"There are basic truths— you have to run the ball, you have to stop the run, you have to rush the passer. If you are seriously deficient in any one of those three areas, it makes it tough. It's going to be tough sledding."
-Dave Gettleman
Well, I guess this is the tough sledding part huh?
Man, we don't do any of these. And haven't in years.
I agree with 2 of the 3. The other led to the SB pick, a completely blown #2 in the whole draft pick
Building a team to run the ball is stupid and being able to stop the run is pretty useless as well.
You can't even play physical in the secondary so spending a ton of money on a secondary is becoming useless as well (we did that).
QB/OL/DL (especially edge) is how you build your team and invest draft capital/$$$...everything else can be found.
Look at your better teams in the league and those that go on to the playoffs and win championships. Those that can't get exposed at some point with rare exceptions.
2. Pressure the opposing QB
3. Stretch the field
In that regard, it’s been:
Fail.
Fail.
Fail.
Respectively.
2. Develop a cohesive plan to build out a winning roster
3. If don't win, then repeat 1 & 2 above until you win
1. QB play
2. OLine - Run the ball and protect QB, it's a passing league, but what separates good teams from bad is the ability to run the ball when it is needed. Pick up that 3rd or 4th and short, to run the clock out at the end of the game, also running the ball opens up the passing game.
3. Set edge and pressure the passer
4. CB's that can cover
5. MLB that is sideline to sideline ability
But, if you preach this when you are hired and are totally failing on all 3, then ???

I don't agree that the 3rd one had to lead to SB. It should lead to building an OL that is good enough that you can plug in any decent RB and he'll do well.
