Postmortem on the Giants 2021 Season

M.S. : 10/19/2021 9:53 am

Of course there are plenty of games left, but they won't really add or subtract to what we already know. So, thus, a postmortem of this season which begins and ends with the strange decisions made by Giants management at the end of last season.

In a nutshell, they acted and behaved as though the team was moving in the right direction with a lot of pieces already in place. And all they needed was to secure the services of: a good cover man (Adoree’ Jackson) opposite James Bradberry; a major WR weapon (Kenny Golladay) for a depleted WR unit; and, a true two-way TE (Kyle Rudolph) who would be Daniel Jones' security blanket.

Check, check and check. But in retrospect, it's so plain to see the Giants architectural plans had several design flaws:

**Their three critical new pieces were all coming off injuries (Adoree' Jackson Knee; Kenny Golladay hamstring; Kyle Rudolph foot);

**They let a very healthy and strong run defender (Dalvin Tomlinson) walk for not a lot of free agency money;

**There was zero upgrade of an offensive line that was a bottom-half NFL unit;

**They did very little to address their pass rush, believing that the schemes developed last year would make up for any deficiencies.

And then the coup de grace. A hurricane of injuries blew through their flimsy house, built upon a weak foundation, and the inevitable happened.

It all fell down.

Are still consistently getting their butts kicked in the trenches. Not protecting Jones, not creating great running room, and getting stonewalled and pushed around on D. Until they fix the trenches their major investments at receiver and cornerback won’t matter.

Also Jones has not been consistent. Very good vs Washington and NO. Average to below average against Denver and ATL. Awful last week.
The defense is what has me.confused....as i.expected

Them.to be the strength of team.

With all due respect to Tomilinson, who was a nice piece but not much more.

It still looks to me....the strategy has changed....as i felt they were much more agressive last year....creative blitz packages, with press man coverage from Blackberry....now all the coverage seems soft...more read and react....which offers more chances for INTs....but all are being dropped.

Confusing to me
The strategy to get a CB, TE and WR
Bill in UT : 10/19/2021 10:12 am : link
was probably correct. The people they signed to fill those needs, so far not working out very well.
It's just insane how many corners Gettleman has brought in

And the only one who has been good is Bradberry....and even he has been a disappointment this year.

I think these were tactical moves at best. And each one of these moves took the Giants eyes off the LOS. Both sides of the ball. That’s what a first class disaster looks like.
Failure to fully address the OL and the LBs

Has been an ongoing problem for at least a decade.

a flawed cap strategy that will result in constraints on what they can do in 2022.
Adoree signing was stupid as hell

I have already typed it several times.. if you didn't know that it was a bad signing at the signing time then I don't think you belong in the Front Office.

This is what's so frustrating with the Giants. On paper, most of the moves that DG has made make sense from a strategic perspective. Other than drafting a RB at #2, I can't argue much with the strategy. Whether it's luck or culture, the Giants haven't gotten what was expected out of the new pieces.

Ugh! That’s the nasty little time bomb that will still be ticking after Gettleman is “retired.”

The decision to throw around so much money this off-season was terribly flawed. You do that if you're a couple of pieces away from being a contender, but management allowed one good win last year to color their approach.

Another example of the organization's inability, no, unwillingness to self-scout.

Do you realize Adoree has a $15.5mm cap hit in 2022? And he is uncuttable due to the dead cap hit.

You guys greeting about DG mortgaging the future to get wins this season? It’s already happened.

I hear what you’re saying, but if most of Gettleman’s decisions failed, then his decision-making was simple wrong no matter how much “sense” they made.

This is the termite nest in our walls even after Gettleman vacates the premises.

Thats exactly what I am complaining about.. I started a long post on the same topic.. I just didn't use this example because I had a better one.. but yes.. DG needs to go.. he doesn't know how to evaluate a team..

This is one thing that doesn’t get mentioned enough. He has used so many premium picks and $ on corners it’s unfathomable. And our corners are still TERRIBLE.
It's kind of crazy
thedogfather : 10/19/2021 12:22 pm : link
how every FA they have signed either stinks, is injury prone or has severely declined. Everyone knew resigning Leonard Williams meant you are signing that lazy corpse who played for the Jets and not the money hungry player from last season. Same with Golladay. You KNOW he's going to miss games here and there.

Yea and when he was blowing it up the resources should’ve been pumped into OL/DL until it was fixed, even if that meant street FAs in the secondary.

Just a piss poor attempt at a rebuild.
