Would you take Jerry Reese back with no Marc Ross

GiantTuff1 : 10/13/2021 11:20 am
if Judge and Reese wanted to work together... And instead of Ross, Joe Judge gets a heavy say in who the player evaluation / college scouting guy is.

Since the season is screwed, maybe our imaginations can keep us entertained.

No, that ship has sailed.
Section331 : 10/13/2021 11:22 am : link
He was in charge of one good (admittedly very good) draft in '07, but very few after that. Blaming Ross isn't the answer, Reese thought it was OK to keep him around.
Why

Why would the Giants ?
Is their any world where the Giants would ever consider Reese again

but, after 2011, he had some terrible drafts for the better part of most of the decade. He is a large reason why the Giants have sucked for some time. Who would take him back?
Not no...

many talented players. I think Ross screwed him up and set him on a bad path as GM.

He didn’t respect or evaluate the need for good OL either, and when he did he signaled his preference: Scherff, Lewan, Stanley I think, and the former RT from Tennessee.

Jerry got a ready maid team
Giants73 : 10/13/2021 11:42 am : link
Added some extra bodies but that o line was Accorsi’s. Jerry let it get old and eventually it was the downfall. Ernie left him a QB. Ernie left him 3 elite pass rushers in Strahan, Osi and Tuck. Tuck who Jerry traded to Denver for Al Wilson, which luckily our medical staff canceled the move by Wilson’s medicals. If Jerry and Judge want to team up, do it elsewhere let them destroy another franchise.
As others have said, that ship has sailed.
Gmen703 : 10/13/2021 11:42 am : link
He had an eye for WRs, pass rushers, and DTs. But I don't know if he could right the ship that started sinking with him.

Injuries, bad drafts and bad luck got him his one way ticket outta here.
No
Go Terps : 10/13/2021 11:46 am : link
Nothing against Reese, who is a trillion times better than Gettleman...but the Giants have got to stop looking into their past for answers. They won't find them there.
Scary thing is it wouldn't really surprise me if
j_rud : 10/13/2021 11:47 am : link
Mara and Co explore this option. It's what they do. Comfortable and familiar. Even Judge, an outside-the-box hire, benefitted heavily from the endorsement of someone from the Giants past.
Agree with Giants 73
PaulN : 10/13/2021 11:50 am : link
What Reese did is so overblown it is sickening to listen to. He was very good at picking wide recievers. Hit on a lot of them. Other then wide recievers, he nailed it with Bradshaw. That is about it.

I look at Reese's stint in two halves. Prior to the second SB, Reese was better than Gettleman. No doubt about it. Afterwards, Reese's drafts were just terrible. Wilson, Apple, Flowers, Engram in the first. Come on. Gettleman did better than that, even when you account for draft position. Let alone Reese being a million times better.
But to make you feel right
PaulN : 10/13/2021 11:51 am : link
He is better then Gettleman. That is for certain. At least he had a strength. Now we have a GM who's strength is having a bug fucking mouth.
Actually Kate Mara

if Reese was so damn good...
KDavies : 10/13/2021 11:56 am : link
how do you justify the record after the 2nd SB until Gettleman? 4 losing records in 6 seasons, 9 wins one of the other years, culminating in a 3-13 record.

I agree. I don't want Reese or Gettleman at this point. And a definite NO to Abrams. It's time for some fresh blood at the GM spot.
No
Biteymax22 : 10/13/2021 11:56 am : link
But I give him credit for being professional and never complaining about the organization in public or showing any ounce of bitterness like Marc does when he's on TV.
How much of Reese's bad drafts can be attributed to Ross
GiantTuff1 : 10/13/2021 11:57 am : link
running the college drafting in 2011 onward?

When Reese was director of college scouting the Giants seemed to hit on quite a few players, especially prior to him being GM. If Reese takes the blame at GM while Ross ran the drafts, then some of Accorsi's success must also be attributed to the role Reese played for EA too, no?
Psst...
PwndPapi : 10/13/2021 12:00 pm : link
I know Tom Coughlin is a sacred cow around here, but Tom had a say in all of Reese's drafts. Most coaches do. The Giants have said that they run the draft by committee.

I don't think the issue was so much overall philosophy as it was the quality of scouting in the collegiate ranks. You have to trust what the scouts are telling you or you're firing blind.

I generally agree with this view, but when Reese ran the drafts we were no slouches. Maybe he can be a contributor if he's not the leader of the ship? Or do we just stay away from anyone from the past?

Gettleman's drafts have been horrific. Look at this roster.

Reese caught a lot of shit for a couple things he ended up being right on:

1. Eli was done and they needed to move on
2. "Basketball on grass"
Part of the reason Reese got let go is that he lost his energy

So no. He wanted to go home and be with his family.

bullshit. He was an excellent evaluator of Defensive linemen and pass rushers, a skill we desperately need right now. Not suggesting we should rehire him, but Reese obviously had talent, which is not something I’d say about DG.

The jump from Ourlads to running a franchise would be too much for anyone. But I seriously would bring in Sy into the personnel department as a "quality control" entry level position.

I certainly wouldn't hire Accorsi as a "consultant" on the next GM search.
Depends on the question
The Jake : 10/13/2021 1:26 pm : link
Are you asking if we could go back in time, would we keep Reese, knowing what we know now about how it has turned out since he left? Abso-fucking-lutely yes. Gettleman is the worst thing that has happened to this franchise since Ray Handley. Maybe worse at this point.

If you're asking, however, whether we should bring Reese back to fix this debacle, then no. We need to wipe the slate completely clean.

Sean : 10/13/2021 1:54 pm : link
But Reese runs laps around Gettleman. DG is 16-37 as GM thus far.

Reese was 98-84 as NYG GM which includes two SB titles.
He's much better than DG, but no.
Dave in Hoboken : 10/13/2021 1:57 pm : link
That's going backwards. And as good as Reese's first half of his run here as GM was great; his second half here as GM was equally as bad. It's time to move into the future, as difficult as that may be for some in this organization.
the league is just a little

This is completely inaccurate.

Jason Pierre Paul almost had a Defnsive MVP year with the Giants (average of 10 sacks per year since he left Giants)
Landon Collins was an All Pro and had a defensive MVP type season. (Of course he has flaws, but in the right system he thrived)
Erek Flowers and Justin Pugh are still starting in the league for other teams
Eli Apple is still starting for another team
Odell Bekcham Jr is still starting for another team
linval Joseph is starting for another team
Romeo Okwara is starting for another team (10 sacks last year)
Davin Tomlinson is starting for another team

Maybe a big part of the problem was player development for the Giants...Reese definitely drafted NFL starters with many of his picks.

Every NFL team thinks their identity is "toughness, grit, and physicality".

The Giants before Reese weren't exactly the Steelers. They wish they were.
