I think everyone realizes that we are much less effective in the red zone than between the 20's. Some of it is, of course, execution, but if it were just execution, we wouldn't have more success between the 20's than we do in the red zone. Garrett needs to completely re-work his red zone strategy and do it soon. This failing costs the Giants games.
He either doesn’t trust Jones to pass or this group of receivers to get open. He is holding Jones and offense back with his play calling. On 3 consecutive series first plays he ran to right for no gain or loss.
Something that doesn't get a whole lotta attention: a weak offensive line that cannot run block results in red zone futility.
Mike
when we get inside of the 5, we seem to pull those playmakers off of the field. Bring in extra TEs and line up like it is 4th and inches.
But no one should be fooled by this OL that is probably one of the worst in the NFL at run blocking.Totally not surprised we did not score from the 1 yard line. It would have been nice to see Penney run the ball from the 1 yard line!!!

The team with the best red zone success are teams that can run the ball. Forever and ever, amen.

I wondered also why Penney was not in the game for those plays. He seems to always get the yard needed in the short yardage situations.

Also, that one roll out on 3rd and goal in the 1st half was an awful call on many counts. 1) they should have run it 4 times. 2) they only one receiver in that area. A blown coverage was the only way a pass could be completed. Poorly designed play.

Yep.. specifically the IOL. How many times this year have we not been able to punch it in from a yard or two
I agree the spread formations should help, but you can only do so much as long as #71 and #76 are on the right side of the line. These 2 guys have been really bad all year.
Or put Dexter Lawrence at fullback to just blast a tiny crease. You have to find a way to make 1 Fing yard.
yeah... and have your worst route runner be that player. He has no idea how to come back to the QB to change the angles to our advantage.
He either doesn’t trust Jones
Bingo!!!! And I doubt you are right about Garrett not getting a high school job. More like jones becomes a 3rd string QB somewhere
I know it was barely in the red zone (19 yard line), but the Booker TD run was a well-designed and executed play.
little chance in ending in a TD.
He should have called that play when they were 4th and goal,
or 3rd and goal.
What does he use for a brain?

That would not have worked near the goal line. It worked when it did because the DB's dropped back and gave DJ a lot of room. That space wouldn't have been there near the goal line.
And please never call that play again. I'm not a fan of getting my QB killed stretching for a poorly thrown ball.
In defense of DJ, he does everything correctly which should be a walk-in pitch and catch throw.
But it's not that...and I'm not sure why. I see teams execute this every week with success but when we do, the TE has to scrape the pylon and barely get in lol...not to mention the stepping out of bounds part.
I don't know if it's formation or something being tipped but it seems the Giants can't execute plays that other teams are accomplishing easy.
Again, everything is contested and I'm not sure why. Either it's players or scheme or both.
But it's hurting the QB evaluation.
The excuse he doesn't trust Jones is getting old. Let's trust him to find out if he's the guy LOL
Why aren't pick plays/crossing routes part of redzone?
What's the worry about trust? Are we going to the playoff or something? I see bad teams all the time try things. The Giants should be in a discovery period to find out what they have in 2021.
We are predictable.
I saw one interesting play - sans the flea flicker to DJ. It was the option play to Booker on 3rd and 1. Now that was something different and imaginative. But to ask Garrett to repeat that elsewhere is wishful thinking.
Murray to Hopkins on 3rd & goal from the one yard line. - ( New Window )
Also the commentator was effusive in his praise of Jones rollouts when passing.
So why can't Jones roll out in the Red zone with a couple of pass options or just keep running?
The Ravens qb does it all the time.
Jason needs to study some Ravens tape and crib some plays for our Red zone offense.
Jim, if they're not optimizing the people they have, isn't that on Garrett?
I agree with your premise, especially given how vital it is to NYG to properly evaluate DJ this season. But, as often is the case, there's someone coaching for their job at the same time.
Bootlegs, run option or wishbone-style triple-option are worth a shot to create some misdirection. But, the OL has got to start creating a push especially near the goal line.
Completely agree with the coaching scared part. I think this team sucks and coaches need to take smart risks. I don't think Garrett trusts Jones at all.
Also agree on BillKo's point. Jones has been much better with the ball this year - let's put more on his shoulders and see what we've got.
