NGT: WFT sliding Landon Collins to OLB

Toth029 : 10/23/2021 11:13 am
"I'm a team player," Collins said. "Do I like playing down there? I'm good at it. If I'm good at it, I'll play there. If I need to be played there, cool. Other than that, do I like playing linebacker? No. No I don't. I don't like hitting big linemen, getting big linemen off me. I'm undersized for being a linebacker. So yeah, I don't want to play down there, but if need to, yeah, I'll do so. I'm good at it."

"I've made more plays at safety than I've ever made at linebacker," Collins said. "I know what to read, I know how to play it, I know where I can cheat at, I know where to disguise it, I know how to make things work."

I guess when you're bad enough at S, you make he transition. He's battled inconsistency and injury since he's arrived in DC. He is better off, assuming he can stay healthy, to move over full time. His coverage and speed is just not compatible with the modern NFL offense.

An upgrade over Crowder.
Makes sense

I always felt like he could do that here.

Spags and the Giants tried. He didn't want to. Guy is at a point now where he's benched as a S because he's been so bad.

Collins, back in May, said:

“I was just laughing at it,” Collins said of the linebacker speculation. “I was drafted as a safety, and that's where I was going to be. If somebody was to come talk to me about it, we would talk about it. That's about it. If we have packages to put me into play [at linebacker], I'm always open to it. I'd rather have us all DBs on the field anyway. The more DBs, the more merrier.”
Man what happened, how was he such fool's gold?

I thought he was awesome here his first two years.
He seems to
Joey in VA : 10/23/2021 11:37 am : link
Never stop whining about something. He's a good box SS, but that's not really applicable anymore with all the sets and motion and people being deployed all over the field. He's an arrow type of player, fire it and if it doesn't hit it's useless. He can't change direction to keep pace with most offensive players these days.
I dont think

Peppers has a problem at all with a role like that, he flourished last year doing this. The bizarre thing is Graham has him doing a nickel corner type role which is fucking ridiculous.

Completely agree! I don't about you guys but Xavier Mckinney isn't exactly lighting things up out there. Worst thing Graham could do is put Peppers in a position NOT to succeed, which is what he's doing at the moment! At least Peppers has some fire under his ass!

It’s his 7th year. I’d say it’s just the natural progression of most NFL players.

Not For Long.
The Giants have made a lot of mistakes recently
Jay on the Island : 10/23/2021 12:37 pm : link
but letting Landon Collins walk was not one of them. He has been a big disappointment for the money he signed.
These guys should take a page from Thomas Davis's book

...he came in to the league a safety and became an All Pro linebacker.

Ego, pride. Collins was always high on himself which is kind of funny when his Twitter handle is "Humble".

I was going to say the same thing. I thought he played great in the extra LB role last year. I thought they were using him wrong this year or am I missing something? Is Graham trying to get too cute.

I can't believe he was once an All Pro. Has to be the last Giants to earn that distinction no?

That he is. Just looked it up.

And Snacks.

I want to think Jenkins and Vernon were 2nd team.
He'll be ineffective at OLB
JonC : 10/23/2021 2:23 pm : link
he's telling you himself he's undersized. SS is a hybrid position in nature, but he's just too much of a box safety.
Meh.

Any time I hear or read his name, I immediately think of that INT he missed against New England in 2015.

That's what you think of and not the season where he was one of the best defensive players in the NFL?
Always thought he was soft at the edge…
trueblueinpw : 10/23/2021 5:14 pm : link
Collins was another guy we overrated when he was a Giant. He was never that good at setting the edge or playing the run. He didn’t get home as a blitzer. I think we all remember how pathetic he was in any coverage type. All you had to do with Collins was get him running toward the LOS and he was toast in any coverage. He basically could turn and cover. Way overrated as a thumper - even when he was here. Glad he left.

Peps is a different and - in my opinion - much better player. He’s too small to play the Mike though. Tough enough I think and he could cover from there better than Crowder or even Martinez. But he’s too small for the second level he’d get pushed aside by OL. Outside he’s not quick or big enough to get home from the edge. He’s a good SS and he makes plays. Graham needs to get him back in the scheme of things. He made plays last year. Like the rest of the defense though he just looks lost this year.
Great non-signing by Giants
ZogZerg : 10/23/2021 5:34 pm : link
He hasn't earned anywhere need what they paid him.
Collins is a jackass
Dave in PA : 10/23/2021 8:18 pm : link
Best non-sign in a long time, I’ll give Gettleman credit for that

Now, wasn't it his #21 shining under the bright lights when he stood still and allowed the Packers to complete a hail Mary? At the end of that same year, answer me that. Better look up something quickly on your smartphone.

It's actually a pretty common theme for people who self-identify as "humble".
