The Ravens released Le'Veon Bell

shadow_spinner0 : 11/17/2021 9:59 am
Just goes to show that we really should not break bank for Saquon extension, I'm happy to keep him, but even one of the most recently prolific RB is now washed up at 29. His last good year was 2017 when he was 25, which is same age as Barkleys contract year next year.

On another note, why is the RB position having far less shelf life than in previous decades? In the 90's great RB's could have around 10 years of success. Now it seems a peak lasts a few years and they suck again. Guys like Gurley is washed, Barkley seems to be heading in that direction, Bell is washed, CMC is always injured and Zeke seems to be in a decline.
His downfall

is crazy. He was at a Hall of Fame level with the Steelers IMO. Almost a perfect back.

I didn't know he was with Baltimore

than any other position group of players by the collective bargaining agreement in the NFL.

They should be allowed to operate outside the draft slot, pay laws since their shelf-life is so short.
He took a year off

when holding out on contract. He was never the same. Not sure if it was related.
His game was patience and smarts

with just enough wiggle and quicks to be effective. When the latter left him, he was toast. His legs must have been done.

This is why the Steelers let him go, btw. They knew, they didn't hand him the big extension out of loyalty. He probably knew too, so the reality of not seeing the monster extension probably created the monster at the time.

He still earned $45M in the NFL in total.

I'd argue the NFL is littered with a lot of medicore to bad RB's that can't learn the NFL game. Its why there are so many specialists and split (sometimes 3 ways) backfields.

The good RB's stay good for the most part, problem is there aren't many good ones. Bell is an outlier, he didn't want to put in the work anymore, and completely botched the 2nd half of his career with questionable business decisions.

yep.

Very thin line between average, good, and great.

Early Bell had plus ability to line up the play patiently, and explode with burst, even if he wasn’t the fastest. He doesn’t have that now — patience without burst just means tackled.

Running back is a tough gig. The only guy drafted after 2010 who’s sniffing 10K ground yards and on track to be mentioned with the greats is Elliot.
Don't become enamored with running backs. If you have a decent

one, wear him out as much as possible while young and strong. Any reasonable signs of decline, move along asap and look for another one...
Bell was a system RB that fit perfectly with the Steelers

and their stud OL.

Just another example of how football is a team sport.
Tiki was getting better

as he aged. But he also played behind an excellent oline.
There shelf life is short because coaches overuse them

Check any RB's production after a year with 250 carries, or two straight years with 200+ carries. They almost always have sub-standard years.

It's the very rare exception that can continue to perform after that much work. Derrick Henry was great in 2020 after a 300+ carry season but broke down this year.

Never liked him really
Aaroninma : 11/17/2021 12:46 pm : link
Thought he was really soft. Tough teams could really beat him up. Looked for the ground a lot.

Tiki's last year was 2006.

15 years is a lifetime in the NFL and Tiki aged well through crazy hard work to transform his body and because when he was young he had very low mileage.

Only a completely idiotic team would give Barkley a 2nd contract at the top of the market. Just another reason why GM fresh eyes with no ties to former draft picks and enough force of personality to push the Mara's to the side a little bit is needed.
Not giving Bell the huge contract he wanted
Mike from Ohio : 11/17/2021 1:19 pm : link
was the absolute right decision by the Steelers. The Giants would be smart to follow the same path with Barkley.

System RB? He was just a great overall back during that time. Great pass blocker, pass catcher and runner. A truly complete back. Having all those traits is very rare.
Maybe we should let Tiki back in the building
Spiciest Memelord : 11/17/2021 2:39 pm : link
to teach Barkley his workout regimen.
so we're gonna use Bell as the benchmark and template

what about a guy like Zeke?

Zeke could just be a product of the OL, great OL great numbers, shitty OL average numbers last season. Good OL again this season good numbers

He's in completely different shape this year. They also have their QB back. When Andy Dalton is throwing focusing on shutting down the run game makes sense. He's a very good RB.

Zeke is a significantly better player than Barkley. And I still wouldn't have paid Zeke...I think Dallas would be performing at the same level with Pollard at RB.

Drafting RBs high is stupid. Paying them big second contracts is even more stupid.

Barkley is no Tiki
Not in the same zip code

Tiki's off season workouts were the stuff of legend

He ran up and down the Ramapo mountains all summer
Had a personal trainer that had him working out with 1000 lb leg presses

He studied Walter Peyton and Gayle Sayers on film and emulated their patience and talent for following the blocking patterns

Barkley is not a student of the game, goes down with arm tackles, dances like Ron Dayne

Barkley was the greatest draft mistake since Rocky Thompson

He will be back this week this week. Booker will sit
We will likely lose as a result unless the D and Receivers come up big
