Immanuel Quickley stared at the court. In front of him stood his new teammates, his new coaches. Excitement welled up inside him. It was his first practice as an NBA player—as a New York Knick. Quickley had dreamed of being here ever since he was a fifth-grader playing rec ball, back when his mother and coach, Nitrease, told him to take it easy on the other kids. “I’m going to need you to not take the ball from them,” she told him one game during a timeout. Quickley returned to the court and snatched the ball from the player he was guarding. He was just as persistent that fall afternoon in 2020, as his first Knicks practice began. The coaches quickly divided up players for teams. But when they got to Quickley, they handed him a green-colored jersey, which signified that he would be relegated to the third—and potentially even fourth—practice squad. Green? Really? |
I have no ill will towards the 76ers, Phillies, or Flyers. Obviously I'm leaving one team out...:-)
& I personally like Embiid. He's a tremendous talent-when healthy-& seems to give a damn on a night to night basis.
Or when he brings it up he immediately dishes and goes to the corner, right now he is shooting the 3 well so that is a positive but it will be an adjustment for him..
Fournier and Randle already have a 2 man game and Fournier can crrate for himself, i think his adjustment is the easiest because he is used to playing off the ball and is comfortable doing it..
Rj i think has the biggest adjustment, he has to realize that he has to wait for the game to come to him, when he has the open shot take it, dont hesitste, but stop dribbling into 3 people and forcing. If the defense collapses pass it out, this is where he becomes a robot, he stsrts to drive he puts his head down and forces up a bad shot..
Randle needs to learn he has more options on offense, if your shot is off, it is ok to facilitate for others and get them in the game. He needs to lesrn that aspect of being the stsr, at the stsrt of games get the others involved and get them going before he takes over
Yep
Yikes. Let's end that shit tonight.
Burks needs to step up his game btw. I wouldn't mind giving Grimes an opportunity to earn some of those minutes.
I’m excited to see how a bulked up Mitch fares against Embiid. Just be a fun watch
Mitch can’t go for all his fakes.
The texts last season during 76ers-Cs game...EVERY other was along the lines of, 'WTF? How was that called a foul? Embiid gets treated with kid gloves.'

Better pray they are hitting their shots because they would get destroyed on the boards

Yeah, Mitch can't afford to get in foul trouble...which I worry about because Embiid, as noted above, gets a ton of calls. Some deserved, some completely UFB like.

I'd be pretty surprised if he didn't get into foul trouble. Hopefully Gibson can hold his own.
Morey has always been a star chaser. He’s probably dead serious because I can’t ever see him being the one to give up a star without getting one back. His ego won’t allow it.
Quote:
Speaking of 76ers, I laughed when I heard Morey go on Philly radio & tell their fans this could go on for 4 years, the length of Simmons' contract. Haha. That'd be both extremely amusing & odd.

Yep. He's terrified of trading Simmons and not having the ammo to get Dame or whoever the next star is that becomes available. Should've just ponied up and put Maxey in the Harden deal and now it seems like he's overplaying his hand as this goes on. Although he's pulled a rabbit out of his ass before (Chris Paul deal) so who knows.
he needs to stay just spotting up
off to a terrible start yeah 2 3s but 4 turnovers
Imagine pr8me rose with this shooting Rose.

He's trying to do too much.
It’s a little depressing to even think about - better luck with injuries and he would’ve been a Legend with a capital L.
Playing but banged up.

Devastating injury. D-Rose was never the same. And I think that Bulls team could have taken Miami that spring. Remember, the aging Cs pushed the Heat to 7 in the ECF.

Makes you wonder how the NBA landscape changes with a healthy rose that doesn't get hurt.
They desperately miss him especially on defense.
Let me watch luka and jalen green.
Maybe, but they dont have a point guard, you are basically running the offense through Embiid and hope he makes the right pass..
Curry is a shooter not a distributor, Harris is a scorer not a point forward, Maxey is a scorer, they dont have a distributor
A lot of people seemed to forget post-playoff mess that Simmons might be the best perimeter defender in the league
It would be extremely difficult to win a title with Simmons as your second best player but without him Philly is just not the same team.
Yeah. He is complete liability on offense, but he is a beast on defense.
Quote:
Simmons on defensive end.

I don’t think anyone forgets that. The problem people have with him is that’s just not enough when you’re the 2nd best player on a team. This is a scoring league. It’s next to impossible to have you’re second best player, and MAX player be a complete liability shooting the ball and expect to win a championship. Everyone is well aware of his defense. But it’s tough to pay a guy the max to be a defensive wiz. That’s the issue
In hindsight, 76ers shoulda kept Butler and jettisoned Simmons.

which is part if the reason why embiid hates simmons
Knicks bench should dominate but the Bulls look like a legit 6 seed, IMO
That was so frustrating how careless he was with the basketball on that one play in transition toward the end of the 3rd quarter. Like you almost lose it once, Rose saves it and gives it back to you, and you’re immediately reckless with the ball again and lose it. Secure the fucking basketball, you can’t score if you turn it over
Just stupid.

I hate stupid basketball, and it seems like he constantly plays stupid basketball, i dont care if you miss, but stop dribbling aimlessly, you are going nowhere..
Just stupid.
such a stupid player
Lovely that he has other guys to lean on now.

We saw what Kemba can do when he's having a good night. Knicks are actually a very tough team to beat when Kemba plays well because you know Rose will also play well so that's the point guard taken care of
Will be bjg to get a win on their homecourt, will be an interesting matchup, who guards randle for them
I was waiting all game long for that run by the Sixers to make it close. I basically had it in my head if we could just be up by 25 going into the 4th we’d be okay lol. When we were only up like 19 I was sweating it out the whole 4th

Knicks bench can have their way against Chicago’s. The bulls basically rely on their 4 best players to do everything offensively. Grinding them down is the key.

Can the Knicks guards keep up with Lavine and Lonzo. If they can, they're in good shape. If they can't it could be a long night

The Knicks are starting to remind me a little bit of Utah last year in terms of shooting the threes, the defense and the depth
Excellent comparison, and I’d like to think Walt Perrin (assistant GM formerly of Utah) has something to do with that.
How does Derozan and Ball do off the ball with Lavine creating..
Will be an interesting early season matchup

I was gonna say everyone is giving the Bulls so much credit already. I think everyone was just ready to give them props because so many picked them to be a contender in the East this year. But look at who they've played... the Cade-less Pistons twice, the Zion-less Pelicans, and they were a missed 3 away from going to OT with the Raptors.
I'm not sold on the Bulls yet, but that's also because I'm one of the ones that wasn't sold on them as offseason champs. My thought is: when has Lonzo ever suddenly turned a team into a contender? And really the same can be said about Derozan, but Lonzo especially hasn't accomplished anything in this league yet despite all the hype about him. So far it's all just been speculation and potential: talking about "if you just get him in the right situation, if you just use him like this or that, if he could just improve x y z part of his game, etc."... He's been in the league for like 5 years now and honestly hasn't done anything. I know I sound like a Lonzo-hater but I'm just saying they hype about him this past offseason was crazy to me. Let's see how this really pans out. Also he talked shit about Nas and Illmatic not being a classic album so technically he should've been disqualified from every possibly being on the Knicks anyway lol.
After 4 games, a few things that have stood out to me:
- Mitch Robinson is significantly improved. He is a real presence out there defensively, and has rebounded the ball much better than in the past. I don't even think he is in shape condition wise yet, so we may even see more from him as the year goes on. Yeah he is still limited offensively, but as long as he can stay healthy I think extending him is a no brainer.
- Besides Mitch, I think Obi Toppin is clearly the most improved player on the team. The knock on him out of Dayton was that he was a total zero on defense, but he has actually been respectable on that end of the court. He also bring awesome energy to the second unit, and is almost unstoppable on the break.
- It really feels like Kemba and RJ are still trying to figure out their roles within the first unit. Randle obviously is going to get his, Fournier seems to have already found where to fit in, but Walker and Barrett have been pretty hesitant. It was great to see Walker take over for a bit last night, but in general I have been a little surprised at how passively he has played. As for Barrett, he just seems timid out there, like he is playing to avoid mistakes but then is making them because he is thinking and not reacting. It will be interesting to watch to see how these two settle in over the next few weeks.
- Also, Julius Randle is a beast. Legit star player that will be in the conversation for All-NBA again.
Last night Randle didnt shoot well at all but of course he rebounded and dished..
Rj didnt play well at all, had a couple of 3s and a couple kf drives but nothing great..
Kemba in the first 3 games didnt really do much at all..
When this team puts it all together they can be a dangerous team, Kemba can do this consistently which is yet to be seen but man this team will be tough to beat..
and what i was most impressed eith last night? they played faster and they still held Philly under 100 and Philly looked gassed, thr Knicks steam rolled them in the 2nd quarter
They’re not close to being a contender but I think they can give anyone a series. They’re fun to watch for the fire time since Rose/Butler played.
5th in Net Rating (+10.9)
2nd in Offense (116.3)
11th in Defense (105.4)
So, a very good morning to you, fan of a good-to-very-good basketball team.

Really good post and agree with everything. I was hard on Toppin this year but its been great to see him so improved. Hopefully he keeps improving.
Mitch has been outstanding. His added weight has definitely helped and he hasn't lost his bounce. He has been tremendous as a rim protector and rebounder. Next step is showing a little offense but he's been great.
Derrick Rose has been really great for the Knicks. What a trade last year for him and cool to see him revive his career here. He is an elite backup point guard and will definitely be in contention for 6th man of the year.
Love having Thibs here- just a great head coach and puts his team in position to win every night.
Thibs will scream at him for stupid plays, but RJ is resilient. I do wonder, though, whether we might see a little of Fornier at the 3, with Quickley coming in at the 2. Later on, we may see some of Grimes at the backup 2, with Fornier playing a little 3 alongside him. That way, we would still have a strong wing defender in Grimes, and he can clearly shoot as well, and even rebound a little. And, Fornier is a really strong offensive player.
Btw, what Thibs is giving Toppin is "tough love." I doubt that he would yell at him so much if he didn't see a real player in there. Toppin hasn't gotten his 3 stroke back yet, but I think that it is likely that he does. He keeps shooting 3's that are just barely off.
This team is good. I have a theory or take that the starting rotation is better suited for playoff success than last year's team, but the bench will get us a higher seed to get there. This bench is so built for the regular season, in a good way. Bad teams or thin benches will really struggle. Tired teams are doomed.
Don’t think this is even close either. This years lineup with Kemba, Fournier and healthy Mitch has a chance of beating the Hawks last years

There was a play early Embiid tried to body Mitch and Mitch said nope and held his ground, it set the tone for the entire night..
I only remember a couple of times Embiid got all the way to the rim..
He is an energizer, the second he comes in with Rose the speed picks up, he gets the team easy baskets..
The Sixers were gassed after having to deal eith the Knicks bench
Speaking of working on inside game, funny thing my son and I watched when we arrived early at the Amway center for the game last Fri. We were on the side where the Magic warmed up and we watched some individual shooting.
Robin Lopez was taking little hook shots from about 3 ft from the hoop. Someone was feeding him and he missed shot after shot after shot; from 3 ft! At one point I said to my son, is he trying to miss? I mean, is that a thing, these days?
When he finally made one, he shook his head and had a look of relief. We were like, WTH? I guess being 7' will keep you in the league a while.
The bench is going to be the difference in some games this year.
Randle has to take some of the open shots he is getting, he is passing up wide open looks then dribbles and takes a tougher shot..He is still adjusting to playing with guys getting him wide upen looks
The bench is going to be the difference in some games this year.
The 2 seed team a few years ago was probably their last good bench and is probably not even close to this one.

Wrong thread sorry guys!
And I remember later thinking it would be nice if guys like John Starks (would've been a nice 6th man) and Charlie Ward (as just a couple examples) were coming off the bench instead of being depended on so heavily as starters.
Ewing would've won a title if he had this supporting cast.
Maybe its just me but Obi looks taller, stronger and just more fit this year.
I'm not advocating for this by any means because this team has been really enjoyable to watch, but this team is in a great spot to trade for star for many reasons. Multiple good players on rookie deals, multiple affordable good contracts, extra 1st round picks, and a destination city with a good playoff team.
Just an incredible turnaround in 2 seasons. What was the Vegas over/ under last season for the Knicks? I am already kicking myself for not taking the over this year at 41...

I mean is it really that big of a story?

I mean the Knicks are filling at 86% with a Sunday night game and a game in a rain storm. The get in price is also double the nets.
I mean is it really that big of a story?
Also offices aren’t fully back and the Knicks rely a lot on the corporate group for attendance.

yup very good point
Yeah it's wild. He's a bench player only because of injury history/minutes restrictions - he's still an All-Star caliber player otherwise. This is the role Melo should've embraced sooner - lighting up second units for 25 minutes per night.
Also is there anything more dumb than Evan Roberts calling the barclays "the clays"
I couldn't stand him as a player (or a person) his first time around in NY. But now I've done a complete 180 on him. I can't think of another player like that for any of the teams I root for.
Pleasantly surprised to see them enforcing this. Next step is to enforce it in the playoffs too.
They aren't good.
it makes him an average basketball player, he is barely going to the rim at this point
Lakers were up 26
