Riley Dixon has been quite a letdown

FranknWeezer : 10/25/2021 12:35 pm
As ST-centric as this team is, you'd think between Judge, McCaughey and Quinn, someone could get this guy to better execute pinning the opponent inside the 10. Many times this year he's blasted balls into the EZ, mitigating the whole reason we didn't go for it on 4th down. I keep waiting for him to hit a moon ball that gives our gunners time to get downfield and down one inside the 5. And the next coffin-corner kick I see from him will be the first. We've got Feagles 'in the building' doing radio work with Schmeelk...can't we get him to come out to the practice field and help Dixon with his technique? I'm only half kidding.
He's awful
nygfaninorlando : 10/25/2021 12:52 pm : link
but has been flying under the radar with such poor performances elsewhere on the roster. In today's NFL, if you're not going for it on 4th down inside opponents territory, you need a punter that can pin the ball inside the 10 yard line on a regular basis. Other teams punters are much more adept with putting back spin on the ball and keeping it out of the end zone. A skill Dixon has not figured out.
Riley's going to be a cap casualty for sure

Dixon pisses me off at least one punt a game by
Jimmy Googs : 10/25/2021 1:06 pm : link
continuing to boot it into the end zone when he doesn't have to. Some of these aren't even close to being good kicks as they actually LAND in the endzone telling me he is missing his intended target by a wide margin.

Outside of Gano, Judge's special team performers were disappointing as last year finished up, and flat out bad this year in I think every game. Several more penalties yesterday hurting field position, and some awful blocking against opposing gunners who easily take out our returners.

Apologies for stating the obvious, but not a good look for a Head Coach with his background. Only displaying his weaknesses just as much as some players...
And to think
Koffman : 10/25/2021 1:09 pm : link
they actually traded for this guy. Which is probably why he is still on the roster, Gettleman never wants to admit his screw-ups.
He’s below average
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 10/25/2021 1:13 pm : link
Could he better? Sure. He is not awful. He is not the guy holding the team back from winning.
Other than Gano...
BillKo : 10/25/2021 1:13 pm : link
... have we made a big special teams play in Judge's regime?

I don't think we've had a good KO or punt return, nor a tackle that has caused a turnover.

Weird.

On a team that's 8-15 overall, you'd think specials would be the one area we'd shine.
In a league with 32 teams
nygfaninorlando : 10/25/2021 1:22 pm : link
Dixon ranks 33rd among punters this year with punts downed inside the 20 yard line. We know this isn't from lack of punts or because we have such a lethal offense that doesn't utilize the punter much (ie. Bills or Rams).

He's near the top of the league in number of punts and dead last in punts downed inside the 20. Just awful.
Probably a cap casualty
GiantsRage2007 : 10/25/2021 1:26 pm : link
Anecdotally... he's a super nice kid. Went to HS with some friends of my son here locally (CBA), and college (SU). Also, I played in a golf tourney with him a few summers back.

I know cool story bro...

Gotta perform though. I hope he improves.

I thought that yesterday. 2 times, he is not getting it done. He was pretty good in tghe beggining when he got here, but has not improved and probably gotten worse. I thought after the first year he would develop into a plus punter.

That said Gano has been great, and the coverage teams have been good. The return teams are not good or bad

that's dumb, he's the opposite. he's not afraid to cut players he's signed to contracts (Omameh), trade players he signed to contracts (Odell) or he's drafted (Baker)
He’s been better.....not this year however......
Simms11 : 10/25/2021 1:41 pm : link
He is a good holder for Gano and that is an aspect that often gets overlooked, but there should be others capable.
I'm honestly surprised he hasn't been cut already
Eric on Li : 10/25/2021 1:51 pm : link

Riley has not been good for a while. Average at best. Bu he had the

good fortune of going against the Panthers punter yesterday and he is truly awful. I've seen better high school punters.
Could be worse,
Mad Mike : 10/25/2021 2:23 pm : link
the Panthers' guy yesterday was brutal. He's a waiver wire guy, you'd hope your well paid punter is better than him, but still, that was ugly for them yesterday.
Punter should always be on or near the vet min

in today’s NFL. It’s just not an important position in today’s NFL. Many of the situations where you try to “pin an opponent back inside the 20” are situations where you’re better going for it on 4th down.

You want someone competent there of course, but I doubt there’s much of a difference between the 10th and 25th best NFL punters when it comes to win probability added.

I've seen many a playoff game decided by the punter, including NYG punters and those playing against them.

KC got in trouble last year due to inconsistency with their Punter. Helps having Mahomes, Hill, and Kelce to bail them out. Dixon is having awful year as a P, but there has been no issues with the snaps and holds on XP and FG's so does that count for something?
Wasn't this a plus aspect of his game

his first year here and helped get him a new contract? Since then, he has been mediocre to worse for us.
I know it was mentioned earlier...

but my God that Carolina punter was horrendous yesterday. I don't think I've ever seen a worse performance by a punter.

our punter gets paid well and sucks
pls cut him

I think Araiza is only a Junior.
I am admittedly biased, but I watch MSU every week and their punt team has been great and a big part of the is Barringer. He has the leg, but also can kick out of bounds and doesn't outkick the coverage.

He sucks. And I think the FO/HC know as much, seeing that they've brought in punters for tryouts. I guess there's a reason those tryout dudes aren't in the league though.
How many directional punters are there in the league now?

Prime- any way we can get @Jfeagles down to the practice field to teach Dixon how to coffin corner or not to blast pretty much every punt with a chance to be downed inside the 10 out the back of the EZ? Thought this was supposed to be a ST-centric coaching staff?

Yeah, I never understood that. It seems like a very effective style, but it's never been widely used. Easier said than done I guess, but it really seems like more guys should punt that way.
