NFT: What's the Weirdest Song You Grew Up Listening To?

M.S. : 10/15/2021 8:18 am

Baby Boomers out there will probably remember this gem: "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!" performed by Jerry Samuels (billed as Napoleon XIV).

Talk about weird novelty songs -- this 1966 gem hit the mother load rising to #3 on the U.S. Billboard Top 100. It's about a guy who has gone insane because he has been abandoned by a... Friend? / Wife? / Lover?

Not until the very end do we find out who exactly ran out on him:

I cooked your food
I cleaned your house
And this is how you pay me back
For all my kind unselfish, loving deeds
Ha! Well you just wait
They'll find you yet and when they do
They'll put you in the A.S.P.C.A.
You mangy mutt

Even as a (very) insensitive and unaware 6th grader, I sorta realized this song was in bad taste. It was really quite offensive and was eventually pulled from radio stations after an outcry from mental health organizations and the general public.

Be that as it may, the tune was catchy and hypnotic, and the words were sorta clever, and the B-Side was even stranger as this novelty song was recorded in reverse!

Although this catchy song was written in good fun by Pete Townsend about an accordian, the lyrics were "intended as a poorly aimed dirty joke."

"Squeeze Box" is a slang term for an accordion, but it is also slang for the vagina. The band just wanted to see if they could get away with singing about the joys of explicit sex.

You mean the "in and out...and in and out...and in and out" isn't about their excitement over the accordian?

True confession here -- this song had (and has) been in my mind for so long that, when my daughter was born, I named her Maddy, almost as though in honor of "Matty told Hatty." In fact, my handle M.S. is actually my daughter's who gave it to me years and years ago after I somehow lost my original handle JonS.

Love 'The Israelites' too. It still sounds good today. I may be wrong, but I believe this tune is credited as the first reggae song ever to cross over successfully to the US market. And changing genres, I think 'Wooly Bully' is viewed similarly as to the Tex-Mex sound.

This weird, funny, clever song would be massively politically incorrect if released today. All of the campers in the early 1960s were singing Larry Verne's "Mr. Custer." One of the verses went like this:

Please Mr. Custer, I don't wanna go
Listen, Mr. Custer, please don't make me go
There's a redskin a-waitin' out there, just fixin to take my hair
A coward I've been called cuz I don't wanna wind up dead or bald

I went to sleep-away camp on Long Lake in upstate New York. One of the smart locals opened up an ice cream place in town called, "Custard's Last Stand." It's still going 60 years later!

'Wooly Bully' by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs - I mean what is this about?

Matty told Hatty about a thing she saw
Had two big horns and a wooly jaw
Wooly bully, wooly bully (yeah, that's right)
Wooly bully, wooly bully, wooly bully

True confession here -- this song had (and has) been in my mind for so long that, when my daughter was born, I named her Maddy, almost as though in honor of "Matty told Hatty." In fact, my handle M.S. is actually my daughter's who gave it to me years and years ago after I somehow lost my original handle JonS.

In case it hasn't been answered yet (haven't gone through all the posts), Wooly Bully is about a dance

Hatty told Matty
Let's not take no chance
Let's not be L7
Come and learn this dance

So they say ... but then what was it that Matty saw that had "two big horns and a wooly jaw"?

BTW from these lyrics I learned that "L7" was once slang for "square," which in turn meant unhip in those days.

It was kinda catchy… my eldest brother used to play it and I sorta took a shine to it many decades later!

There was "James, Hold The Ladder Steady," a song about eloping with a guy who can't hold the ladder without it shaking.

Then there was "Big Daddy," a song about a notorious troublemaker who ran off with the Mayor's wife, who tried to take the Sheriff's life, and so on. Key line is "Big Daddy's Alabam-y bound"

And of course, "I Love Onions," about the vegetable that makes your eyes water when you cut them up.

Quote:
Remember when you ran away
And I got on my knees and begged you
Not to leave because I'd go berserk?
WELL,
You left me anyhow and
Then the days got worse and worse
And now you see I've gone completely
out of my mind,
AND
They're coming to take me away,
Haha, they're coming to take me away,
Ho ho, hee hee, ha ha,
To the funny farm
Where Life is Beautiful all the time
And I'll be happy to see
Those Nice Young Men
In their Clean White Coats
And they're coming to take me AWAY,
HA HAAAAA
You thought it was a joke,
and so you LAUGHED, YOU LAUGHED
When I had said that losing you
Would make me flip my lid,
RIGHT?
You know you laughed.
I HEARD you laugh, you laughed
You laughed and laughed
And then you left,
But now you know I'm Utterly Mad
AND
They're coming to take me away,
Haha, they're coming to take me away,
Ho ho, hee hee, ha ha,
To the Happy Home with Trees and Flowers
And Chirping Birds and basket weavers
Who sit and smile and
Twiddle their thumbs and toes
And they're coming to Take me Away,
HAHAAAAAAAAA

I described him as a "mean motor scooter and a bad go-getter."

That came from a fun, clever (and weird) 1960 novelty hit song by The Hollywood Argyles that reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The stanza I had in mind went like this:

The cats don't bug him cuz they know bettah (Alley Oop, oop, oop-oop)
Cuz he's a mean motah scootah and a bad go-gettah (Alley Oop, oop, oop-oop)
