NFL draft experts..question

DanMetroMan : 10/11/2021 1:15 pm
I'm not going to rehash drafting a new QB etc, my question is this... IF the Giants picked say 5th and 7th... what kind of bounty would they expect to see if they traded back out of both slots? I know it's hard to say because QB's being available change prices but what quality/quantity of picks could they expect in a normal year if they traded 2 top 10 picks? I know this team has talent but 5-6 picks landed for 2 "high" picks might be franchise-changing no?
What is killing the Giants is

no elite talent. ROI from their trio of top 6 picks just aren't delivering (yet or whatever excuse you wanna insert), it's made the roster very middle to low class heavy. Throw in their UFA prizes full of known warts, and it reinforces the net effect.

They need those two very high draft picks in 2022, and they need to nail them. Now, if the prospects don't match (similar to 2021 where Smith was snatched from them) then trade downs to net more resources is often a good thing. More chances to score. BUT, scouting and picking under DG is a very, very mixed bag at best.

I was thinking about this just this morning. Trade I always look at is Colts-Jets in 2018. Colts traded #3 to the Jets for #6, plus three 2nd rounders. That year, the Colts drafted Quenton Nelson in the first round and the combo of Darius Leonard and Braden Smith in the second round.
Colts had Andrew Luck

that's a big consideration with such a draft pick.

That said, I still don't see a QB worth the investment yet in the 2022 draft.

It would make sense to see NYG trade back. If they head into the 2022 draft with 2 selections in the top 10 overall, they could turn that into 6-7 picks in the top 50.

But all this is great in the Mock Draft world. They need to hit doubles, triples, and homers with these first rounders. They've hit singles and flied out a few times...for your baseball reference Dan.

As of now, I'm not sure I see a QB that a team will want to trade up for and that is usually when you can really get a ransom from a trade down. I have to see more of the kid from Liberty and there are some rumors on the Nevada kid, but I'm not there on either yet. Liberty is interesting, though, because of the direction the league is heading.

NYG needs a new decision maker draft weekend, and that is as simple as I can make it.

I like Malik Willis a LOT Sy. He just makes big time, winning plays. He reminds me a bit of Josh Allen when Allen was coming out of Wyoming. A little raw, but the plays they can make are unique to them alone.

Thanks Sy. With a roster like this, where you see clear bright spots but also clearly see the team is well behind the cream of the crop around the league, I look at the current mock drafts and (yes, it's so early and things change) but it does make you wonder how quickly things can turn around with the right person running the next draft. I guess I'm just jealous of the teams that have had 1-2 big drafts and suddenly turned around years of disappointment. It feels like the Giants have enough talent to do that "quickly" but has to be the right people in charge.

Things can turn around fast, absolutely.

The fastest way to do it is be on the rise in year 1 or 2 of a rookie contract. Jones will be entering year 4 next year and it is another bullet point under the argument against keeping him here.

More picks does not equal more success, however. They need to have a decision maker that will hit at least one homer and a double with their 2 first rounders next April.
they do not need to panic on QB
GiantsFan84 : 10/11/2021 3:53 pm : link
if jones isn't the long-term answer, and i don't think he is, he's a perfectly cheap and fine placeholder next year if they don't love this QB class

i haven't watched much CFB this year yet but coming out of last year willis was my favorite QB in this draft. i was never in on the hype for rattler or howell. and no thanks to the florida QB who will only have started 1 year and is more of a runner and not a thrower

the sad thing is you could make the case that this team needs everything (except for WR). QB, RB, TE, OL, DL, ILB, EDGE, CB, and S. the needs however aren't for depth (except for OL and DL), it's for impact players.

ryanmkeane : 10/11/2021 11:38 pm : link
I try to keep at least one of those top 10 picks in that scenario. Getting a blue chip OL or DL talent and then trading the second pick for let’s say, moving down in round 1 and a 2nd rounder or even a 2023 first while still getting a top 20 talent. Similar to the Toney trade.

I think with the way this roster is, getting as many picks as possible is a good thing, but you also might want to draft a top 10 pick and hope he becomes a staple. Team has so many needs.

Yes, at this point we still do not know what Jones is, even if he has looked good. The one thing he never did was lead a late comeback for a win. Well he just did that. He looks completely different.
But Jones turn for the big contract is coming before they are likely ready to compete at this point. Then again if there are no QBs worth a high 1st round pick, what good does it do to trade him without a viable replacement. Without a top 3 pick down the road, they won't be able to replace him with someone better. Crazy situation.

The Eagles might actually have 3 too ten picks next year.

Let that happy news sink in.

That's not necessarily true. The league is replete with QBs better than Jones who were taken out of the top 3, or even top 10.
