We're not great but the WRs are a legit strength

BestFeature : 10/26/2021 4:43 pm
I doubt there are many teams that have a guy like Slayton as a #4. I think we have legit depth there. Too bad they're never healthy. Honestly, if the O-line wasn't decimated, I think it would be league average or at least not far below average. Unfortunately no line where Nate Solder starts would ever be truly good. But given the weapons, I think the O would be pretty good. Unfortunately we still have Garrett.
I really liked what I saw from Pettis. I think, given the chance, he

Cant be considered a strength

if the unit hasn't been together for a single game. Health is a huge issue right now and likely will be given the histories of guys like Golladay, Shep, and Slayton.

Pettis was a bright spot over the final two games last year so I was very disappointed that he didn’t make the initial 53 man roster but I’m glad another team didn’t poach him from the PS.

He played well last week so I look forward to seeing what he does over the remainder of the year. With Board out I hope that Pettis becomes the primary kick returner.
I wonder what Pettis does or doesn't do

Monday through Saturday because everytime he has a chance on Sundays he looks pretty productive.
Legit strength?
Thunderstruck27 : 10/26/2021 4:59 pm : link
Pettis was the only WR that could get any separation and he has been on the practice squad all year. Rarely do any of the receivers make a play with the ball in their hands...YAC might as well be a mammal in the Himalayas. There is something deeply flawed with this offense.

No way he can over take a healthy Shep. A healthy Shep is a stud. Like on pace for over 100 catches, 1500 yards good. Pettis on his best day wouldn't be that.

I think we are actually top 10 in terms of weapons honestly. Golladay, Toney, Shep, Barkley, Engram, Slayton... those are some legit players. They just haven't been healthy and on the field together for one whole game. I would love to see just one game with everyone healthy especially Thomas who makes the most difference IMO.

Makes you wonder. Obviously coaches see things we fans don’t. But I too was disappointed that he wasn’t given a chance earlier.

I like him better than Slayton, but what do I know.

Does Toney not exist in your universe? And that's a legit argument against Shepard but Golladay is a contested catch guy like Plax, not some shifty YAC guy.

I'm not sure about "stud", but a healthy Shep is a very good player. He's a pretty high bar for Pettis to hit. I like Pettis a lot, and was disappointed he didn't make the opening day roster. This is his big chance, let's see if he makes the most of it. It certainly seems like he and DJ have a bit of chemistry.

Toney had been out more than he is in...but yeah...he's the only guy I've seen all year do something with the ball in his hands for what? Barely 2 games? Plax made plenty of plays after the catch and also got open. I like Golladay but he's always hurt and never gets open. Being on the bench isn't a legit strength
Shep is a very talented possession WR

whom can't seem to stay healthy. It would not surprise me to see the team move on from him before the 2022 season. Hopefully they can get something in return.

You are correct... Overstated it with Stud hahaha. He is good and amazing at getting open.

Shep in week 1 had a big play and got into the endzone. Golladay has broken a few tackles but hasn't scored a TD yet. But you said it...most importantly these guys can't stay on the field. Availability...best ability, and all that. I do think we are relatively deep without a huge talent dropoff at WR. I just don't think we are super talented at the position. Toney does look promising though.

You're right, I was a bit dramatic with that. But it seems literally any positive thread is met with "you're not allowed to have any positive thoughts about this team" type posts. But them being injury prone should in fact be taken into account.

In an ideal world, i.e. where all of them are 100%, I tend to think the unit is the strongest on the team with Shep, KG, KT, Darius, etc. The problem is it seems none of them can stay on the field.
I agree
mattlawson : 10/26/2021 8:26 pm : link
Which makes the red zone production even more maddening. There’s a lot of depth here. Rudolph finally had one but that’s and engram play. Rudolph should be mirroring Gronk. Chipping and then posting up in the Middle for a TD. It still appears like the coaching staff does not want to play to our guys strengths and insist on being cute
I'll grant you

The guys the Giants have on IR are impressive.

The guys on the field, less so.

Pettis will not overtake Slayton and Shep. Pettis is not a burner but is plenty fast, runs good routes, knows how to get open and moves very well with the ball. He is the perfect "in between" guy. He may overtake Ross who is more one dimensional. Think about it this way while Golladay and Toney are out: Shep in the slot with Slayton and Pettis outside or Shep in the slot with Slayton and Ross outside? Which of those combos do you think is more difficult to cover to move the chains in first and second downs? Easily Shep, Slayton and Pettis. Third down? Ross/Pettis depending on the yardage needed and deep coverage. Obviously on a deep shot it's Ross and Slayton outside with Shep inside. Schemed right, that last one is a killer. With the right OL protection one of those guys will break the defense's back. Not to mention that Jones seems completely comfortable with each of them.

Admit, that's odd. Why isn't Garrett sending Rudolph over the middle in the end zone as a primary or distraction? The Giants have Shep, Pettis and Engram who can make plays outside and in the corners.

Stop! Shep is a seasoned vet that catches 6 balls a game. He's a team first guy and has done EVERYTHING right. It's embarrassing to compare a guy with a handful of catches to him...
