MY biggest disappointments so far

Grizz99 : 10/8/2021 12:51 pm
The record in a year when I thought The Giants would dominate
2. Xaviar McKinney... It was all there, the pedigree (high no.2 pick), the tease from last year. But he hasn't been good and I'm more puzzled than disappointed.
3. Gates and Martinez....not in performances but with the early season ending injuries. Tough to lose the leaders on both side of the ball...
4. Danny Shelton I saw a Bobby Skinner analysis and walked away convinced that we had a replacement equal to or better than the lost Tomlinson. Martinez's raves contributed to my sense of well being....and I dared dream..."Wow, 340 plus joins 340 (D.Lawrence) and Williams is the small guy." Thought we really had something. We do, an out of shape blob, and if McKinney can grow, this guy is grown. Shouldn't be but it is...
5. Daniel JOnes....not in his performance but in the lack of regard for same. Rookie year: missed two games and the preseason and breaks records, displays an almost uncanny accuracy throwing to journey men receivers and the boo birds ominate. Second year and he leads the league in passes over 20 yards and still the majority don't get it.
We have a premium and maybe even great QB in his prime. He's complete, runs well, accurate strong arm, great attitude and work effort. Holy Holy InComeFree...come out and smell the roses...
Wondering who you have down for disappointments...betting there'd be a lot of votes for Judge and the fourth down punts ....
We all

need to take a breath on Xaviar McKinney. This is literally still his rookie season. Have we learned nothing letting young players learn and grow? Every one wants a fucking insta playa right out the gate and it does not work like that just because you, Skinner and everyone else wishes on it.
Starting 0-2
DavidinBMNY : 10/8/2021 12:58 pm : link
Again. What does it take to win one game out of the first two? Seriously. 6 or 7 years in a row or something of 0-2.
mine is Judge
KDavies : 10/8/2021 1:12 pm : link
I think he coached passively at the end of the Skins game, and it cost them the game. Doesn't mean I've given up on him at all. Coaching was a lot better against the Saints, as they opened stuff up a bit more.
The D is the biggest disappointment
RCPhoenix : 10/8/2021 1:44 pm : link
Giving up:

1. Game winning drives two games in a row
2. TDs before the end of the first half in each game
Disagree re: McKinney
Grizz99 : 10/8/2021 1:44 pm : link
He flashed at year's end. Not unrealistic to expect continued growth in this the year of greatest growth.
We're seeing reversion.
I was careful to label this MY disappointments. I note that you're telling us how we should feel. Thank you, but that's a prerogative I'll hold onto for now.
It’s been the in game coaching

Coaching not to lose instead of coaching to win.
Look a little deeper if McKinney is what you came up with for
chick310 : 10/8/2021 1:59 pm : link
a disappointment. McKinney has 7 games started in his entire career.

That secondary is loaded with veteran guys who are being paid a lot more money and have started a lot more guys than McKinney. Bradberry, Jackson, Ryan and Peppers are not exactly putting their respective best foot forward so far.

Agree here. Rivera + Fangio beat him. And he beat himself against Atlanta. And got bailed out of a 10 point deficit vs. NO by his QB putting on a cape in part because of the non-timeout before halftime that cost them 20-30 seconds and at least a chance to kick a FG under 60 yards.

In terms of players I'd agree with most of the defense being disappointing so far. The secondary has more resource in it than any other group on the team and other than Bradberry's 2 INTs they have 1 turnovers in 4 games (Logan Ryan's FF vs. Denver). That's pretty bad, especially given the QB's they've faced.
in no particular order
Dr. D : 10/8/2021 2:28 pm : link
Defense not holding leads and often not getting stops when needed.

Leo Williams. Had a better game last week, but overall he's disappeared too much this year (does he miss Tomlinson or is his wallet too heavy?). I know sack stats aren't everything, but he's on pace to have half as many QB pressures and sacks as he had last year. There've been times when I had to pause the TV to see if he was playing. When I did he looked like he was slow dancing with an opposing OL.

Coaching. Bad decisions have played part of at least one loss. I hated it at the time when we didn't go for the throat after Bradberry's INT. Settling for a FG and giving the ball back with over 2 min and 3 TOs was a really bad decision. And we paid for it. Hope coach Judge learned from that.
Defense

The play calling on defense has been very disappointing
correction
Dr. D : 10/8/2021 2:32 pm : link
Leo Williams is on pace to have LESS than half as many sacks as last year. I know it's just 4 games and he's capable of getting multiple sacks in a game, but he's not getting it done often enough this year.
Coaching
John In CO : 10/8/2021 2:32 pm : link
Particularly on offense. Too many damn FG's and not enough TD's in games that are decided by less than a TD!!!

I felt pretty sure going in to this season that the Giants had their HC for a lot of years in Judge; now, not so sure. Play to win, not to not lose.
mckinnie playing single high safety
Platos : 10/8/2021 2:36 pm : link
kind of takes him out of the game. its normal. lets hope he makes big plays this week.

shelton i think will turn it around. i think he's a good team piece but austin johnson should get more reps based on talent. really our linebackers have to step up because its easy to say the DL isn't performing in the run game when your LBs are filling gaps.

+1.
IK our ER is still weak, but AO has made it better than last year. That said, when he , or Carter, vacates his lane responsibility , and they throw to the RB out of the backfield, it takes forever for an LB or DB to get to the receiver before he picks up first down. Play recognition by the back 7 is slow.
Well
Dukie Dimes : 10/8/2021 2:55 pm : link
The whole defense has been a massive disappointment. No one is making game altering plays except for the few made by JB and AO. And even those two have been feast or famine. For JB’s two big INTs, he has allowed countless long completions. Outside of AO’s three sacks, he has hardly produced any pressure. It’s not just about sacks. It’s about hurrying the QB and forcing him to make a bad decision. He gets a bit of slack because he is a rookie, but the pass rush as a whole has been an unmitigated disaster. Worst in the league.
I am still behind the coach JJ
mpinmaine : 10/8/2021 4:50 pm : link
he is that guy to turn this around
Nitpicking
Grizz99 : 10/8/2021 6:40 pm : link
But I'm going to add Dek Lawrence.
Good ballplayer, but I was looking for a breakout, impactful year.
Starting 0-3 is the biggest disappointment.
St. Jimmy : 10/8/2021 7:35 pm : link
Especially when they flat out blew the Football Team game.
Judge criticism over-the-top
giantstock : 10/8/2021 8:11 pm : link
Don't think Judge criticism is valid other than minimal.
--------------

Here are the 4. Three players and 1 coach.

1--- Dexter Lawrence. Definitely not close to being the worst or among the worst players. But I expected a lot more. I expected he'd be an impact player. Instead for a mid-1st round pick, he applies little pressure, not making a huge impact in stopping the run and was the biggest reason why Giants lost to Wash. Incredibly dumb.

2--- Carter/Ximines OLB combo. While I wasn't expecting a lot, so far we have gotten absolutely nothing from them. Nothing. I wasn't expecting they would be this awful of providing nothing.

3--- Barkley. I didn't realize he was os blind in finding holes. It would still be beneficial big time to get him a terrific OL but this OL is doing okay enough and yet he hasn't yet been much of an impact other than game 4. Injury notwithstanding, he should be able to understand holes much better.

4-- Defensive Coordinator- Patrick Graham. It's pretty sad when most of the talk is that the Giants "need to score" vs Dallas. I can't believe that he hasn't bene able to find a way through any defensive alignments and blitzes ot get a some type of pass rush. With the current players acquired from 2020 to 2021 and players returning, the pass rush is nothing more than "stuck in the mud" with little to no creativity vs some bad / mediocre teams thus far.

Judge for me.
Crispino : 10/9/2021 9:03 am : link
The one thing I felt he was sure to do was raise the level of preparedness and especially improving discipline. I’ve seen no evidence that he’s been successful in either area.
A lot of things
cosmicj : 10/9/2021 9:08 am : link
But I’ll highlight the weakening of the DL with letting Tomlinson walk. I was in favor of resigning him but was told he was fungible. I was hoping the Giants FO knew what it was doing with cheaper close-to-equivalent talent.

Wrong. The team’s 2020 strength is now a very average unit.

The incompetence of the Giants front office continues to produce results.

cosmicj : 10/9/2021 9:10 am : link
Agree about Barkley. He is an elite athlete but there are big deficiencies in his game. The criticism of the selection here has centered on positional value arguments but it appears DG’s scouting was inadequate.
This team regardless of the coach
Giant John : 10/9/2021 1:51 pm : link
Has made it a bad habit in that they are unprepared to play on a high level when the nfl season starts. How many yeast in the last 10 yeas has this team shit the bed at the start of the season? I expected it again this year and the Giants didn’t let me down unfortunately.
Sorry about the typing. I have to hire someone to do that.
Giant John : 10/9/2021 1:52 pm : link
But you get the point.
Patrick Graham for me.
Angel Eyes : 10/9/2021 2:06 pm : link
I didn't have high hopes for the pass rush this year, but the secondary has been a big letdown for me.

Regarding that, is this scheme? What's changed from last year?
Tomlinson 3x the player Shelton is....
bluewave : 10/9/2021 3:25 pm : link
Giant Insider podcast's Chris Bisignano was mentioning on the podcast how Shelton was getting blown off the line of scrimmage all game against the Saints.

They couldn't figure out how someone who is 340 lbs was getting moved so easily. I would take someone off a practice squad who is 6'3" or taller 315 lbs with greater physical strength over Shelton at this point. Our run defense has suffered greatly because of his play.
Peart
Ira : 10/9/2021 3:36 pm : link
I thought he'd be ready to start at right tackle. Solder won't be around for too much longer, so Peart will either have to step up or we'll have to find a new tackle to replace him.
May turn out to be correct
Bob in Newburgh : 10/9/2021 4:32 pm : link
But the early criticisms of Carter and Barkley are founded on a belief that players recovering from severe injuries not only can play, but play well immediately. There is plenty of history that this is a process that takes playing time.

Also way too early to label Tomlinson irreplaceable. He probably is not, but it is too early to compare this d-line to last year's late season d-line. And without Martinez, is any comparison of run stopping ability going to be valid? I do have hopes that Ragland will approach and equal Martinez's contribution as he integrates into the scheme. There is certainly np physical reason he cannot do this.

Carter wasn't that great before his injury.
