or do today's players simply not play with that type of reckless abandon. Everything feels so much more controlled, for lack of a better term. Maybe I'm seeing ghosts idk

NFL rules have defenders by the balls. If you play like butkis nowadays it will be a 15 yard penalty on every drive.
and never coming back. Most of the greatest back 7 or 8 defensive players of the 60's, 70's and 80's would have to radically change their games to play in the current NFL. most probably couldn't do it and would be certain package only players with the exception of LT.
He'd still be the best player in the league if you dropped 1981 LT into 2021. That's how far ahead of his time he was. The speed, the motor, the football smarts, the power it would all play as well today as it did then.
Butkus would be a 2 down player in this NFL. Ronnie Lott would be a coverage liability. You get the idea.

It’s not just that, it’s the intensity that’s just not there. The lack of impact contact, seeing RBs truck LBs, shoulder and not arm tackles, the lack of mean in blocking. And not just the Giants, it’s leaguewide, even the very good teams.
get over it already... this was a million years ago.
Watch and listen to the tape at the 3:50 mark where the undisputed heart and soul of the team tells his teammates that they wouldn’t be 1-14 if they got their heads out of their asses and played to their ability. I suggest this holds true in NY in 2021.
Given the terrible physical and mental toll on those players
I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to go back to 60s-70s-80s style play. Players' brains (if not joints) were damaged and are still being damaged.
I loved watching football in that era, too, and if I were a better man, I'd give up football altogether. But at the very least, I can support efforts to make the game safer for the players and not pine for the good old days that turned guys like Mike Webster into homeless madmen and drove other guys, like Junior Seau and Dave Duerson, to suicide.
