One Giants major problem is they have too many ST players

plato : 10/12/2021 11:36 pm
on roster and insufficient back up players with a position. I’ve seen this before in teams who do well n specials not so great in W/L column.

So yes some of the fault for the rotten play past two seasons is Judge who gives too much weight to ST ability and less to positional talent or at least awareness.
Couldn’t tell

Man, there’s no end in sight and it’s disheartening
Most overrated part of the game nowadays

People like to parrot it so they sound "smart" but yeah it's a waste of roster space
Special teams are important, but it seems as though the Giants are

taking it too far.

We got a horrible punter and the rest of special teams doesnt add much.
I understand the concern
Bill in UT : 10/13/2021 1:41 am : link
but we're talking maybe four to a half dozen guys, that if they were replaced with "position" guys, the position guys would be so far down the ladder that they would never see the field anyway
ironically the ST looked so much better under Shurmur
OdellBeckhamJr : 10/13/2021 1:49 am : link
than it did with Judge.

It never amounted to much obviously but they were great downing punts inside the 10 and not giving up big plays. Obviously Rosas was up/down and the return game was okay.

what really drives me up the wall besides the punter/kicker performance are the returners poorly judging the trajectory of the ball. so many yards left on the field by not taking the touchback.
And there’s still nothing special

About their special teams.
If you think changing the 47-53rd guys on the roster
WillieYoung : 10/13/2021 5:59 am : link
is going to make a difference in our won loss record, you can't be helped.

But in my next day thread this week the talk of "luxury items" got brought up in the comments. Some coaches and GM look at ST only players as luxury items, others as necessities. Judge is a ST coach by trade and NE always had their Matt Slater players that were there just for ST, so its obvious how our coaching staff views it.

I tend to think like you, I don't think Nate Ebner should have a roster spot if depth is an issue at another position.
The problem is not that bottom of the roster
Mike from Ohio : 10/13/2021 9:01 am : link
guys are more geared toward special teams, it's that when you have those guys, your special teams needs to be better. We have a coach who's background is special teams, and they made decisions to have guys like Nate Ebner on the roster. The problem is that our special teams are average at best.

NFL rosters are limited so you have to maximize the spots. The Giants are not doing that. Nate Ebner does not impact the game in any meaningful way, yet he has a roster spot. Our punter is well below average. Our return game is non-existent.

The problem isn't how you pick the bottom of the roster players, but how do they help you win games? For the Giants, those guys are mostly just warm blankets for the coach.
I agree with Mike

and other people, especially about the punter. He's horrible.
With the amount of injuries on this team
Giants73 : 10/13/2021 10:11 am : link
That is your 36-42 players on your roster. What is there 5 d linemen on this roster. You have a horrible defense designed to keep the other team on the field for 30 minutes at a time. Yet you do not have the players to keep your d line fresh. Good thing there are guys like Brown, Crossion, Jackson, Ebner, and I know I’m forgetting a few that have no value outside of special teams.
On top of that the special teams are nothing special. Saddest looking on-side kick. Haven’t seen any fakes. Not a lot of balls downed inside the 10.

I would say trying out Brown on passing downs as a SAM linebacker to cover tight ends judging from Sy's scouting reports and game reviews on him, but what do I know about player mismatches?
You think

This organization is so pathetic that it is not worth talking about them. I am happy to say I did not watch a live down this past Sunday and watched a 15 minute highlight video, and it's like an instant replay of the ladt 4 years, aside from the occasional win and the Dan's sickening over reaction. By BBI, Jones is a top 10 QB ready to burst onto the scene. The reality is he is a bust, and as I have stated many times, he is amongst the least of our issues, that is how pathetic we are.
Yes I thought this was strange going into the season
Breeze_94 : 10/14/2021 12:35 am : link
and it sticks out like a sore thumb when the starters get injured.

Brightwell made the team because of ST's, but they now have an RB3 who they are afraid to put on the field to spell the backup Booker. That leaves a FB, Penny, as the backup.

Board- ST'er that does not belong on the field with an NFL offense, but gets meaningful snaps after 3 injuries and makes 0 impact.

Crossen- haven't heard his name once and they traded a 6th rounder to acquire him for 1 year

Gillaspia- ST'er who is not good at special teams

Ebner- ditto- he's old and very slow

Cam Brown- IR but solely on roster because of ST's, however he is at least good in the kicking game

So you have 6 roster spots dedicated to guys who aren't able to contribute to any other facet of the game, plus another 3 for the Kicker, Punter, and LS.
