Scott Pioli on papa banks show podcast

dancing blue bear : 10/22/2021 10:37 pm
Real interesting interview. A lot of great insight into front office stuff.

This is not a fire gettlemen thread (tho I’m sure it will be soon) but besides being interesting , considering the connection to the team it could be viewed as a name floating opportunity.

Anyway. I liked the way he approached things. Great insight. Worth a listen
can you give a brief summary of what he said

A lot of stories about his time with Carl, little bill, and parcellls in terms of how they all learned how to build a program then refine the process of implementing it. The coaching players hard was a core value of little bill and this not all players were built for that program. (Struck a chord as far a judge)

Scouting process and how a GMs job is to serve the head coach and serve the organization in terms of doing the best thing for team always

Hitting on players is like a batting average sorta. Miss more then hit. And all the reasons why a great prospect might not develop.

The analytic vs football people argument and treatment of each other. (And really a reflection on society when groups of thought disagree)

It’s over an hour so there is a lot but worthwhile IMO

You really think he s be a candidate? I remember at one time he was pretty sought after as a GM, but I was thinking his time had come and gone.
It is a worthy listen

no he doesn't talk about Gettleman but you know Pioli is on because Papa and Banks knows whats coming and gives the listener an inside to the process

I do. I think Mara is going to have a strong preference for someone who has experience. Both Pioli and Thomas Dimitroff came up through the Pats organization. If I had to bet. I’d say Judge is retained so both guys could make sense to come in and work with Judge. Both are also in their mid 50’s, so young enough where they could be in charge for at least 10 years.

Wonder how he would be received here. Does he fit the outside the organization demographic?
he's also Parcells' son-in-law, so there is a also that additional

I’d be okay with it. NFL GM is a HARD job. A lot of guys fail. I think the Giants could do a lot worse than Pioli/Dimitroff.

It could be even deeper than that. Papa and Banks potentially put him on to get the fan base warmed up to him in the event that Mara has already decided to hire this guy. Pre-selling the selection.
I think that just about anyone
GiantsRage2007 : 10/23/2021 8:09 am : link
Can be better than Gettleman... seriously. He's Matt Millenesque.
He had a rough time at Kansas City so buyer beware
Lines of Scrimmage : 10/23/2021 8:17 am : link
I think John has to take a very hard and honest look and determine why they are in the state they are. It all goes back to the Giants not being competitive enough along the line of scrimmage on both sides imv. They changes HC's, QB's, offensive/defensive systems and they are still losing.

Even with a marginal QB, if you can excel in these areas your teams stand a outstanding chance to be .500. Then you find the HC, QB and have NFL quality players on the perimeter you move up a little. Add in a couple of elite perimeter players you contend for championships.

The first goal is to get a GM that understands you need a certain baseline to have a chance and then solve the rest. Then if you have to change HC's or QB's you have a foundation for quicker results.

I think it would be naïve to not at least consider the way that the Giants' state media tactics tend to work.

This could very well just an available guest with a background on a relevant current set of topics. Or it could be the way Hanlon's team begins to shape perception among the fanbase.
I wouldn't hire him.

Gimmee someone from a successful organization like the Ravens, Chiefs, or even the Bills lately. The Bills have been doing a bang up job lately acquiring talent.

More of the same. Just hiring people connected to Belichek. He was a failure in Kansas City.
GD..
Sean : 10/23/2021 8:33 am : link
I think it is the latter. I don’t get the sense this is a coincidence. Remember this about Pioli & Dimitroff - they can be hired before the end of the season. Mara hired Gettleman before the end of the season.

The general manager of the Bills came up with Gettleman in Carolina.

with all these retread executives with connections and digging at the rotted tree roots of championship legacies elsewhere or in past.

Pioli really imploded in KC. Terrible hires and decisions and force feeding what worked in NE down in KC. Drafting was also pretty bad. Including hiring Todd Haley (Parcells connection), Crennel and Weis as coordinators (Pats/Jets connections). He also stuck to idea Matt Cassel would work as a starting QB (bring that Pats backup magic!).

Dimitroff took forever to get Falcons off ground. Had a terrible offensive line most of the time despite continual draft capital invested. Really only had one half decent stretch of few years in his tenure including the SB collapse.

I agree. These are organizations that we should mirror. They are consistently good and seem to have good pipelines of talent for depth.

I would even throw the 9ers in there. Adam Peters, the assistant GM to Lynch, is pretty well regarded in NFL circles.

Pioli once intrigued me, but I think he's a bit overrated now that I have studied his record.

Why begin a thread about something that won’t happen. You paint a hopeless situation, If you believe what you write, why stay a fan?
Thanks for the heads up

This is an excellent listen I highly recommend it.

They covered a lot of topics and jumped around a lot but something Pioli said really registered with me. He talked about how often you miss in the draft and Pioli said he felt bad for certain players who took a lot of heat because of where they drafted. He said GM's should do a better job managing expectations. So I guess touched by the hand of god, gold jacket guy isn't what he'd have in mind.

I want to listen to it again because it was so good. Carl Banks was way better when he didn't have to try to defend the current Giants. A lot of great conversation about both of their time with Parcells, Belichick and others from their staffs. Pioli even said Ernie Adams name out loud. I didn't think that was allowed.

For those who don't know Pioli is married to Bill Parcells daughter.

There was one part that made me laugh. So many times we hear people say you can't compare a football team to a "regular" business but after listening to this podcast I'd use it as evidence you can.

Pioli talked about the office politics between the "football guys" and the analytics departments. Sounded like the hundreds of sales department and marketing deperatment disputes I had to officiate. Banks mentioned that he would tell players to succeed they need to show up on time, pay attention and work hard. That's the part that made me laugh. I can't even count the number of times I told young people starting out show up, shut up and bust your ass.

This advice applies to any business. 80% of sucess is showing up. 10% is talent and 10% is luck. The best thing you can be for a HC or a manger in medium size business is available and reilable.

Once they find out you can be counted on to always show up and always give effort and don't go into business for yourself but carry out orders well they'll give you more and more to do as long as you can handle it. You'll wind up doing other people's work for no extra money/credit and having those people resent you but it will pay off and serve you well in the long run.

Again if I had a nickel for every MBA that I had to tell you're not in school anymore and you need to be part of a team for this to work. I could have retired 20 years before I did. Some things seem to be universal. Football or fortune 1000 company.

joe judge is not a good head coach
GiantsFan84 : 10/23/2021 4:23 pm : link
it's been painfully clear this year. he looked ok last year because we all agreed shurmur was a horrible HC (and he was even worse than Judge).

but judge has shown me nothing this year that he should be retained. he's not great with the challenge flag. he's HORRIBLE with knowing when to go for it and when not to. the rotating of the olineman never made sense. the team is not some well oiled organized machine like he likes to think it is. he doesn't have one redeeming quality as a head coach as to why he should stick around after this shit show of a season

so when people start talking about bringing in a new england front office person because of ties to judge i get triggered.
