NFT: So i had a Kidney Stone

GMAN4LIFE : 10/27/2021 3:49 pm
Sunday Night... get out of the shower and bamm. My right side starts hurting. I thought my appendix was the issue. I go to the hospital in alot of pain. Doctor says.. "ever had kidney stones before". i say nope. turns out it was. 2mm. Funny thing was other people were in the ER for it as well.

Monday was horrible. intermittent moments of ok pain to "holy fuck" pain. Took some motrin and then at night a perc to sleep. Drank a shit ton of water. im talking alot of water.

Tuesday, woke up with no pain. no issues. but still drinking water to push this fucker out. Peeing in a strainer is so dumb but it had to be done. at night, out comes this little pencil lead tip. that small fucking thing sent me to the hospital.

Now i ask. I have an appointment with the urologist to go over what happened and to give them to stone to see which one it is. But alot of people said, once you have one, you are prone for having more. Were you or someone you knew of that didnt have it ever again? As in it was a one and done.

just checking and yes i know the doc will answer but looking for some hope thats all lol
I had one once....
beechbouy : 10/27/2021 3:56 pm : link
then had about another 2 dozen over the next 15 years (just passed my second one this year on Tuesday). Calcium/oxalate stones. Various prescriptions have made virtually no difference as best I can determine. I've had three laser lithotripsies over the years at well. Nothing seems to slow them down. Beyond brutal.
I get stones
KDubbs : 10/27/2021 3:58 pm : link
I have heard horror stories but thankfully I havent had that. The first time I had trouble going and after a few hours I was pale white but it finally came out. It was probably the biggest one I have had. I get small ones because my body produces too much calcium but I cant stop eating/drinking stuff with calcium. If I ever get 1 that I gotta go to the hospital then maybe I'll stop.
I had one in 2009. Never since.
Heisenberg : 10/27/2021 3:58 pm : link
it was small though.
Consider dietary changes
DC Gmen Fan : 10/27/2021 4:03 pm : link
Foods high in oxalates contribute to those types of stones:
-almonds
-spinach
-raspberries
-nuts/nut butters

If oxalates are the issue, aim for high calcium/low sodium diet as calcium bonds to the oxalates. And yes water water water.

There are a couple great Docs at Johns Hopkins and GWU who deal specifically with stones. Check them out.
Here's a cool tool

walks into a bar and the bartender says "Can I get you a drink"?

"No thanks" says the kidney stone, "I'm just passing through"

Similar experience to yours. I was told by my doctor that genetics play a part (my mom had had one), and that someone who's had one is more likely to have another than someone who hasn't. I was basically told to drink a shitload of water. And improve my diet. That was a wake up call. Since then I drink a ton of water and moved to a completely vegetarian diet. Feel great and haven't had any issues since.

There's nothing like the feeling of having to take the worst piss of your life and not being able to squeeze out a drop. Wow.
Do you by chance do keto?

3 people I know do keto and they've all had stones.

Had my first one this past summer...

Year and a half ago, same deal as the OP.

Thought my appendix was gonna blow. Drove to the hospital (yes, driving while lying down IS possible) at about 5 am and walking from the lot to the ER, had to stop and vomit. Got inside. Check-in, nearby nurses, everybody is nonchalant ... ohhhh, you have a stone. Sign here.

The moderately helpful thing was that all the females there said they had sympathy. One even said she thought it was the only pain comparable to giving birth.

Eleven days. ELEVEN fuckin g days later. It either dissipated or passed. Had some pretty decent meds, and worked most of the days, but goddamn, that non-medicated time ... fuck all ...

Really hopeful I don't ever have to go through that again.

Been told (and have followed the advice) that lemon/lime juice helps ... stay hydrated AF, too. Also, apple-cider vinegar shots when you can handle it.
Six MM. Jesus.

I had Kidney stones for years
Mine were do to calcium build up

Despite my best efforts the stones kept reoccurring

I tried taking apple cider vinegar , fluids including diet coke, I altered my diet eliminating fats but to no avail

Then I lost a lot of weight and started drinking copious amounts of water and all of the sudden the stones started to dissipate

I don't know why the stones stopped but I am not complaining

I had my first kidney stone at about 45 years of age
JonnyR : 10/27/2021 4:37 pm : link
Had another 6 months later.
Had yet another 6 months after that.
I cleaned up my diet and, in particular, started drinking much more water and haven't had any more in the 10 years since.
Good luck!
Had 2 in my life.
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 10/27/2021 4:39 pm : link
I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. Drink lots of aqua.
I have them
Anakim : 10/27/2021 4:42 pm : link
I've had them for years. Had a lithotripsy a few years ago and ended up pissing out sand.

Never passed one and they've never bothered me. They're just lying dormant in my kidneys, but I have to get a sonogram every year to monitor them.
I still take Potassium Citrate on a daily basis

Mine felt like i threw my back out, got kicked in the nuts and had the worst gas pain of my life all while a hat pin was slowly being driven through my kidney. Did the driving and throwing up thing, too. Barfing actually helped for some reason.
This happened twice in 24 hours. Once while at work. I went into the gym in my office and fell onto the floor. Crawled into what turned out to be the lactation room where, while laying fetal and groaning on the floor, was reminded by a delightful young see you next tuesday that the room was only for mothers. She never asked me if I was OK.
I had one hit while I was in the kitchen talking to my daughter
montanagiant : 10/27/2021 5:30 pm : link
Felt like someone knifed me in my left lower back. My wife ran me to emergency (I thought I was dying) and while there I just started pissing blood. They gave me some stuff that did nothing for the pain but then they gave me Dilaudid via IV.

That stuff almost made me wish for another kidney stone it felt so good.

I can eat meat. Just don't want to anymore and don't miss it. Sort of like watching Jones play. 🙂

I have had at least 5 kidney stones over the years. The early ones were Uric Acid Stones - unbearable pain, vomiting, etc. until they passed. The good news is that taking Allopurinol has basically ended the uric acid variety. However, I also began to develop Calcium Oxalate stones - wicked, crystal-like stones. Probably 8 years since I passed my last one. This past summer, I had an abdominal scan for another issue and was told coincidentally that I had a very large stone lurking in my right kidney - 7MM+ and if it ever dislodged, they would, in the words of my internist, have to "do a C Section on me to get it out". It was too big and hard to pulverize and I probably wouldn't be able to pass it. Long story short, this past Thursday, I had a ureteroscopy to remove it. This consists of a tube inserted (you know where) up through the bladder and into the kidney. The stone was then lasered and captured, along with 2 others. A stent was put in to allow for debris to exit. Upon waking (done under general anesthesia) the pain was bad when I urinated and it was basically blood. After pain killers, I went home to rehab. I'm now 6 days in and my urine has finally mostly cleared up (very disconcerting and frightening to pee red) but urination is still painful in my kidney. Scheduled to have the stent removed next Friday - oh what fun! Can't wait. Moral of the story - there's no preventative medication if you produce Calcium Oxalate stones - just drink a lot and watch your diet. However, if you do have a tendency, get scanned periodically to make sure you don't have a stone too big to pulverize. You really don't want to have to get a ureteroscopy - I wouldn't wish this even on a Cowboys or Eagles fan. Thanks for listening, my BBI brothers and sisters in pain!

But I remember watching 24 on Fox (Kiefer Sutherland), then like as soon as the show ended, the pain ensued. Has to get a referral for the urologist. Dude gave me some pain killers..instructed me to crush water and Gatorade. I can still remember the feeling with that little bitch finally passed..it was glorious.

Then none for over 8 years now (knock on wood). My urologist told me 90% of people have stones and will never know it. They only become a problem when they drop and block either the urethra or bile duct which most never do. I have 3 more but never caused a problem. The 2 I had were 3mm, which I had to pass naturally and the 2nd was 5mm which was crushed. Funny thing is the one I passed naturally I barely felt. The one that was crushed hurt more because of the jagged edges from being crushed.
Thank God for dilaudid! Takes pain that brings you to your knees and makes it ALMOST painless. Much stronger than morphine which barely dulled the pain 1st time.

Urologist said in men the major cause of stones is not necessarily heredity but dehydration. I know drink 4-5 17oz bottles of water each day ( Dr. recommended 6-7!)
Once in 1990, none since

I have had 2 in my life 25 years apart.
The last one I got up at 4am and told my wife we need to go to the ER.
She asked me how I knew it was a kidney stone and told her, I never forgot that pain.
Long story short my x-rays showed a mass on my kidney turned out to be cancer.
It was caught in a very early stage and was cut out.
The kidney stone probably saved my life.

I had over 20 kidney stone attacks from both kidneys. As you all know, the pain was excruciating especially at the end stage of each attack. These occurred at home, when traveling, on vacations and at work, and would last anywhere from 15 to 20 hours. My stones were. calcium based Then, in 1986, a urologist analyzed my blood and determined that it was low on potassium, a substance which dissipates calcium and calcium-based kidney stones. I have been taking six potassium citrate pills each day since then and have had just one attack-- in 1999.
I remember walking in the emergency room and the reception

but I got my first one the same night after attending the desean Jackson punt return game in 2010. It was the worst day of my life.

I’ve had 3 I think total. They all suck. I was at work when I had one and my wife had to get me and bring me to hospital-on the way, the pain went away completely. It’s very frustrating. The last one I had, they gave me some pill to help me pee and said don’t take it until evening time. I was in horrible pain all Sunday, literally just sat in bed all day, and it took this pill early evening and the pain was gone and it passed immediately. I wish I knew I would have taken it early and not been knocked out all day.

Spent the night in the hospital. 2nd one I new right away what it was and went straight to the ER. After a dose of dilaudid was able to relax and pass it. Went to work the next morning like nothing had happened.

Snake oil. There is zero medical evidence that it works. Also sold as "stone breaker". But some people swear it works because they passed a stone when they took it. As I like to tell them, "correlation is not causation" - not that it does any good.
