Jones is my guy. Not sure how his career ends….

RELICDOA : 10/26/2021 10:41 am
with the Giants but the kid has heart and the will to do whatever it takes to win. That’s the example we need from our leader. The way he plays should transcends to the rest of the team. I remember Simms going face to face with Ronnie Lott, Eli finally clapping back at Tiki’s comments. I think that one hand catch and then absorbing the hit could be a point in time where we look back and say DJ became one of the undisputed leaders on this team. He’s a play maker! Not sure it all turns out but this kids leaves it all out on the field! I’m def a Daniel Jones guy at this point!
I'm with you

Love DJ. He's been my favorite player on the team since his first game vs TB. I'll admit it's based as much on optimism as performance at this point, but I think he's the guy.
I like Jones alot
The Dude : 10/26/2021 11:05 am : link
think he can definitely be our guy. Unfortunately, he might be in a position where its not up to him (in terms of his effort and play leading him to more years here). I know BBI is feeling good this week, but theres been few and far between the past few years. As much as i like DJ....if the season ends in a losing one i would LOVE John Mara to give a GM full control over his: Coach, Coordinators, QB, etc. If that includes DJ and Judge, then great...if not, just based on the pure thought process I'd support it to. DJ belongs in this league. Guy can play.
I am also sold on Jones
Hammer : 10/26/2021 11:15 am : link
As I've said previously, I like his attitude, toughness, accuracy and ability to run the offense.

I'm now looking forward to the rest of team catching up to him.
This...

Me too

I remember Simms getting benched (he was struggling) but I loved his grit and rooted for him to succeed. He hadn't yet won me over as a franchise guy, but I loved watching him and hoped he could be.

Same feeling with Jones.
jones hasn't proven he's the guy yet but he's proven he's worth
Eric on Li : 10/26/2021 11:31 am : link
continuing to invest time in to see.

from a traits stand point are there any boxes he doesn't check? I'm not positive but now lacking the crutch argument of turnovers, I'd guess the jones haters would say he lacks something intangible ("it") because there's nothing tangible he lacks. He's highly athletic, he can make all the throws, and he's shown his toughness this year multiple times. He's shown that he can make improvements in reading defenses and manipulating coverage while reducing bad plays.

so what is "it" that he lacks and is it possible that it he could still get there?
for clarification...

....how does the 5th year option work?

DJ will go into his 4th year next year.

When does the option need to be picked up? I do believe that the option dollar number is predetermined by his draft position (which I think was probably a reach for what he's delivered so far). So that dollar number is an issue considering salary cap.

Can the Giants simply allow him to play out his 4th year on a make good contract year and then negotiate with him after the 2022 season before the FA period?

I also assume they could sign him during the season mid year in 2022 if things are going well.
well...
DannyDimes : 10/26/2021 11:38 am : link
Count me in on Jones as well... there's no way I want to start over and "guess" at another college guy. Jones has ALL the tools, tangibles and intangibles...
If a friend was trying to set you up on a blind date…
Jim in Tampa : 10/26/2021 11:44 am : link
and you asked… “What’s she like?

And your friend responds by saying something like, “She’s a very nice person, good sense of humor, has a great job…” and he doesn’t mention her physical appearance, it’s usually because her physical appearance is not that good.

So if the best you can say about Jones is…

- kid has heart
- will to do whatever it takes to win
- the impact of his one handed catch…

That’s not exactly “selling him” as a franchise QB.

I mean if you were talking about a REAL franchise QB you’d probably say things like, he has a great arm, is an accurate passer, good decision maker, very productive, moves well in the pocket to avoid the rush, etc.

You wouldn’t lead with “kid has heart” and “will do whatever it takes to win”.

And calling Jones a "playmaker" when he's managed just 40 TD passes in 34 games (5 in 7 games this year) and has not been very good in the red zone... is being VERY generous.
Kent Graham had heart, Dave Brown had heart,
Section331 : 10/26/2021 11:48 am : link
but I wouldn't want either as my long term answer at QB. Maybe we should assume that most NFL players have heart, putting yourself out there isn't exactly for the meek.

We need a QB who can consistently make plays. DJ has flashed at times, but hasn't done it nearly often enough. All the heart in the world isn't going to change that. He needs to play at a high level, which he has shown at times, more consistently.

Usually first week of May entering year 4 it needs to be picked up. So this spring.
I also like Jones
Boatie Warrant : 10/26/2021 12:18 pm : link
I like his heart
I like is throwing motion
I like his speed
I like his ability to move out of the pocket

I want to see
More accuracy
More consistent decision making

DJ needs better Oline play and his playmaker to stay healthy

Is he a franchise QB? Unknown for me at this point

The 5th year option is the average of top 10 at that position. The 5th year for a guy like Josh Allen (who was drafted the year before Jones) is 23 mil. So Jones 5th year will probably be around 25 mil.

The option has to be accepted this offseason, and it is fully guaranteed at some point the next offseason. So theoretically, we could pick up the option this offseason, and if he sucks next season, cut him with no cap ramifications.

The option is fully guaranteed when exercised.

That's no longer true. Beginning with 2018 draftees, the 5th year option is fully guaranteed the moment it is exercised.
Still not sold…
trueblueinpw : 10/26/2021 12:51 pm : link
He’s got the work ethic and he’s tough as a $2 steak. There’s just no debating these are qualities DJ has in abundance. But, I still think he’s a QB that needs everything to be right around and him and the problem with that is things are not often right the NFL.

I will say, he’s having a better season. But the problem even here is that the biggest this season was the Cowboys and he wasn’t able to finish that game. There’s also the matter of the TDs, or lack thereof.
Granted I was a lot younger...
D HOS : 10/26/2021 12:53 pm : link
More impatient, less compassionate... but when Dave Brown was our QB, I disliked his selection, disliked him as a player on my team, was thrilled to see him go. For a while I even believed that I disliked him as a person, though I know now that was immature and foolish, I don't know him as a person. In fact after seeing his recent interview, I kind of like him now.

Anyway, Jones, total opposite. No matter what happens with Jones I will like him a lot as a player and a person. I agree, he's "my guy" no matter what.
Im in he Love Him But Not Sold camp
j_rud : 10/26/2021 12:59 pm : link
He's easy to root for and has all the intangibles you want. While I think the organization is complicit in his struggles I have no idea to what extent and I'm not even sure how you'd measure that.

Hopefully he puts together a good season and removes all doubt because he's an easy guy to like and ultimately it's what would be best for the franchise. Whoever is tapped to clean up Gettlemans mess has their work cut out for them, having the QB in place would obviously put them a solid year or two ahead of schedule.
I am a Jones believer now
Jay on the Island : 10/26/2021 2:56 pm : link
I had my doubts last year but he has improved in the areas I had hoped and I believe that he will play consistently like he did versus the Saints if the offensive line improves. The line doesn’t need to be dominant like the Cowboys they just need to be above average and Jones will thrive.

And if we decide to not exercise it?

Jones plays QB in 2022 and then would become a FA in the 2023 FA period?

And we'd be able to extend him to a more friendly deal, at anytime before then?

He seems like a good kid & is-from all accounts-a hard worker. That said, I am still have no clue if he's the long term answer @ QB. If I had to guess, I would state he isn't, but I hope I'm wrong because it'd suck to go look for another long term answer & I want him to succeed.
I need to see the rest of the season, but he's getting there
PatersonPlank : 10/26/2021 7:24 pm : link
Below is cut from Sy's game report:

Daniel Jones: 23/33 – 203 yards / 1 TD / 0 INT / 95.9 RAT

Jones also added 28 yards on 8 carries and caught a pass for 16 yards. So, 247 total yards with a score. Jones responded very well coming off last week’s debacle against the Rams. This is now the 5th game out of 7 (including vs DAL where he only played a half) where Jones finished with a QB rating over 90. He protected the ball, went through his reads well, and made some tough plays with his legs. Jones was without 3 of his top 4 receivers, his top running back, and multiple starting offensive linemen. Only Dante Pettis was getting plus-separation all afternoon, yet he still completed nearly 70% of his passes. Really solid effort full of good decisions in a tough situation.
I hope he blossums this year
US1 Giants : 10/26/2021 7:32 pm : link
Not a believer yet. Needs to string games together. Want to see a good productive 2-minute offense from him in multiple games. Not sure he is worth the money QB get after their rookie contract. Hope he proves himself.
