Does Tampa Really Have a Psychological Advantage This Week?

Jim in Tampa : 11/17/2021 10:13 am
I keep reading posts in numerous threads about how this is a bad time for the Giants to play Tampa Bay because the ‘Bucs have lost 2 in a row and they will be oh so “angry” coming into the game.

I mean, how can the Giants possibly win a game if all the players on the opposing team are ANGRY?

But there is a psychological flip side to this kind of anger and it’s called “self doubt”.

The fact is that Tampa has lost 2 in a row to inferior teams because they haven’t been playing well. So while losing may make them angry, it likely also makes them a little less confident going into this game.

And if Tampa Bay faces some initial adversity in the Giants game (pick 6, blown coverage by their D, etc.) a collective feeling of “here we go again” may start to creep into the minds of the Bucs’ players.

I’m not saying that the Giants are going to win this game. I just don’t understand why some people automatically believe that the Bucs can’t be beat this week because they’ll be playing “angry”.

Anger may help motivate the Bucs, but losing 2 in a row has to have had some impact on their confidence.
I think the Giants

actually matchup pretty good against the Bucs.

The Giants had a very good chance to beat them last year and I thought last year's NYG team was worse.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this game plays out.
fans tend to manufacture motivation for sports teams / players

Tampa really needs to win the game to stay in the hunt for a 1st round BYE. The Giants really need to win the game as it would really boost their confidence towards a 2nd half run.

Other than that its just people making stuff up.
Not really a psychological advantage. Moreso a point that if

the Bucs took things for granted the last couple weeks, or maybe didn't prepare as well as could have or maybe were just flat, then at some point a quality team "rights the ship"...
Folks said the same thing about the Chiefs
BillT : 11/17/2021 10:38 am : link
Thought that was BS and it was. In the NFL in general I think winning leads to winning and losing leads to losing. So, given neither team has been winning recently I don’t think there is much you can take from that part if the equation.
I fear we'll get Buffalo Billed

but the 11.5 pts or whatever seems a bit too much. So I guess you should bet the numbers and not the narrative...
Better players and coaching

Plays a larger part than psychology.
What is more important is that Tampa is home

Tampa plays better at home they have cruised at home and struggled on the road

Dallas got whacked by Denver

and then destroyed Atlanta.

Bills were upset by Jags and then whacked the Jets.

So, yes, there is something to a good team being upset and coming back the next week and play well.

They will not be overlooking the upcoming opponent. It happens all the time in the NFL.
We can analyze things like this
Biteymax22 : 11/17/2021 11:50 am : link
all we want, but the reality is the Giants need to worry less about the other teams "bringing it" or "not bringing" it and worry more about not making stupid mistakes that costs themselves games.

We've been our own worst enemy this year.

Last time I remember was vs. Cincy and Odell doing the thriller after scoring.

2 losses sandwiched around a bye

could lead to the team questioning itself, but I don't see it. Tampa struggled early last year but were able to put it together.

They'll be ready to play, but that doesn't guarantee them a win.
‘Historical Factors’ Working Against The Giants
Trainmaster : 11/17/2021 1:33 pm : link
1) Poor record in Prime Time games
2) Poor record on Monday Night games
3) Poor record in games coming off bye week
4) Poor record in alternate uniforms

Given the above, the “Football gods” say “Screw historical trends’l, Giants 24, Bucs 23. Gano with last minute 55 yarder for the win!

The rams were supposed to be "mad" about the titans loss then came out and did the same performance against the 49ers.
I don't know about a psychological advantage
Go Terps : 11/17/2021 5:24 pm : link
They do have a talent advantage. A massive talent advantage.
A lot of psychological narrative is BS,
Jerry in_DC : 11/17/2021 8:45 pm : link
but there can be something to it in football. Its not about being angry during the game though- it's about the week of practice and prep.

If you've ever played or been around a team, there's definitely different feels in practice weeks depending on a lot of factors. Those can manifest themselves come game day.

0-7 in primetime games since Eli retired.
Tampa is vulnerable for sure...

Losing road games to Trevor Siemian and Taylor Heinicke tells you the state of their defense. They have given up 65 combined points in those games. And largely because their secondary is in disarray, which is forcing Todd Bowles into some tricky decisions.

Which begs the question? If Siemian and Heineke, both back-up QBs, can have success against the Bucs D - and each of their offenses have issues - shouldn't we expect Jones to have a big performance?

only if you believe that the bucs are going to simply going continue to play bad defense. Do you choose to believe the last two games are the real bucs?

In the 3 games before that they were 3-0, and only allowed a total of 42 points.

Right - will the real Bucs defense please stand up?

Until I see them revert to their defense 3 weeks ago, I'm giving more credibility to what we have seen from the Bucs these last two weeks...

this team has shown no consistency to give me any faith they can pull off wins back to back.

A lot depends how the Giants can run the ball. The Saints scored 36 points (7 coming from the final drive where Brady threw a pick six), but they only had 209 pass yards. Saints ran the ball, played tough defense, and controlled the clock.

WFT did the same thing. Both teams have great playcallers and very good lines, though. It's not an easy task, although Vea being injured is a blessing.

Conclusion? Force Brady into making mistakes. He has five turnovers over the last two games. Giants defense causes a turnover or two, they definitely have a shot. More downfield shots to Toney, Golladay, Barkley, etc. will be nice. Big challenge for Garrett to make a statement.
If you're betting on a football game
Spiciest Memelord : 11/18/2021 12:40 pm : link
you would like the numbers and the intangibles line up, and they are at crosswinds for this game, so best to avoid betting. 11.5 pts is tempting but TB might be playing 'angry' - or the beginning of a out of control spiral? They have accumulated a lot of malcontents.
