Daniel Jones and barrelling through head first

gidiefor : Mod : 10/11/2021 8:32 am
How long will this guy's career last doing that? I respect the tough guy thing, and it's one of the things I like about Daniel Jones, but that image of him getting clocked last night - will not leave my brain. I keep seeing it over and over again. I can't help but think there's got to be an element of self preservation in the QB plan, or that his career is going to be shortened for him.

Because of Jones after the play. Feel really bad for him.

But I’ll say it - it was a good call by Garrett. You have to expect the blocking to be say, at least bad rather than nonexistent, and then Jones would have reached the pylon uninjured. At some point, players like Rudolph and that other putz need to do their jobs minimally.

It makes me angry. I wonder if a coach like Parcells would just cut the backup OL putz today as a message.

I noted this play earlier and even linked the video. Rudolph and Wes Martin (the G in on the play) should be forced to apologize to Jones for their incompetent efforts to block on the play. Completely embarrassing.

I would seriously consider cutting both today.
Yeah, bw

it’s infuriating because you have one player committing his entire body to win (and get injured) and two others who don’t minimally do their jobs. Cutting both should be on the table although Rudolph will have an adverse cap impact.
Not sure if it was already mentioned

But a couple games ago against the Falcons, Jones literally ran over a DT on his way to a TD run. The ease with which he made that run was extremely impressive and I believe even Vilma commented on it. It was basically a prime Cam Newton type run.

I have a feeling that this run was something that Jones was naturally proud of, something that got his teammates hyped and give him compliments for. I could easily see that play have a role in Jones’ aggressiveness on the play yesterday and possibly the coaching staff’s decision making.

He’s not Cam Newton. Even Cam Newton got banged up so much that he doesn’t have an NFL arm anymore.

Jones and the coaches need to be selective with their play-calling. He has grown as a passer and he can still run but the team has to protect him more.
Rudolph and Martin did a crappy job and it's a shame

that Jones took a blow because of it.

But if the Giants went around cutting players every time they didn't display competent football, they would have a hard time suiting up enough guys to play each week.

Completely agree that I wouldn't compare Jones to Jackson as a runner (or as a passer, but that's another matter).

As a runner though, Jones could be more like Mahomes or Wilson...guys who know how to slide and get out of bounds.

If the goal is to turn Jones into a pure pocket passer, that's never going to work.

I can see a Mahommes like number of rushes being the sweet spot, 3 - 4 a game tops. I agree that he doesn't need to be a statue back there, but he was on pace for substantially more rushes this season through 4.5 games (I think 100+).
