.

An underrated play by a savvy vet. Thoughts?
It's true

The play goes under the radar because as a fan you are mad at how someone can be so open. Williams has been playing well especially last game. He does not seem to be a make the money and chill kinda guy.
Another game saving play

was that the ball didn't roll out of the endzone on the Ross fumble. It would have been a touchback, loss of possession and no points.

Also Rudolph covering up Saquon's fumble.
Williams

Looks to be playing at a very high level again. We tend to focus on sack totals, he is impacting the game without the numbers so far this year.

I’m disappointed in Carter’s play He looks like he has a magnet on his chest that draws him into the offensive lineman’s magnet on his chest. Someone besides Ojulari needs to help pressure the QB; if we get that, watch Williams sack totals go up.

Williams is just a very good player. Glad he’s on the team.
leonard williams 4th down tackle was also huge

the sacks last year may have been an illusion but a lot of them were coverage sacks anyway. he makes an impact every down. not a superstar but a very solid player.
Williams also...

... created the pressure that made Winston throw the ball away at 3rd and 14 (or 2nd and 14 - now I can't recall), allowing us to get the ball back at the end of regulation. That was a gigantic play.
Not that I expect him to be the savior

But I'd like to see more of Carter Coughlin. I think he has speed and savvy in the pass rush and attacking the line of scrimmage. He has the ability to be disruptive.
Anyone still complaining about the 3rd round pick

that would have probably been a bust anyway?

Which one? There's two.
the 2020 3rd would have likely been Zack Baun or Matt Hennessy
Eric on Li : 10/8/2021 11:29 am : link
Baun you might remember was the 2020 version of Ojulari - big pass rush production, was thought to be a late first, supposedly someone we were high on and then fell for unknown reasons rumored to be injuries. Asshats said he was in consideration with mckinney to be the 2nd round pick. Thus far in his career he has 0 sacks and just 1 TFL.

Hennessy is a C who has started 6 games in 2 years for ATL, including all 4 this year. I believe he is yet to distinguish himself. PFF has him 15th out of 33 centers so not bad.

The actual picks taken by the Jets were Ashtyn Davis who started 6 games last year but got hurt and has yet to play much this year and a CB named Michael Carter who has played pretty good so far as their nickel.

all in all nothing close to the consistent solid performance Williams has put up over his career so really just a question of production per $.

There is a dilemma. If you read BBI, you know it has to be a bad trade because it was made by Gettleman. But OTOH, reading the same BBI, you know both those draft picks would have been worthless busts.
Dan - good call here. That was a very strong rush by Williams

saving our asses on that TD pass. Big Leonard needs to come up big this week against an even better OL.

Also there are a ton of reasons/plays that can be mentioned that affect that outcome of a game. That delay of game penalty on New Orleans putting them too far behind in down/distance late in the 4th qtr was huge as well. Giants got the ball back to tie it up.

Good point about the penalty; it was huge. Loved the look of frustration on Winston's face. Thanks coach Payton!
