Nearly all of the evaluators surveyed believe that Ole Miss QB Matt Corral – who this weekend indicated he plans to enter the draft – would go in the first round, while many felt the same about Pittsburgh's Kenny Pickett and Liberty's Malik Willis. Despite a more difficult than expected year, North Carolina's Sam Howell remains in the first-round conversation, while Nevada's Carson Strong, does as well. Pickett is a senior, while Willis, Howell and Strong are juniors.
Oklahoma's Spencer Rattler, a redshirt sophomore and an early media darling who eventually lost his starting job to freshman Caleb Williams, was not as high in the eyes of the NFL world as he was in the public. And Cincinnati's Desmond Ridder, a senior, has impressed, but most (not all) of the GMs contacted felt he was more of a post-first-round selection. |
In theory, if Jones completely busts out it will be a better situation for a rookie QB in 2023
Brandt was VERY concerned with his hand size and said that will be a problem in the NFL turnover wise.
Even WTF gets this which is why they're riding Heinicke for now.
Disagree Sean. In 19 Giants finally realized what had bee obvious the year before, they were no longer going to win with Eli. “. I for one felt it was almost guaranteed they were going quarterback that draft.
This is a totally different situation. They have a young guy in his third year who many close to the Giants feel certain will be there next season
Well, yes and no.
I believe this considered a pretty darn deep draft class. Looking at the OLs for example, there seem to be a lot of really good ones.
Real Medicare crop. Next year probably Stroud and Young. Much better.

he doesn't see any first round Quarterback talent in this years draft. He said some will be drafted in round 1 but none that he has a first round grade on.

Mediocre. No idea what spell check was thinking.
It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out.
Wait until he tries to throw a bigger NFL ball.
There are QB’s who have first round upside, but trying to find a guy like that who can also start Week 1 I am not sure that exists. Pickett looks like the most pro-ready, but not sure his upside is greater than Tannehill/Cousins
Ridder will be in the discussion...lots of raw talent.
Haven't heard that. Interesting. Definitely something to consider. Goff has smaller than ideal hand size...
Of the 23 other players on the field at any given time, there are probably 5 NFL caliber players.
Jones will do until we have a team for a new QB to lead.
Do you put a lot of weight on hand size for a QB?
Not only is it a bigger ball, but it is super slick. College footballs are supplied by the schools, I believe, and they get a chance to work them over pretty good. I believe NFL game balls are right out of the box. Slippery as hell.
A million years ago I remember Tony Sacca out of Penn State being unable to make the adjustment to the pro ball.

NFL teams, and I believe this was due to campaigning by Manning and Brady, can break in their balls before the games are played on Sunday.
Remember Deflate-gate for example...

Oh good point. That's a good thing, I think.
That happens almost every year. Demand is always enormous. Teams constantly overdraft QBs out of desperation. And in the vast majority of cases, the results are disastrous, or at best mediocre.
Better QBs are available in 2023 so this has to be part of the thought process. If we really want a QB that draft is the one
Then, take another OL with either the 2nd or 3rd round pick and get 2 of them through free agency as well.
We need to purge these scrubs on our offensive line.
Assuming there's no medical or off field concern, he's a good pick with one of those first rounders.

There is some off the field concerns because he hasn’t always been most studious QB. There is a durability concern because his frame is narrow.
In 3 years as a starter he has appeared in all but 2 Ole Miss games (his 2019 games I can’t tell if as a starter or not).
Assuming there's no medical or off field concern, he's a good pick with one of those first rounders.
Corral had issues in high school. They are well documented. He had committed to USC, but changed to Ole Miss to get the hell out of California.
For example, he got in a fight with Wayne Gretzky's kid in high school.

Granted, I’ve only seen him play 2-3 times, but I don’t see the requisite arm strength. A decent athlete, but not great. I see an NFL backup.
Brandt was VERY concerned with his hand size and said that will be a problem in the NFL turnover wise.
Hand size is a myth. Burrow, Mahomes, Jackson and Murray are toward the smaller end of the scale.

Big arm talent, accurate, quick release, mobile, tough, 67% past this year with a 9.4 AY/A and 29 total TDs in the ACC.

That seems thin (in terms of a draft red flag). And getting out of California (if he had issues there) could be seen as a sign of maturity and/or intelligence.
I don't think the guy is the next Elway or anything, but I think he's worth picking.

Agreed. I don’t know of any incidents since leaving high school.

This or BPA. Hopefully OL or Edge is BPA.
Aaron Rodgers or TB12 could not win with this OL.

Doesn't bother me, either. Just citing some of the items.
Corral isn't a reach, that's the point. Targeting positions (like OL and Edge) is how you end up reaching.
I'd rather they target players, and Corral is one worth targeting.
No need to argue we see things differently with respect to Corral. This draft is loaded with very good edge and OL prospects.
BTW, I agree with you on Thibs....

Like it or not DJ is our QB next year. OL and Edge should be the picks.

And if we have better players at other positions, we should not pass one up to draft a QB
As of right now we are picking 5th and 6th and I definitely don’t have Corral in my Top 6.
And they shouldn't have. They should've drafted Edge Josh Allen and Jeffrey Simmons.
They probably would've ended up with Herbert a year later.
