I watched Boomer and Gio a few weeks ago and it was mentioned. Is there any real talk of it in the NYC area? I'm in the DC area and don't get any NYG talk here.
Didn't the Giants have grass for a relatively short period of time
I don't think grass is possible with two teams playing in the same stadium. I know it seems like there is a lot of injuries in the stadium but do we have hard data there is more injuries per game played then elsewhere?
This isn't the old astroturf that people used. I've read players like it better than grass. Personally I don't think this has an bearing on the injuries
Wasn't there a thread on this same topic two or three weeks ago?
it as well. IIRC they had individual trays of grass that they could replace. It did not hold up well and only lasted like 3 years. Also, with Thursday night games now you have more potential for the Giants and Jets to play home on the same week. I don't see how a grass field could hold up.
but we can probably terraform Mars. Hope I am alive to see it. That will happen before Mara and Jetsies pony up for real grass and landscaping. I can relate those fuckers aint cheap.
They used a tray system as I recall, so that sections could be replaced as needed. It was awful. Huge chunks of turf would come loose leaving gashes in the field. Maybe the available technology and/or procedures have improved since, but it was a complete failure.

I can tell you there were times when I played on grass that if my foot or leg was trapped and I was playing on turf I probably would have come down with a catastrophic injury.
Grass gives way...Turf does not. A divot and some mud small price to pay IMHO.
RE: Didn't the Giants have grass for a relatively short period of time
during the Kerry Collins years? Possibly the year we lost to the Ravens in the Super Bowl.
I think it's unlikely, as I don't remember that holding up that well.
Yes, that's correct.
Was a brief period of grass.
Ravens just went to grass recently.
Two other stadiums that changed surfaces were Soldier Field and Candlestick Park....both were turf in the '70s, and I think Soldier Field into the '80s as well.

Grass technology has improved over the years so you're seeing teams like the Ravens move back to grass, hopefully the Giants are next. Most of the new stadium are grass as well- Vegas, LA, San Fran, etc. If grass can hold up in Chicago, Philly, Pittsburgh, Green Bay, and Cleveland, I see no reason it couldn't work for the Giants

Was it really awful? I distinctively remember the 2000 team playing on painted mud and winning home playoff games while guys weren’t getting hurt. Couldn’t have been that bad.
And the Metlife uses the same field turf that half the league uses.
Boomer must be misinformed because he has stated that the turf used at Metlife is not the same used anywhere else in the league.
Boomer is wrong. There was a time when MetLife was the only NFL team with Act Global turf but they switched to FieldTurf in 2020, which many NFL fields use. Now only the Vikings' stadium has Act Global but both are widely used for different sports at many levels.
I really do believe the turf creates more injuries. You’re playing “in” the turf vs. playing “on” the grass. A sharp plant in grass and the dirt gives way, a sharp plant in turf and your knee gives way.
I played on grass in high school and turf in college. I much preferred grass.

Answered my own question - see the archived thread below.

Yes there is talk of grass
Yes it was tried at Giants Stadium and didn’t work.
our owners are cheap and boring so I don't doubt it. the stadium is the boringest of all the nfl. its like going to the airport or something.

No?

This is funny to me as the Giants have probably lost out on more money due to injuries caused from their garbage field turf.

Giants’ Logan Ryan: Turf field causing too many injuries - ( New Window )
I would prefer grass, but I do think that two teams using a grass field would just destroy it and make it more dangerous.
