His 53-yard FG today gives him 10 since he joined New York last year. What is so impressive is that he did it in just his his 23rd game in a Giant uniform.
Gano had been tied with Joe Danelo with nine 50+ yard FGs coming into today. Danelo, who played for the Giants from 1976-1982, played 101 games as a Giant.
I was wondering if he was getting into record territory with all of his long kicks.
Living near Baltimore, fans didn't even blink an eye when Justin Tucker signed for 5 million/year last year. Easy choice. Reliably good kickers just don't grow on trees, as the saying goes.
All that tells me is that Judge doesn't go for it from the 30ish yard line enough.

Aldrick Rosas (2017) and Josh Brown (2014) held the previous record for most 50+ yard FGs in a season with four.

That’s part of it plus playing it safe rather than risking a Daniel Jones turnover
52 yarders used to be ones where you'd hold your breath it even got there.
Now kickers hit the net on anything like 56 yards and under.
What changed?
One correction - Gano has 5 this year and had 5 last year. the final game of the 2020 season was played in January 2021, so that threw me off.
Oh c'mon, I ain't the only one...

Oh for fucks sake - stop fucking whining...

I think players are bigger and stronger at every position, including placekicker. And I think you saw kickers' ranges increase when teams began transitioning away from playing on natural grass fields.
Not only have kickers got stronger, but they're way, way more accurate. In the 1980 season, Toni Fritsch led the NFL in FG percentage at 79.2%. Last season, the top 11 kickers all made more than 90% of their FGs.
And to think that some on BBI wanted to dump him for the no name scrub this preseason. LOL

kickers can kick the ball so much further these days?

Agreed. More kicking indoors has likely helped a lot as well. I'm sure things like training, conditioning, nutrition, etc. have all improves significantly over the decades.

Another factor (in addition to those mentioned above) is that kickers have improved their kicking mechanics. Back in Joe Danelo’s day, kickers had a natural hook that they had to take into account when aiming their kick. The farther out the kick, the more it hooked and thus the more difficult it was. Since then kickers have changed their approach and have largely neutralized the hook.
