Referee Announcements of Calls

Big Al : 10/14/2021 10:49 pm
Just saw this tweet. Had not really noticed the change but it is true.

“ Fᴏᴏᴛʙᴀʟʟ Zᴇʙʀᴀs

Under the Walt Anderson regime, referee announcements are "less is best." No announcement of specifics of why a call is reversed. Penalties that were once announced as use of helmet are generic personal fouls. Even ejection announcements are simply "# is disqualified"”

I don’t think that was the reason. Some officials tended to mug for the camera with crazy long explanations on ticky tack calls. Not to mention I am sure NFL replay staff doesn’t like being called out on Twitter when they are demonstrably proven wrong. If fans/media aren’t given the basis how can they know what replay relied on! I personally think in ten words or less you can give reasoning for almost anything rather than using a generic term that could encompass many things.

And feels like it’s to avoid second guessing. But it helps to know what they saw or how they interpreted things. Like “the blazer bobbled the ball” or whatever.

And of course we can’t get any “giving him the business” calls, and NFL classic.
