I think the best compliment I can give it is that it is one of the few adaptations that is every bit as good as the source material. I had only ever finished the first book, but I now have the urge to go ahead and start reading more in the series.
I don't have a single complaint or bone to pick. I'm struggling to think of an adaptation that captured the book as well as Villeneuve did. Will probably watch it again tomorrow on HBO. I could've sat in the theater and watched it again back to back.

I could have sat through another hour, the time flew by.

I felt like a little kid, didn't want it to end although it wrapped exactly where I expected. Still think it's crazy we haven't had any news on the casting of Feyd Rautha as they're already apparently in pre production.

Don't forget, the movie covers only the original book, by far the best, of the Dune saga. Children of Dune is moderately good, but not nearly up to the standard set in Dune. Forget about the rest of the series, including collateral damage from imitators and money-seekers. They descend into a miasma of increasingly bizarre scenarios.
I knew nothing of the Dune universe going into the movie. I was confused at first but really got into the story as I learned more and more. The 2.5 hours flew by, and I left wanting to see more. The visuals were a absolutely stunning, and the acting was very good.
for those interested in reading up a bit more on production

this is a really good article. It does describe the book a bit but nothing major, plotwise. How the ‘Dune’ team brought the villainous Harkonnen to life - ( New Window )
That was a good read, loved the direction they went with the Harkonnens. Here's a good one from Den of Geek that talked about the subtle but still impactful changes Villeneuve made. I agree that opening the movie with Chani rather than some text from an unseen character is a clever way to tell the same story but through a very different lense. I also think it's going to save them from the White Savior Trope criticism, which I'm sure some out there were itching to unleash.

Dude I was hoping there was another hour, lol
Man I hope so, this would be a huge letdown. I can already see the last scene in my mind, fund it!
