Daniel Jones and barrelling through head first

gidiefor : Mod : 10/11/2021 8:32 am
How long will this guy's career last doing that? I respect the tough guy thing, and it's one of the things I like about Daniel Jones, but that image of him getting clocked last night - will not leave my brain. I keep seeing it over and over again. I can't help but think there's got to be an element of self preservation in the QB plan, or that his career is going to be shortened for him.

it's a QB doing everything he can and more to keep his team in the game. I agree it's not what you want to see your QB doing but that's 100% on the coaches for putting him in that position.

This is correct. I blame the playcall 100%, not the player. Why go wide on a bootleg when you're that close? Just sneak the damn ball straight ahead

The player put his head down into a defender and got his bell rung. I think the player has something to do with it. Somehow Lamar, Brady, etc know how to avoid danger - not Danny Dimes.

He's fighting for his team and he doesn't want to settle for a FG. Are you seriously going to tell me Jackson, Goff, Mahomes, Allen, Wilson, Dak, etc have never dove headfirst for a TD with defenders in their way?

It's hilarious the mental gymnastics you guys that don't like Jones come up with

this is Monday morning QBing. Jones was trying his best to score in a fast moving live action game and there was a helmet to helmet. Football is a violent sport.

Another bone-headed Jones play and he got his bell rung this time. We are always making excuses for this guy. One day his name will be a trivia answer - nothing more.

Again, sure, the call was a head scratcher. How many times on Sunday do we see teams spread out the defense on the goal line? QB sneak? Or even just line up and hand the ball off to the RB2 which is of course exactly what worked.

But look, that play isn’t designed for Jones to roll out and then run through two defenders into the end zone. Dallas sniffed out the naked bootleg and when that happened Jones assignment is to throw the ball away. Or slide. But instead he tried to beat the defenders to the pylon and he didn’t make it. That’s a really poor decision by Jones which led to the worst possible outcome. Even handing the ball to a Cowboy and inviting him to run the ball 100 yards to the other end zone would have been a better decision and a better outcome. At least we’d still have our QB1 for another series of plays.

And by the way, there’s a reason Garrett doesn’t call for a pass down there and that reason is that he doesn’t trust Jones decision making.

Jones’ clock is off - that’s why the “poor pocket presence” (which often leads to his fumbles), his taking big hits just before he slides or just before he goes out of bounds(which has led to his injuries), the “burping the baby” and forcing plays to receivers that he sees are covered. It’s the same thing we’ve been worried about since reading his scouting reports from Duke.
WTF? How many fumbles has he had this season? How many Ints? One of the things he has been praised for this season is his pocket presence. Hell, he only has been sacked twice in 5 games with a makeshift line and no running game, so how do you arrive at this illogical opinion? And how do you come up with the absurd "Garrett doesn't trust Jones decision making" take? LOL

I love how you always move the goal posts. You stated that other QBs don't do what Jones did yesterday trying to score a TD. I then gave you a list of QBs and asked if they have ever went in for a TD headfirst with defenders in front of them. Instead of answering that and being honest that your post was a BS one trying to slam Jones, you come back with this nonsense.

Your act is a tired one

get hurt at some point. The ones that don't are actually just lucky when it comes down to it.

The NFL has put in a ton of rules to protect a QB but they can't stop what happened yesterday if that is what Jones is going to do. Run the ball better with your OL and RBs if you don't want your QB hurt.

The nonsense that goes on in the red zone with this team is becoming untenable.

Glad your laughing today Montana. Hey, how’s Jones production been in the red-zone this season? And sure, he hasn’t been fumbling or throwing picks, but he hasn’t been winning either. Your tuning in to watch a QB not fumble and not throw picks? You must be loving this season!

Me? Yeah, wtf do I see? Another lousy season. But hey, let’s not blame Jones for having the same problems he’s always had. Kid has spirit! He can make all the throws! Probably just needs a new O-co, some better linemen and a new TE and a better defense and new kicker and a new punter and a new equipment manager. Then he’s gonna be great!

Anyway, I’ll let you get back to your LOLs.

I know get on JG but it's also hard to blame him here, but that particular play call was probably better on 1st down.

LMAO (there's another one for you)...Holy shit, you can't even be honest with yourself.

That is all it is with you. You literally come on here and run to every single Jones thread with the single-minded attempt to trash him. It is virtually all you post on here. You run off into a thread here or there to make it look like that's not the case but everyone on this board knows it is. You even hijack other threads discussing some other aspect regarding the team by trying to direct the discussion to how bad you think Jones is.

You're either just a troll or someone who feels an unnatural desire to be proven right on football message board. Either way you need some serious help

If he's trolling then it's working because you keep replying

Aww...You switched dupes...How cute!

Lol ok bro. This is my only handle here, but keep tilting at those windmills.

A few thoughts
Matt M. : 10/11/2021 12:21 pm : link
1) I can't fault him for that play. He did everything he could to try to score. He made a similar effort last week for the 2 pt conversion. He is possibly our best player and trying to make plays.

2) That said, his leading with his head and shoulders is likely why no flag was thrown for helmet to helmet. Not that a flag would have made up for the injury.

3) That was a bad looking concussion. He is likely to miss significant time. And when he comes back, the threat of another concussion is likely to limit his running, at least by design. We saw how effective (or rather ineffective) he was last year when running was not an option. This has potentially long lasting effects on his season.

How would he do that?

His only other option was to try and cut back, which would have probably lost him yardage.

When you call that play on 3rd and 1 from the 1, you are expecting your QB to go balls out. Otherwise, don't call it.
Rewatching that play is painful
cosmicj : 10/11/2021 1:30 pm : link
Because of Jones after the play. Feel really bad for him.

But I’ll say it - it was a good call by Garrett. You have to expect the blocking to be say, at least bad rather than nonexistent, and then Jones would have reached the pylon uninjured. At some point, players like Rudolph and that other putz need to do their jobs minimally.

It makes me angry. I wonder if a coach like Parcells would just cut the backup OL putz today as a message.
what makes it worse
santacruzom : 10/11/2021 1:32 pm : link
is that they wound up punching it in the next play anyway, despite Jones actually losing some yardage in his attempt. That makes his decision to keep the ball instead of just throwing it away and moving onto the next down that much more painful.

By lowering his shoulder not his head? He also could have thrown it away since he was out of the pocket and was clear the odds of scoring were slim. He has to be smarter there.

Jones's speed in the open field is the best thing about his game. If he isn't going to be used as a runner then what is he?

I called for him to run more, and I'll say that as long as he's the starter. I also said to coach him on when to slide, when to get out of bounds, and how to avoid the contact he took yesterday. They clearly haven't.

Knowing their reactionary nature I'm guessing Jones's days a running threat are largely over.

As a big Lamar Jackson fan, surely you must see there is more to being a runner than straight line speed. The magic to Lamar's ground game is that he's got a ball carrier's awareness in that he knows where the contact is coming from and avoids taking shots. No one gets a clean hit on him. Robert Griffin and Wentz are examples of guys who have wheels but always somehow manage to get blasted every time they carry the ball.

With Jones it's not just awareness, it's also lateral agility and his frame. He looks OK in a read option running straight up the field on the take, but as someone mentioned above, he has the "elusiveness of a dump truck." He also doesn't have the size of a Cam Newton or Josh Allen where he can hold up physically to hits. Running him parallel to the line of scrimmage is not playing to his strengths at best and endangering his health at worst.

Running QBs usually go one of two ways in time: out of the NFL or they develop their pocket game so they don't need to run to be most effective. Lamar Jackson could be the exception because of his aforementioned elusiveness and awareness. Jones' path is the pocket game, which was looking much better this season. You can't teach what makes Lamar Jackson special as a runner.
Any word on Jones injury?
Batenhorst7 : 10/11/2021 2:18 pm : link
I hope he only slides or runs out of bounds in the future

I had the exact injury Barkley has and if he is back in 4 weeks or less its a miracle

His ligaments were obviously bleeding. they can drain it and tape him up but that could make it chronic

Completely agree that I wouldn't compare Jones to Jackson as a runner (or as a passer, but that's another matter).

As a runner though, Jones could be more like Mahomes or Wilson...guys who know how to slide and get out of bounds.

If the goal is to turn Jones into a pure pocket passer, that's never going to work.
Just watched a video assessment of Mike Glennon by Shawn Ohara
Batenhorst7 : 10/11/2021 3:54 pm : link
According to Ohara it seemed Glennon had terrific control and recognition

Glennon he said is noted for being a smooth operator and extremely accurate passer

we know what Danny Jones can do, and he does not seem as relaxed out there as Glennon

I doubt Jones plays this coming week. It will be interesting to see what Glennon can do with a full week of practice

Both are good QBs but if Glennon can pull off an upset we will have a QB competition for sure. Not an awful thing to have two good QBs

I would love to see Gettleman bring in another RB off someones practice squad also...not to mention some lineman

We are not rotating lineman on either side of the ball enough
and these guys are getting gassed

I noted this play earlier and even linked the video. Rudolph and Wes Martin (the G in on the play) should be forced to apologize to Jones for their incompetent efforts to block on the play. Completely embarrassing.

I would seriously consider cutting both today.
Yeah, bw
cosmicj : 10/11/2021 4:16 pm : link
it’s infuriating because you have one player committing his entire body to win (and get injured) and two others who don’t minimally do their jobs. Cutting both should be on the table although Rudolph will have an adverse cap impact.
Not sure if it was already mentioned
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 10/11/2021 4:21 pm : link
But a couple games ago against the Falcons, Jones literally ran over a DT on his way to a TD run. The ease with which he made that run was extremely impressive and I believe even Vilma commented on it. It was basically a prime Cam Newton type run.

I have a feeling that this run was something that Jones was naturally proud of, something that got his teammates hyped and give him compliments for. I could easily see that play have a role in Jones’ aggressiveness on the play yesterday and possibly the coaching staff’s decision making.

He’s not Cam Newton. Even Cam Newton got banged up so much that he doesn’t have an NFL arm anymore.

Jones and the coaches need to be selective with their play-calling. He has grown as a passer and he can still run but the team has to protect him more.
Rudolph and Martin did a crappy job and it's a shame
chick310 : 10/11/2021 4:21 pm : link
that Jones took a blow because of it.

But if the Giants went around cutting players every time they didn't display competent football, they would have a hard time suiting up enough guys to play each week.

I can see a Mahommes like number of rushes being the sweet spot, 3 - 4 a game tops. I agree that he doesn't need to be a statue back there, but he was on pace for substantially more rushes this season through 4.5 games (I think 100+).
